The blue bloods were always going to be involved due to Tilmon's potential. I think we're in a lucky position with Tilmon being extremely raw which decreases the priority and pressure from those guys. Kansas already has a big and raw center coming in with Azubuike and he doesn't seem like a one and done player so Tilmon may have some competition for playing time. I would hope that big men are a bit hesitant to commit to Kansas if they're looking for immediate playing time. Still, the chances of landing him decrease the longer he takes with his decision.

I wouldn't call Tilmon raw. He's not a lock to be a 1 and done, but he's far from raw. He has post moves, good feet, and a good jumper.

His post moves aren't quite that good yet and he fades away way too much for a guy his size. I've only watched a handful of La Lu games this year but I didn't notice enough consistency for him to not be labeled as raw, just my opinion though.

Tilmon is miles ahead of where Meyers was in terms of basketball skills. He is substantially less athletic however. I think his ranking is appropriate based on similar bigs in prior years. He is a talented kid that a year in a college strength and conditioning program mixed with some advanced coaching will do absolute wonders. It isn't out of the question for him to be 1st team all B1G his soph year

Ohio State head coach Thad Matta will visit 2017 four-star Nojel Eastern on Wednesday as will Xavier head coach Chris Mack as well according to Andrew Slater of 247Sports.
Illinois visited Eastern, a 6-6 guard from Evanston (Ill.) Township High School, today. Seton Hall and Vanderbilt are expected to visit this week also.
Eastern is ranked No. 67 in the 247Sports Composite.
Michigan State has 100 percent of the predictions in his Crystal Ball.

I won't say dream class, because that would include Bowen and others, but if we are going with an "ideal class" as it stands right now, I'd want the following:

PG: DaMonte
SG: Pickett, Goodwin
SF: Lewis
PF:Culver
C: Tilmon

I really like Trent Frazier so if we couldn't get Goodwin or Lewis, he'd be my next pick.

If I'm John Groce, I would take a look at these two basketball players, and perhaps offer them a scholarship. They're not far from Champaign, just to the south actually.

Pocket City ‏@PocketCityAAU 15h15 hours ago Evansville will be in to watch 2017 6'9 Justin Carpenter of Mt. Carmel (IL) tomorrow.
First off, this is Mt. Carmel, Illinois. Not the Mount Carmel school in Chicago where Abrams and Austin came from. Carpenter is a solid player who has upped his game and I've seen him play. Versatile wing, but can play the post. Purdue has shown interest in him from what I've heard. He plays alongside with Jackson Marcotte who is also one of the best players in southern Illinois and the Tri-State (Groce needs to look at him too). Mt. Carmel is in the Big 8 Conference, the same conference that Washington is in which is where Cody, Tyler, and Luke Zeller went to during their high school careers.

Pocket City ‏@PocketCityAAU 11h11 hours ago Stanford will be in to watch 2017 6'10 Jack Nunge of Castle (IN) tomorrow.
I've heard nothing but good things about Nunge. This tweet caught my eye. Because Illinois needs bigs, why not look into Nunge and if he looks good, give him an offer. Castle is also the same high school where Blake Simmons came from. Blake is the son of University of Evansville Head Coach Marty Simmons and is currently on the team. Castle has a solid basketball tradition.

I hope we have the last visit with Tilmon and he commits shortly after. I feel good about our PG/SG/WF for that class. I think Pickett is still under the radar. I think we will get another combo guard (Frazier) or WF (Goodwin, Lewis). Would like at least two bigs in that class. Hoping one is Tilmon and another big (Negron, Culver, "the field).

Pro Skills (TX) G Jarrett Culver picks up offers from Arkansas Little-Rock, OK State, Texas Tech, Texas A&M & Illinois. After one session.

Just so people do not get confused, because I see a couple of posts mentioning "Culver" as a PF in projected lineups as soon as this post appeared.

Derek Culver is a stud PF from Ohio. The Culver mentioned in this post is Jarrett Culver, a SG from Texas.

Not sure why Tilmon would want to go to Kansas, TBH. Cheick Diallo averaged with 4.5 minutes over the last 11 games. Bragg had a little more action... he averaged 9.1 minutes. Diallo was the #5 recruit in the country... Bragg was 24th. Big Cliff had the same issue last year.

Tilmon will be behind Bragg and Azubuike to start with.

Come to Illinois... you'll be at 25 minutes a game and get to show your wares against the B10 conference.

Being on a team that will contend for a national championship, playing in a program that puts players into the NBA, committing to a coach that will be there when you get on campus, great facilities. Do you need more reasons for why these kids pick Kansas over Illinois? I'm amazed people bring this up every time we recruit a kid that is recruited by Kansas.

I can see why recruits pick Kansas, or any other blue blood, over Illinois, but in this case it might not be the best fit. Kansas has a true center that isn't a one and done coming in the 2016 class, and is the favorite to land DeAndre Ayton in 2017. Tilmon is their backup plan. I'd be more worried about UNC because their recruiting has been hurting.

Are these new offers a sign that Groce isn't as confident about landing Tilmon/Goodwin as he once was?

Yep. If Tilmon stays 2-3 years anywhere, he's gonna be a top 10 pick. But if that place is Kansas, he will have developed a lot. Guards don't develop too much under self, but 4/5's do.

The staff isn't going to put all their eggs in one basket. If there are other players out there that they think are worth going after, there is no reason not to go after them. Having options is a good thing.

Probably more a sign that this is a routine time to hand out offers as there's 2 evaluation/AAU weekends in April. Last April the staff handed out about a dozen new offers.

Sounds that way. If I'm Groce, Goodwin and Tilmon are still priorities which has been that way for awhile now. However, neither of them has committed to me.

Maybe they are just sticking to the recruiting process and evaluating their options before they decide to come here, but the point is, you don't want to be left empty handed. You don't want to strike out on Tilmon and Goodwin and then scramble to build a relationship with a way lesser known recruit. Plus, there are players that leap in rankings through AAU ball every year.

Perhaps a little push. Can't be left holding the bag. Push the Plan A guys a bit with other offers to kids they think are good enough to play, too.

Don't want another situation where you offer a top kid with no backup plan and end up with Jaylon Tate. :)

Did Bill Self "put" Cliff Alexander in the NBA? Or did he get there despite Self? By and large Kansas "puts" players in the NBA because they were great players when they got to Kansas. There's nothing magical about what Kansas does other than recruit better high school players than most places.

That's what I was getting at. I don't think Self is developing these players any differently than other programs. Easy to "develop" a player that is a Top 5 National Recruit and a Top 3 PF/C prospect... However, blue bloods don't seem to get criticized when a player doesn't work out... look at Kentucky and Skal this year.

I look at the strides that Mav has made from his freshman year to the end of his junior year, and call that major development. I don't think you have to go to a blue-blood to develop into an NBA player... the NBA will find you if you have the talent and athleticism.
