Haven't seen this possibility posted about the Finkes. If they want to play together it could happen some place besides ui. Mike could be 5th year transfer candidate with immediate eligibility.

In theory, yes. But one should not be thinking such thoughts.

On Wilkes, potentially 3 visits then UCLA, Indiana, and Illinois have in- home visits. With a decision prior to visiting the 4th and 5th schools.

I think what Illinois can offer is a solid roster from multiple classes than would be very competitive (top 15 or better) if Wilkes attended. What can we sell? For starters I will introduce him the strength coach and show the improvements by Hill, Kipper, and JCL in one summer. Wilkes is an NBA talent but needs to get stronger. Obviously the improved facilities and show off the university.

Introduce him to Lovie as well.

Is our strength and conditioning coach that impressive compared to other schools around the country or have we just had a bunch of terrible ones that make him look exceptional?

Fletch is great. His results with our guys are exceptional.

Kind of the point of my question though. Are his results exceptional for all programs or are we just shocked at what even a decent strength coach is capable of?

The next time a basketball player accepts a scholarship because of a strength coach will be the first.

Yup. I don't think that's on the top 50 things a recruit looks at when picking a school. And no recruits look at 50 different things.

if Wilkes is like most recruits, he'll be looking primarily at who he's likely to play with and if he feels a connection/comfort level with the coaching staff. After those two items, there are dozens of other more minor things he might consider. The strength coach isn't likely one of them.

Well, Louie Simmons who has the strongest powerlifting gym in the world (and works with tons of pro athletes) says a lot of guys actually get weaker in college because many coaches only concentrate on speed without also working on the strength base. A pyramid is only as high as it's base as they say.

To answer the original question though, athletes would like to make lots of money in the pros right? Adding say 4-5 inches onto a D1 basketball player's vertical in a year or so is potentially worth a whole lot of money and should grab people's (recruit's) attention. If you're jumping higher, you are also faster, tire more slowly, etc. The verticle is a fairly accurate predictor to how athletic a person is, and everyone wants to be more athletic right? Adding 4-5 inches in a year BTW is freaking awesome.

Problem is there is a difference between last scheduled/planned & last actual. I'm with FatGreg, I think the chances of him making it to UConn are slim, before that Xavier is nearly a month after IU visit...there is a good chance he doesn't make that one. In this case, I love going first, he least we get to make a pitch, maybe if rumors are true & Tilmon/Williams/Pickett show up something good happens. So let's hope for your first & last visit, that scenario usually plays real well.

If you're first, at least you're pretty well guaranteed to get a visit. He could cancel, but he's unlikely to commit before he shows up. With each successive school, he's less likely to visit the next one. So going first gives you the best odds, that way... Has he visited all of these schools on unofficials? If he has then the "I wonder what that other school is like" effect is likely less significant. He's been to IU, he's been to XU (I think). Maybe he hears Groce's pitch, recalls how lame those other schools are, and tweets, "F it, I'm going to Illinois!"

I think a kid with an NBA caliber body and talent would be quite interested in knowing how each program planned to help prepare him physically for the next level. Tons of money on the line and that could be a big selling point not just to the recruit, but to his family. Could be very material to the decision making process.

It's not going to be a singular focus of anyone but most of these decisions are made on a balance of a lot of different factors. I wouldn't discount this factor to a player of this caliber.

One can only hope that's EXACTLY how it goes down.

This is a great question. It seems like every fan base thinks they have the best strength and conditioning coach, especially when talking about recruits.

"Just wait until (insert name - usually singular) gets a hold of him."

Combes you are dating yourself, athletes absolutely want to know the strength coach and development plan. Strength training has become a major part of football and basketball is catching up. I'm sure Groce is going to talk about getting him from point a to point b and that is going to be showing him the coaches, facilities, and results.
