Lucas plays very strong D. I think you'd match him up with the best scoring guard on the other side even if he gives away some size some times.

I agree , the kid just knows how to play D plus he will be stringer by the start of the season, so I am not worried. I also think we will be doing a lot more then just waiting at half court and playing man to man D, and that should help everyone's D. If Coach U wants to get a shot off in the first 7 sec kind of says we will be pressing and trying to get turnovers to get shots up fast fast fast

Mizzou is loading up.....I really think Coach O better let BU in on some of them Kentucky and coach cal recruiting secrets

All these pictures of how great the Mizzou fanbase is, funny how quickly the story changed...

It's the same thing as the pictures of our empty student section versus the mob greeting Lovie at the Union. They've been given a ray of hope out of nowhere, after some super trying times for the program and the school.

I wish them the worst of luck, but lets not pretend we can't relate to the reason that fanbase was dwindling. We yet remain in that same boat, I remind you.

Really. I don't give 2 s***s about how Mizzou is loading up. We don't play in the same conference. They can have Tillman, we will be a better program in the long run.

I wish we can have this conversation 2 to 3 years down the road, then we can discuss who is loading up better. My money will be on BU and his staff. :illinois:

If you don't care now, why would you care 2-3 years down the road?

Mizzou's recruiting does affect Illinois, no doubt about that. What has much less value is how the actually do in their conference, only the indirect effect on recruiting would be relevant. Yet, I'd bet every one of their losses would be scrutinized and celebrated to death on this board.

I couldn't agree more.

I moved away in 1992; never understood how town managed to let Peoria take the tournament. It was absolutely a factor in recruiting, was cited so often. Seemed like someone in the mid 1990s had to have dropped the ball, so to speak, in losing it.

I am repeating myself, but you can likely only hire a daddy one time. Their situation is unique this year. Washington fires Romar. Washington has two players who decommit and go to Missouri largely because Mr. Porter is hired as an assistant and happens to be the dad of the top recruit.

How often does/will that happen? It will still come down to whether Martin can coach long term.

U guys seem to think the guy cant coach Cuonzo isnt a bad coach at all i have been saying this all along as long as u have the talent u can be a mediocre coach and still win a lot

And just because you get the feeling this is going to be a season-long argument: there is every reason to believe that the Porter's would have been packaged to Mizzou with a different coach had Cuonzo been hired by Illinois. Columbia was the draw as much if not more than Cuonzo.

An assumption seems to be left unsaid here that hiring Cuonzo would have brought the Porters to Champaign. No way of knowing to a metaphysical certainty, but there is very significant cause for doubting that conclusion.

Gun to my head, in the alternate universe where we hire Cuonzo, my guess would be that the Porters don't come, Walker stays on staff, Tilmon decommits anyway, and we're sitting here in the exact same position with a worse coach. I am not going to be buying the "road not taken" narrative next year.

Gun to my head, in the alternate universe where we hire Cuonzo, my guess would be that the Porters don't come, Walker stays on staff, Tilmon decommits anyway, and we're sitting here in the exact same position with a worse coach and a far worse staff. I am not going to be buying the "road not taken" narrative next year.

Fixed it for you

Cuonzo Martin had been an excellent recruiter even before Michael Porter Sr. came on board. So let's not pretend this is a one time thing out of nowhere. Cuonzo is a recruiter. Whether Cuonzo can coach or have success in the SEC long term is much less relevant, the important thing is that he will continue to fiercely recruit in our backyard.

It does not change the course of what we have to do however. We need to recruit with a vengeance and win our fair share of our battles. I like how our staff is shaping up, but at the end, it has to translate in major talent upgrade and wins on the court.

Hmmmm....

So, with that kind of talent they can do a lot of damage, for sure. They have visions of NT. Perhaps possible.

BUT, with that kind of coaching, not sure the kids, as individuals, will go too far. What is the coach's track record?

He's had the talent and he hasn't won a lot.

That's way too optimistic.

But they aren't going 8-24 again. And fans will show up at games and people will pay attention to them. And there's now something to talk about with the University of Missouri other than declining enrollments and poop swastikas. It's a big win for them.

I do not follow any recruiting. So, I decided to perform a search of teh past few years of Coach C Martin and here is what I found:

2015:
* Coach C Martin had the #2 recruiting class in the nation. With two top 10 players on his roster.
* That year he went 23-11, tarting at #14 in the AP polls, highest ranking (in AP) was 14 and finished the year at #23. Made it to the dance
* Next year (2016) is team went 21-13, with a highest AP ranking of 24. No dance
* He moved to another gig

I am sure many have made this association. Coach C Matin has raked in a top class and gone nowhere.

IF I HAD to extrapolate, he would be gone next year.

I look back at body of work with the talent that each coach has had. I try to remember BU's SFA teams and then I think about martin's teams with 5 star recruits at Cal. If the best of SFA and Cal teams were to play, I'm confident BU's teams comes out on top more. That should be all that matters. I think we better get used to a new type of recruiting, but I'm for it.

And IF this bet was offered to me, I would take it. He is not going anywhere next year. :)

He wanted to be back in the Midwest badly. He will be around for a few years anyway. Many seem to think he can't coach, but he may still be able to successfully recruit players away from other area schools. I find his style nearly unwatchable, but if he's a great salesman, he'll still win more recruiting wars than we'd like.

I agree, and that is the extent of the real impact on Illinois.

How does their recruiting hurt us, other then JT who are recruiting that they are recruiting. Smith that's more us vs MSU Pickett ? we kind of seemed to not be to worried about him,. I have been trying to think of all the players we have gotten out of the STL area since the early 80s and I really can only think of a couple Hill, Keen, who else ? I know there has been a couple more that I can not think off the top of my head, but come on we have never got the biggest and best out of down there that I can think of, so I for one really am not to worried about all this.

Francesco Badocchi

Now on the lookout for an available wing, new coach Brad Underwood was in Kansas on Saturday to check on three-star small forward Francesco Badocchi – who has also seen Virginia jump into the mix – of Roeland Park (Kan.) Bishop Miege.

https://basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/starting-five-four-star-jemarl-baker-a-hot-commodity

Looks like a very fluid, athletic and strong forward. A bit undersized for a PF but sure looks like he has some potential. Kansas is sniffing around too and where his sister goes to school
