I'm definitely not an Insider but I'm hearing rumors of a second 7-footer on the way to UIUC. Not even sure we were recruiting a second 7-footer so this may be hogwash. Anybody know anything?

Valdir Manuel would be my guess. We are in his top 4 with Wake, Syracuse, and Seton Hall. Figured we’d pass on him with Kane coming on board tho..

Can a student-athlete on a sports scholarship be "reassigned" to some other type of a scholarship? If so, what other types?

I'd be okay with that. It's been a while since we have had more than one legit post defender at a time.

Ebo can certainly be a legit post defender. It's almost frustrating at times that we think freshmen aren't going to get bigger, stronger, gain weight, and skill. Ebo hasn't played the game long and certainly can and will improve.as will all our players. Ebo is a solid athlete for a young man his size. This was just a huge jump in competeion especially given that he is relatively new to basketball compared to others he is facing.

Egwu took time and improved I think Ebo can too.

BOOM! Feed my ego.
Ebo, Samba and Manuel would be a nice group of young tall guys to protect the rim for the next few years. At this point I'd prefer to have an athletic PF in Trice over another thin center, but if Black leaves I'd be thrilled to be able to get both.

Maybe calling him "sneaky athletic" would fit. The more I see of him, the more I am convinced the staff found a real hidden gem.

Biggest thing to me, in the short term, is that Griffin seems to be a winner. We need guys that know how to win and have that inherent drive to win. Griffin's most immediate impact just might be helping to turn the culture of this team.

Where are you hearing this from? I asked about us also pursuing Assan Dioge. Samba Kane's former teammate.

This is, of course, assuming every one of them pans out. Not every project big will work out that way. If you want to have two legit post defenders and you are relying on project bigs, might I suggest that recruiting and signing more than two total would be a good idea?

Of course the more quality players we have at every position the better I feel Ebo and other freshmen preformed well when we honestly considered everything they were thrust into and they will continue to improve.. I am also thrilled to have Samba and will try and set reasonable expections for him too his freshman year.

I wouldn't use the term "reassigned", but yes.

See the bylaws, rule 15. Athletic Scholarships are year to year, and do not need to be renewed. Think of a walkon that gets one for his junior year because the team didn't use them all, he would likely not expect to retain it for his senior year.

If he qualified for certain other types of scholarships, he could still utilize them. Again, see bylaw 15.

However, anytime this happens, you can bet the NCAA goes over it with a fine tooth comb and making sure they are not athletic scholarships in disguise.

Also, few athletes in basketball/football would want to do this. Those athletic scholarships are full rides that include room and board, something that very few other scholarships come close to matching.

I'm guessing you didn't catch the h.s. game today vs. Christ the King. He didn't look awkward at all. Skilled in all phases, passing, rebounding, drives, midrange, deep. Not necessarily great, but solid in all, which is what you need from a 2,3. Like I thought DJ Richardson would be, but wasn't.

Like his brother also. Save a spot.

Great, but Austin, if you really want to be an Illini possibly sooner, you could alter your announcement schedule to a date publically before April 11th to ensure a spot on the team (unless you're locked in already with the coaching staff).

Matic goes, Trice is most likely the replacement. So the date is fine. As it sets now, Trice may be in if *gasp* Jones goes elsewhere.

Not that I think we have a real shot at Ramey (I personally don't) HOWEVER, just a nugget. I just heard Oregon is supposedly going to get "heavily involved" in his recruitment. I don't see it, but I am just a dude

That is my guess & just reserving the public announcement for April 11th to honor his Grandfather.
