here's hoping all our recruits stick with us. love this class. and if we land Smith...even better!

What's funny is that he committed to play baseball at Mizzou so he obviously likes or at least feels comfortable on their campus but has never once considered them for basketball, even before they fired their coach. That's how much of a dumpster fire their program is. I realize I am not adding anything new here but still somewhat amusing none the less.

Henricksen picks Edwardsville in Tuesday's Super. I'm really anxious to watch this game. And even though I think our odds on Smith went down with Groce's fire, still hoping whoever the new coach is can convince him to commit here.

Mark Smith
If the super-sectional and a trip to Peoria happens to serve as the introduction of the Edwardsville star to the rest of the state, well, better late than never. Success has come rapidly.
The 6-4 do-everything star guard has gone from a player taking visits to Northern Illinois, SIUE and Wright State in the fall to one ranked among the top 100 players in country and coveted by Illinois, Northwestern, Texas, Butler, Kansas State, Ohio State, Indiana and others. Smith’s rapid ascent includes a 45-point sectional championship game performance last Friday night.
Smith (22.2 ppg) is dangerous in a number of ways, including his passing (8.5 apg) and rebounding (8.3 rpg). While he has the ability to carry his team with his shooting and scoring, Smith can also close out games with his strength, savvy and getting to the foul line (82 percent from the line on 196 free-throw attempts). That’s all you can hope for from a lead guard in March.

Yes, have seen him a bunch online and then for first time Friday live and he is darn close to a 'must get' at this stage as it gets. He could even be the Illini leading scorer next season. He is that good.

He checks about all the boxes (height, girth, athletic ability, handle, shot, shot, driving ability, passing) for a bigger guard who could play positions 1-3 at the next level and play on or off the ball equally well. He fits well with the Illini returning/recruited talent.

Smith has everything needed to be the next great at Illinois. After the introductory press conference, Smith should be the next coach's first call

It seems that Smith is giving us every opportunity to recruit him here, too. The plan:
1. Get a good coach
2. Keep Walker for continuity
3. Lockup Smith
4. Unleash new look Illini.

Still say he reminds me of the Jack Gibbs guy, (Davidson) as well as a more prolific scoring Sergio maybe...

I would like to see these young men led by a new Illini coach in the spirit of a John Wooden. A great basketball mind, but a better leader of men.

"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are." - John Wooden
Does Sam Gilbert come too?

He might be a doctor, but he surely isn't versed in espionage. Obviously also that stupid @isgrocefiredyet account too.

Something in my gut tells me it's a possibility that we lose Frazier but gain Mark Smith. Love Frazier, but getting either on campus would be huge given the circumstances.

I feel like Frazier is a guy we can't miss on. He is the type of guard we've needed for the last 10 years.

People are saying the same thing about Mark Smith. People said the same thing about Quentin Snider, Jalen Brunson, Jawun Evans, etc...there are plenty of good PG's out there. Ayo Dosunmo next year, plus we already have Tejon Lucas. Just need to find a coach who can get these guys.

Mark Smith is an absolute stud and he will be a centerpiece in Illinois moving forward if he comes here. I would take him over Snider and Brunson and it isn't close. He's more an Evans type electric player at the next level. Another comparison would be what Walton Jr. is doing right now. When this kid packs on another 5 lbs of muscle and strength.. With what he can already do.

He's an NBA prospect and going to win Mr. Basketball in a class that includes Tilmon and Goodwin.

Since Groce firing, some buzz out of South FL this am indicating Trent Frazier may be opting out of his NLI.... Gtech may be landing spot

Becoming obvious that Josh Whitman needs to move fast and keep this recruiting class together. A good coach can do that.

People who think that firing Groce is automatically going to put us in a better place four years from now might be in for a very rude awakening.

This job is not a destination job. People have inflated the position based on our own personal love for our team. In doing so, many have this list of high profile coaches in their minds that most likely will not come to fruition. So, there will be a letdown.

Those same people hold a belief that this class is going to be held together by this presumed high profile head coach. If Whitman doesn't pull off a coup.....This top 10 class is going to be ranked around 50, when they lose Frazier and Tilmon.

We're losing a lot of production from this senior class and are going to lack depth badly if this class falls apart.

This might all work out great. I hope it does. I hope we don't regret not giving him the extra year to get his Freshman class on the floor.

If we strike out on the hire that many of you think is going to be amazing.....And the recruiting class gets purged....It will set the program back AT LEAST four years.

My gut tells me that unless we keep Walker, we lose Tilmon and Frazier and if Martin goes to Missouri, we're going to have a problem there.

The longer this goes, the worse it will get. I really hope Whitman has "his guy" in place by next Monday or Tuesday, when the 20th comes and goes and the tournament field gets cut to 16.

Setting us back from... what exactly?

If we had gotten any one of those guys Groce would still be here. Top pgs are not that plentiful
