According to your argument you can't go after anyone, whether that is HS or transfer, so not sure why you would just single out CM. Furthermore, Groce was ready to oversign not only by one, but two players (Snider, Cliff) before even knowing of any openings. Hard to imagine that Groce is slowing down in recruiting, especially this spring when there are enhanced chances of scholarships opening up with so many players currently questionable. As far as timing, 5th and 6th NCAA decisions are usually decided in April so a decision on Thorne is forthcoming.
Fair point, though there's a big difference between oversigning in Nov versus in April. Usually by now, you know who's staying and who's not, but I think with the slow pace of the legal system, it's very possible that Groce will not have any clarity on the Tate and Nunn situations until the summer, if not later. And I don't think Groce wants to add another guard if both of those guys are back. So sure, he could recruit CM or any other 2016 guard, but I would assume his offer has to be contingent on one of those guys getting kicked off the team. And even if one of those guys leaves, that also takes a 2017 recruit off the board, though I doubt Groce can afford to look that far ahead.

On the other hand, as you pointed out, he should know about Thorne soon, so I don't think Groce is slowing down in exploring 5th yr big options in the event Thorne doesn't get his 6th year, since that seems to be clearly, at least in my opinion, the greatest need for next year's team.

What was said was not that, but that "chances that we land another Thorne in the 5th year market are slim to none." Damion Lee was not a big, he is actually a guard, actually a SG/SF type both at Louisville and Drexel. And yes, I am probably one of the few who actually watched some of his games at CAA.
Yep, stand corrected on Lee. I think the 6'6" threw me off. Still, if I'm a coach on the hot seat, I'd take even a Sam McL. over a high school guard for this Illinois team as I think that kind of player gives me the best chance to win next year. And while there may not be as many Thorne's, I think there are numerous Sam's out there. For the record, I'm not saying CM would not be a plus player for the program, but I just think a combination of a 5th yr big with an added bonus of an extra player in 2017 (Lewis perhaps?) makes more sense given Groce's current predicament.

He was a McDonald's All American.

I know he was but I was talking about his time here. He hardly is ever mentioned on those teams of the early oughts in comparison to Frankie (understandable), Cook, Sergio, Cory, even Arch to some degree. Marcus was a really good college player.

Henricksen recently wrote a great article about Goodwin. There was a lot of information from his dad in the article, including him saying, "he knows where I want him to go". Hopefully he's talking about the Orange and Blue!!

Given that it's the state school and the first to offer I'd have to think that's a good bet. Given the list, I'd be surprised if he already had his heart set on some random school. That being said I do think it's good he's letting Jordan go through the process and make his own decision.

That article made the recruitment sound a lot like the path AJ went on. Remember the road trip tour Rob told us all about to all the different B1G schools that were offering him? Then when it was all over he told us that yea they gave them all a chance and it was nice going through the process but it was always UI at the end of the day. From the sounds of it that may be what is going on here as well. Hopefully it is.

2016 SWISH 'N DISH RECAP - RECRUITING NOTES Evan Flood — Contributing Editor - NY2LASPORTS.COM

2017 point guard Nojel Eastern of Meanstreets holds offers from USC, Purdue, Michigan State, Northwestern, Missouri, Seton Hall, UNLV, DePaul, Marquette, Xavier, and Iowa State. He listed Wisconsin, UCLA, and Ohio State as programs currently expressing interest.

No mention of Illinois at all?

2017 power forward Christian Negron of Mac Irvin Fire said Illinois, Iowa, and Butler were standing out in his recruitment. He has other offers from DePaul, Northwestern, and Virginia Tech.

In the context of DMW (and TJL) and our plethora of wings, would you expect us to stand out? Eastern wants a clear path to significant early playing time. He's headed elsewhere.

Eastern is a 2/3. Illinois has Williams (1/2) and Pickett (2/3) already committed with Goodwin (2/3) as a main target. Add in JCL, Jordan, DJ Williams and you can see why Eastern may want to go elsewhere.

The other two guys are heavy Duke favorites on 247 at the moment. One is a true center, while the other is a PF so they could both play at Duke which might drive the intensity of Tilmon's recruitment up a notch from UNC.

The NCAA investigation hanging over UNC could scare some kids away. Even if UNC only gets half as much punishment as they deserve, it will still hurt them. If the infractions that the NCAA brings are significant enough, it should force Roy out.

If UNC get's half of what they deserve, I'll be shocked. It's the NCAA we're talking about. It's not what you do, but who did it.

Recruiting is like a game of solitaire. You can get close and everything looks real promising, but unless every detail falls into place, it doesn't work out. Hopefully we win the Tilmon and Goodwin hands of Solitaire.

Or Roy will conveniently retire or find something else to do just before it all goes down. But pretty much the same thing.

It feels like we've been playing minesweeper as of late. Recruiting isn't fluid, its like Windows 95 games I played as a kid.

Given that we usually seem to be juggling the recruitment of 2 or more players in a position of need and the margin of error continues to get smaller as the recruiting season moves along, I'd say it is more like JezzBall.

Before, I thought you may have mentioned 4/21, but Wednesday is 4/20. Hmmm.

4/21 had to do with the court dates, but based on the Lear activity out of Willard, I would think transfer or 5th year is in order or maybe a late 2016.:)

Since when? Most, if not all, articles and recruiting sites list him as a PG. And didn't he play PG when he went to the USA basketball camp?
