Does anyone recall a recruiting scenario similar to Smiths where with two weeks to go a program swoops in and scores a commitment? I'm sure it's happened, but wondering if there's any we would recognize?

Sherron Collins? I recall at the time the word was Self showed up, made a pitch, and without even visiting KU's campus, Collins committed.

Right? Poor guy desperately needed the break. Hope this helps him feel better.

Bonafide outstanding news from the Williams camp and encouraging news from the Smith camp! The guy has O&B in his veins already if he's talking about the Flyin' Illini. I'm feeling good about this going into the upcoming dead period.

EDIT: maybe put this in the OP, Dan? Just an idea. We'll be starting to refer back to this soon. http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/Feb2016DIMBBRecruitingCalendar_20170209.pdf Delete addendum if not.

“I’m building a good relationship with Coach Underwood right now,” said Smith, who added he still talks a lot with Walker. “I like him and how his playing style is and what he thinks I can bring to the table. I feel like he’ll help me achieve my dreams. He says they have a great recruiting class and I can help get Illinois basketball back to how it was earlier with the Flying Illini.

Perfect pitch. Simple. Compelling. True.

If Underwood can exceed expectations in his first two years, and help Tilmon look like a lottery pick then the sky is the limit.

It happened that way with Julian Wright. I'm pretty sure Collins visited. Both of these guys were Top 25 players though, so they weren't last minute recruitments.

Of the 4, I'm most worried about Pickett. I also still am of the opinion that we only end up with one of DaMonte or Smith.

Xavier Simpson comes to mind.

The Harrison's were ranked highly, but neither panned out, and only one was a PG (and even that might be a stretch). Andrew ended up being a bust. They also didn't recruit a PG the year before. Not saying it was easy (it's Kentucky), but it's a different landscape compared to their current recruiting class.

Both Andrew and Aaron were just one year before Ulis. Not only very highly ranked but Andrew averaged 25.5mpg/9.3ppg and 31.7mpg/10.9ppg and Aaron averaged 25.7mpg/11ppg and 32.6mpg/13.7ppg on a Kentucky team that was absolutely loaded those two years. At Kentucky!!! Both played in the NBA, Andrew is still in the NBA averaging 20+ mpg. You may want to research the definition of "bust" as well as not panning out at a loaded UK team nevertheless. :)

What Ulis accomplished was tremendous, and there were many people on this same board that said the same thing about Ulis as you are saying about Smith. Many more back then.

Well obviously now that the other 3 have confirmed their commitments, that shouldn't be too surprising.

I am interpreting the second part of this as you don't think we will get Smith. This is definitely possible, but hopefully not the case!

That's about where I am, but I wouldn't use the term "worried" to describe where I'm at with Smith. Smith's comments actually reassure me quite a bit. He is going to give all of these coaches suddenly interested in him his ear and listen to them. I think, at the end of the day, he's going to suit up for us. Underwood is selling the idea of building a new dynasty, and this year's recruits are the first dominoes falling into place for that.

The 3 year thing is pure speculation, but in the age of accusations being fact with some people...not saying you.

You may want to research Cuonzo Martin at Tennessee and his move to Cal, and at Cal and his move to Mizzou. Both cases very well documented and nothing to do with recruiting violations. As far as accusations being fact, you are the one making/implying these accusations on why he left those places. There is not much out there.

I kind of understand the concern about Pickett. He was our first recruit out if this class and some have compared him to Malcolm Hill. IMO I think he comes to our beloved. I am hearing from my sources, the voices in my optimistic head, Smith joins this class and we are not only trending upward but skyrocketing.

I want to win. I want to play for a winning program, and I want to go to the tournament. That’s really what’s important for me.”

Great news about Da'Monte. Kid had a chance to be special, assuming his knee receivers fully.

Think Underwood is the type of coach to push Da'Monte and maximize his abilities. Kinda eery how much Da'Monte's game resembles Frank.

If I recall, reports were worded such that he would announce on or before that date, so it's possible it could happen any time in the next two weeks.

From what I remember, the quote was along the lines of "I would like to have a decision by April 12." So that leaves the possibility that it is later. Unless that is some deadline that I'm not aware of.

Soft date of April 12th. I'm not putting much faith in the actual date. I think it was meant to be a ballpark number. I think we almost certainly hear after that unless Underwood locks him down with alacrity.
