The real question is if we win tonight, do the Walker conversations progress to a point that they can tell JT what is going on, or is he in the wind until the end of the month?

I was wondering the same thing. I feel like you almost have to move the conversation forward regardless of NIT status sooner rather than later or else risk some degree of torpedoing next season's recruiting class.

Honestly, I agree with the other poster's sentiment. If Tilmon is that tied to Assistant coach to this extent vs loyalty to the school he chose, then let him go. I was moved at the time about him saying that he wanted to play for his state school. Frazier, being from FL, has shown more dedication to his commitment to the University of ILLINOIS....Than the kids of their home state of Illinois.

The school hasn't changed, the education hasn't changed, the fact that it's our home state hasn't changed, the roster hasn't changed and in Tilmon's case, early playing time definitely hasn't changed.

If he is that tied to an assistant and is willing to kick the school to the curb that easily, see ya. You have to build a program based on the buy in of 100% of your staff, parents and players.

Holding Underwood hostage over Walker is ridiculous. It's either they're both committed to being here or they aren't. If not, later.....

So much of recruiting is about relationships to the coaches. If you only want players that choose a school over a coach, you won't get a lot of players. Trent is an exception.

Wouldn't we restrict Tilmon from transferring to Missouri because of the bragging rights game? Just like we restrict other transfers from transferring into other B1G teams?

I have no problem with delaying him a few weeks until he has an opportunity to meat the new coach but blocking a kid in this situation (coach committed to was fired) is petty and sad. Especially to a school not in our conference.

How many ESL kids do you think would be willing to sign in the future after screwing one of their own?

absolutely not

You're right. If he goes to Mizzou, then good for them, they can enjoy their one year of hype and falling short in March, while we lay the foundations for a top level program.

Tilmon is in NO WAY a one and done player...not by a long shot, for the same reasons, he will not be a savior if he comes here...he has talent, he is not an elite talent in that way.

Patiece my friends, let the NIT play out. After, keep Walker with a big raise. Have BU show mad love in the mean time and stall the recruit's decision until after the assistant Coaches are announced. Assuring them that we want them to have all the info necessary to make an educated decision, which is the truth. With all that JW has shown us in the last year, do you really believe he is going to mess this up?

Good Post-

Whitman has said all along he will make recommendations I suspect the Coach will embrace his new bosses recommendation.

I'm not a top recruit and I obviously am biased, but this makes no sense to me. Both coaches are new, so I'd imagine the recruits would look at what was done in their last stops. Martin floundered at Cal with 5-stars while Underwood had the most efficient offense at OK ST this year. And Illinois should get the home state advantage with a class of Tilmon, Williams, Pickett and Smith all staying home andthe storyline of bringing Illinois hoops back to the top 25. Obviously there's more to it than that still, but it's hard for me to see why thee guys would all end up at Mizzou.

Martin was recruiting Smith & Tilmon, Underwood wasn't. I think we get them both.

I believe that Walker ends up staying. It seems he wants to stay. That combined with having the better head coach and better system will result in keeping Tilmon and getting Smith.

All of these rumors about Tilmon and Smith are dependent on 1 thing...Jamal Walker. He stays they stay...simple as that. We won't know until after the NIT.

This is exactly right. I am not letting these CB's and rumors on Twitter bother me in the slightest. They mean literally nothing until Underwood's staff is announced. This noise is just 1,000% gossip.

This is exactly what I'm wondering... kinda makes me uncomfortable with regards to recruiting. I'd like all this locked down yesterday, but I have to wait.

Don't get me wrong! I'm super happy we won tonight! I'd like to see this team win the NIT. If you thought you deserved an NCAA berth then you might as well beat everyone in the NIT and back it up.

Considering SLU and Mizzou want him it seems like he both more long term value at Illinois and a better coach to learn from at Illinois. (Ford and Martin don't need help recruiting)

But people make decisions for many different reasons. We will have to wait and see.

I've completely stopped looking at CBs. I don't want to give them my clicks. I just used 247 for their useful composite rankings.

All this news is coming from the Missouri camp. Trying to take some of the shine off the Illini. Get use to it. Example = LaPhonso Ellis.

Well, this all might have been locked down yesterday. We don't know what is happening behind the scenes. Maybe Walker already knows he's staying and maybe Tilmon knows too. But nothing is going to be announced until after the NIT.

We play in 2 days and I'm sure walker knows that Illinois wants to hire him. There's no point in doing anything than supporting him as head coach until after Wednesday's game

The thing about Monte is he didn't really get recruited heavily by other teams because he was such a Illinois lean the whole time. He didnt really develop relationships with other coaches or schools.

The fact that he's coming off an ACL is sad, but probably doesn't improve his stock for most teams either. Hope he sticks.

Tilmon may go to Mizzou but I would be nearly shocked if Mark Smith went there. He is pretty savvy on the recruiting process and I think would see the mess that program has been and the fact that Martin is simply not that good of a coach. I am not saying Smith is coming to UI at all but I would be willing to bet he would take our situation and coaching over Mizzou's.
