I would rather we don't take any more 5th year guys, get a young guy even if they RS they still have a better chance to really help then any 5th year guys

So you would rather have a freshman sitting out this year than have Thorne?

Still have a solid class of guys started up so far for next years class. Don't forget that. Getting Frazier would be huge. UofI needs to show him love on his visit. Wings are not needs. Have Pickett and williams in that class already. Looking forward to seeing what groce can do with the guys this year in a pretty open B1G. Go Illini.

So that's done. What does ideal (but realistic) look like now:

Frazier, Kiir, and "any top 100 who wants to commit" otherwise get a 5th year to open a 2018?

JMO,

I'm still betting on the field on Kiir. I have no information either way, but our hopes seem to be mostly speculation that L'ville taking a big eliminates them, but ignoring we have a big in 2017 as well...but we do have several irons in the fire for a big...so I think we will get a big, if it is Kiir or not, TBD

Frazier has been positive enough that we have to be the leader, but we are still playing against the field, although a fairly weak field. But quite a few people thought Goodwin was a lock, so don't take Frazier for granted either.

Assuming we get Frazier & a big; then I think you go for the best player out there for 2017 & we still have some very good targets out there in Smith, Scruggs, Wilkes, several bigs, Eastern, ...

A 5th year would be fine, but I'm not counting on it. In the past we had gaping holes to sell starting spots or at least a spot in the rotation. Lewis had only Tate to compete with at pg, Thorne knew he would start, Ekey walked into a team with no returning 4, Mclauren knew there was a spot in the rotation backing up Egwu & competing with Griffey at the 4. We will only have 7 returning scholarships so we might find a fit, but plug any of the above into 2017 & can we make the same sales pitch? Doesn't look as easy to me.

Greensboro- how do you rank our chances with the multiple bigs we're talking to? One reason I like the 5th year big (a la McLaurin) is that Kiir (or most other non-top-50 freshmen) doesn't look ready to play 15 a game at center. A 5th year big prevents Finke from having to play out of position - as more than 25 mpg for Tilmon seems like a stretch.

No for me, I'm glad we have Thorne. But I do think the situation/need for 5th year is changing & I'm hoping we don't have the huge holes of the past where we need a 5th yr.

It is changing the topic/question, but nothing wrong with 5th yr transfers...there is something wrong when you absolutely need them every year. In 2017, hopefully TJL looks ready to be pg & freshman are competent to fill in, we should be good at wing, we can probably find a place in the rotation for a decent big, but Tilmon/Black/Finke & a stretch 4 mean we shouldn't be desperate.

well had we took a FR last year instead of Thorne we would now have a RSFresh Big rather then a 5th year sr tran who we don't know will be any healthier then last year

I am just saying I would much rather take a chance on a kid who might help you for 1 2 3 4 years rather then take a chance on a trans who might help for 1

Not directly at you alone but I wish people would stop calling Damonte a wing. He is a combo and probably actually a combo that can play the one. He has the necessary vision just needs to hone his skills some.

This. DMW has the potential to become an excellent PG. Dare I say, better than Goodwin? Certainly, his path to early playing time is at PG. Hope he puts in the work.

Agreed. Damonte's chances of being an NBA PG are astronomically higher than Goodwin's. Don't think NBA GMs don't consider pedigree mixed with potential.

The next five years will tell the tale for both kids. They both have a long way to go. I'll be following one closely.

Always bet on the field, even if we're the perceived leader.

No Liddell? Very surprised by that.

It's so early, I don't know how they can really evaluate, there will be a ton of movement between now and their senior years obviously. It's mostly for clicks, but I love lists. Of the offers we have out for that class Liddell and Cowan are the only 2 not in the top 100.

Feel bad for the staff, they put a lot into this recruitment. I'm sure Tilmon is disappointed as well. Ford being at SLU is not great for us, as he will be recruiting downstate and he is definitely a guy who is not afraid to get in the mud a bit. I don't think there is anything particularly dirty about Goodwin's recruitment.

Tilmon might be disappointed but i think this proves that their relationship wasnt at close as some made it out to be.

I just want to welcome Luckylefty to the club of insiders who have missed on their prediction for a recruit! It's about freaking time! :D I mean...nobody could be THAT much of an insider.

Anyway, even though I joke, I am still looking forward to Lefty's posts as he is batting like .800 or something like that right now.

This place will always be exciting....that's for sure!!!!

Yeah a 5th year can be a nice stop gap. But you can't pass on a talented guy like Kiir just because he might not be ready year 1. And you can't assume that you can get a 5th year big later on.
