Watch Tilmon test the waters and then decide he still likes Illinois best and recommit and this place will be real awkward.

nah...at this point, I think people are done with him. If he comes, great. If not, that's fine too. Wish him the best

Hard to see how that happens. It's like an ugly break-up in a relationship. There's a necessary finality to it.

Just went back and re-read a long Illinois Loyalty thread about Chin Coleman from 2012. Same debate as today. The more things change . . . . ;)

Any chance in the future with Verge? Just curious for those in the know what the story is with his basketball future. Any chance we could be in it?

Correct about it being a Red Barber phrase, although Barber himself said he originally heard it in a poker game in Mississippi in the 1930s.

But it's not the "cat seat" but rather the "catbird seat", a reference to the catbird, who like the mockingbird he's related to, goes to the highest branch of the highest tree to sing. Ergo, the catbird seat is the highest, most coveted position.

Sorry for being pedantic, but it's what I do best. :shakehands:

You may now return to your regularly scheduled basketball recruiting converstation.
:thumb:you're right. I think another one of his was 'standing in tall cotton.' I collect recordings of old baseball games and he's a lot of fun to listen to -- along with Hal Totten, Mel Allen and Vin Scully at 23 and 24. Recently got a copy of the only known game where Babe Ruth plays -- the '34 all-star game. Great stuff. Don't care a whit about baseball today but can listen to the 100 or so old time baseball games I have for hours.
And yes, you many now return to your regularly scheduled basketball recruiting conversation.

I'm certainly not in the know, but in the box below are his numbers and what Henricksen wrote about him when he selected his all state team. For a Chicagoland POY and first team all stater with those stats, he still only has offers from Providence and Illinois, so he's obviously not going to pass the clearinghouse. Whether he ends up juco and at a 4 year later -- or goes to the And 1 circuit or the Harlem Globetrotters, I doubt anybody knows except those close to him. I'd love to see him end up with us eventually and he seems to like Illinois due to the Dee Brown factor -- went to Brown's camps as a kid and middle schooler -- but who knows?
Alonzo Verge, 6-2, Sr., Thornton
The Chicago Sun-Times Player of the Year, and CSNChicago Player of the Year, Verge put up huge numbers while leading the Wildcats to a sectional title game appearance and a 23-6 record. Verge, who led his team to a conference title and was MVP of the Big Dipper in December, had a signature performance in the regional final win over Bloom scoring 42 points. The dynamic guard put up whopping numbers, including 26 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals a game.

I've seen/heard that Mark Smith may announce today and it won't be in our favor.

If that's the case, get 1-2 freshman, then fill the other 2-3 with 5th yr transfers. Then with Antigua leading the way get a monster class next year. Risky, but might be the play instead of scrambling to fill all the spots with freshman this year.

With 4 scholarships available the probability of using all four is very, very small.
Good chance we may only use one. if that.

Depends on who is out there. We could use 4-5 for the right guys and depending on any other roster changes. My guess is 3.

If we somehow get through today and tomorrow without a commitment from Mark Smith, we should be pretty happy.

Blake Harris committed to Mizzou, does that effect Smith somehow?

Absolutely, MSU fans thought it was down to Harris or Smith. Harris was scheduled for an OV to MSU next weekend. Izzo is not going to lose both Smith and Harris.

Excellent.

Outside of those who want to be at IL, we can now have a clean canvas to paint on.

These kids have had their say, wish them the best. We can now move on - to better things.
