I get the want to develop players, and I get the extent front court players need to develop in college (sans the truly gifted), but I feel like we have a good group currently of those guys. We obviously have no developed players. I think Underwood's thinking of grabbing developmental players is good overall, but eventually we need some band aids to fill gaps. This last roster spot seems ideal for a 5th year.

If Matic leaves, then I'm fully on board for another Calloo esque player, but I cant imagine he makes the same impact next year as even a mediocre transfer.

There doesn't seem to be a good pool of frontcourt 5th year players. I was completely on board with a 5th year big, but I haven't heard of any options worth truly considering at this point.

I was thinking about this as well. Maybe it's a byproduct of less coaching turnover in P5, leading to less coaches leaving Go5 jobs, leading to more Go5 players sticking with their original teams.

There are always late decisions due to NBA involvement with players. A whole lot of uncertainty at this time what the rosters of some programs will look like, which will impact decisions of fifth year guys. Also eligibility issues with class work still to be completed.

Guys we have interest in may not have made up their minds yet.

Nice assessment, might have some truth, but still of the belief that #1, Okoro,#2 Golden, and#3, player to be named later. BU has lines in the water, but sure he is ready till he gets bite from the big fish. Lands the big fish or see if likes the bait, wait till he has got him ready to reel in. If a no, (Which I feel it's yes) the no makes it open to later options.
Okoro is the main target, if he reclassifies, we will wait for his yes till it is no. Golden is still deciding, and we still waiting, but are looking for a big, hope we get the big fish.

after being forced to make my own version of a "blue blood vs. the beloved" decision recently, I can say that I have much more respect for the high level prospects that choose non-blue blood programs (ie. the two football recruits, Ayo recently with us). when its your future in play, it's much tougher (and not nearly as obvious) as it seems

That is a really good comparision and one that I might add would possibly be best case scenario as well? :chief:

i would think being like mike shaw would be the worst case from calloo's point of view.

Interestingly if we didn't know who MF was, but saw his stat sheet as a grad transfer big from a P5 team we'd probably be salivating over him.....

Several blue chip recruits though have been screwed by going to blue blood programs. Look at some McAA players that went to Kentucky and Duke just to sit on the bench or be under utilized.

Forgot the Duke player on this years team who is a one and done and might not get drafted. He was under utilized and not positioned well for his strengths. But the player has to go pro because Coach K has the 1-2-3 and 12 player coming in. So if he returns he will play second fiddle to these recruits.

Never want to hear about a player leaving your program, but let’s face it I think we all wanted to see someone else taking up a scholarship besides Matic

Would love to get an early Whitney commit and out of the way. Think we have a better chance with him, and actually think he has extreme upside and fits. Liddell is already there and will be hard to get him, that said he will be a one and done no matter where he goes imo!

Wait, what? C'mon, mon. Liddell's very, very good, but there's no way he's a 1AD.

2018 was all about Ayo. We got him.

We've added solid pieces to replace the half of the team that's left since March.

We'll need to do the same full-court-press in recruiting that we did for Ayo but with both Liddell and Whitney in 2019.

Success is on the horizon. Good luck to Matic - bring on whoever wants to be here out of Okoro/Golden/Calloo. We might have to do some scholarship shuffling in 2019 to get Liddell and Whitney but where there's a will there's a way.

Not really, sure depending on who/if we replace him with it is subject to change, but I’m not yet convinced we do better with his scholarship & having a sophomore project big sounds better than another freshman project big

Agreed. Though if his spot is taken by, say, Okoro, then I'd call that an upgrade and things will have worked out.

I think you have to go 2 deep to make that call, Golden & then Okoro or maybe you add the opportunity cost/value of taking one more + having a shot at a mid year transfer.

I just don’t want to get in the pattern of trading out for a new freshman project big every year & never getting them to year 3 or 4 when they might have a value.

Okoro would be a bigger get than Ayo. Huge get. Incredible get. If that happens, this team will compete as freshman. The above takes nothing away from Ayo but Okoro is a game changer immediately.

Not sure I would go that far. Seen EJ and Okoro play several times and Liddell has much more consistent skill set. Okoro is a big guy, but his handles lack, and outside shot needs work. Love to have him on team, but Ayo will be a very good player, maybe one and done, remains to be seen. And yes love them to both playing for us next year, that would be awesome.;):illinois:

TTC is just trying to stir another passionate debate. Ayo is a great recruit.....and Okoro would be great also. "Bigger get"....well it depends on what you consider our needs and what is "bigger".

We need a stopper down low in a "big" way. Okoro may be that stopper. Did he really get a 32 on ACT?
