When recruits and their parents say "education" what they often mean or are heavily influenced by are the quality of the academic services offered by the athletic department in terms of tutoring and academic support and monitoring and all that. Not to mention the flexibility athletes have in terms of choosing a major and managing their sports schedule. I have always been told that Illinois is outstanding in that regard, especially for players who want it to be, but it's just important to note that the academic rigor of a school is pretty meaningless if a student-athlete isn't going to have meaningful access to it.

People hear "I want a good education" and think that a kid is just going to buy the most recent US News rankings and pick whichever school is highest. Not only does that not take into account the realities of being a student-athlete, it's a pretty bad way for anyone in any situation to pick a school. It's not what the "best" education is in a ranked, one-size-fits-all order. It's what the right education is for that student.

That being said, if it is compatible with Kiir's needs, any degree from Illinois offers something that a VCU or a Long Beach State cannot. That much is true.

Great post!

It's front and center for the Class of 2017. The Hoops Report breaks down the top 10 seniors-to-be in Illinois ... http://bit.ly/1rcElq5

1. Jordan Goodwin, 6-3, 2G/WF, Belleville Althoff
Up to this point there isn’t another player in the class who has been more productive over his first three seasons. And that production, along with a fearless winning mentality, counts for an awful lot. He’s won and produced big. Oozing toughness and competitiveness, Goodwin has strength, basketball savvy, leadership and a will that translates to the next level, even if questions pop up concerning his jumper and ideal position in college. The perimeter shot is improving and he’s a player who transcends position. Goodwin has that “it” factor, which the Hoops Report highlighted HERE last month.

The fact that Groce is casting the net even wider, at least Tilmon and Goodwin, I think, will head elsewhere.

Jaren Jackson reminds me of former hoosier Calbert Cheney. Regarding Groce casting a wide net, I don't blame him. Can't allow players drag out recruitments only to go elsewhere.

Even if Goodwin and Tilmon both looked Groce right in the ocular cavities, and said "Coach, we're coming to Illinois!", he'd STILL better cast a wide net and look for options.

Looking for options doesn't really say anything about how likely anyone is to choose Illinois.

I doubt the ratio of offers to open schollies has changed. If anything, I'm sure people want him to give even more offers to bigs, even if they feel good about landing Tilmon.

Here are my top performers from the Spiece Run N Slam http://www.scout.com/college/basketball/recruiting/story/1666285-spiece-top-performers

Includes a new name that we haven' t talked about...Nobal Days along with other targets!

Probably the best passer at the entire event wasn’t a senior, and wasn’t a point guard, it was Nobal Days. Days is a 2019 power forward out of Racine, and out of the high post he might be one of the most difficult players in the country to deal with.

Days is 6-foot-9 with long arms, and he does have a solid touch out to 15 feet, but it is his passing ability that sets him apart. He makes not only good decisions with the basketball, but the right one. If a teammate is open Days will find him, and that leads to numerous easy buckets for his team.

It is still extremely early for Days in his recruitment, but schools such as Marquette, Wisconsin, Arizona, Purdue, Iowa, and Illinois are already involved his recruitment.

It's been said here before, but at this point if Groce has his eye on any recruit, no matter how early in his recruitment, no matter his ranking, no matter how under the radar he may be, I'm assuming he's legit. I get he's whiffed. But If Groce is gone in the next couple years, one thing I will absolutely be taking into consideration is if he is hounding any future recruit we have our eye on. If Groce is interested, that recruit is for real.

Can someone explain to me how a non-commitable offer is presented? Does the coach say, "Jimmy, we really like what you bring to the table and so I'm offering you a scholarship, however, you can't commit until I see if better players ahead of you on my wish list come here first. Stay in touch, Jimmy!"....Isn't that an awkward conversation?

This comes up periodically, so I'll give my guess about how this might work. The coach tells a recruit that they are offering a scholarship. At the same time its the staff's policy that a recruit not accept a scholarship until they've had a chance to visit the campus. At this point the staff can control when a visit takes place.

That's just my guess.

Agreed plus the coach's level of communication plays a large part. You may offer but if you eventually just stop talking to the kid or the level of communication is lacking, that is going to tell a recuit a lot.

Could they also use academic acceptance as a qualifier? So we need to have your transcripts and ACT scores approved. Then slow roll that process???
