Lol not quite he wants to commit soon and he would now be a spring project type of commit.

This feels like the kind of situation where he would not benefit from committing soon. He is kind of in that limbo position where he's probably good enough that the mid-major programs would love to have him at any time of year, but if he waits until spring, he may get some more serious sniffs from larger programs like ours.

SIU is where a lot of people want him to go.

Not true, I believe Payton is an ultimate fall back spring guy, would be shocked if he announced or ILLINI accepted him before then if even then. Payton has SIU type school written all over him imo.

So did Jordan Caroline.*

*90% kidding here. Not a fan of using exceptions as rules.

Agreed. Every recruit we sign is crucial at this point. I think BU is a great coach, but you can’t win with just “anyone”. Talent ultimately reigns supreme. I feel Payton is definitely a fall back for the staff or he would have probably already accepted and faxed in his LOI this week.

Is it best to take a player or Payton's caliber, at whatever position, or leave the scholarship unfilled?

For me, the calculus is simple: standard Plan B. If we don't land a SF better than Payton (SF/PF hybrid), take him. Classic slow play. OTOH, slow plays frequently drive kids elsewhere. So be it. Pretty sure we'd prefer him to wait 'til Spring.

FWLIW, I don't think Payton will be an Illini.

I agree with this prediction. SIU is on the upswing and he should be a good player in the MVC. I don’t see him waiting around for IL to find a better option and then being recruited over the following year. If IL says we want you before Spring, he is ours. If we say he has to wait, he picks one of the other three on list.

Tell me if you've seen this movie before.
- Illini slow play Payton
- Payton blows up
- Payton gets better offers in Spring
- Illini miss out on better options and go all in on Payton
- Payton chooses another school
- Illini go digging for last minute 300+ ranked "diamonds"
- Illini fans cry themselves to sleep

I have not. Popular narrative, but not based in reality other than maybe Tyler Ulis? That still isn't the same, though, because Ulis was a far better-regarded recruit than Payton currently is, and it sort of defied reasoning that we didn't offer him before he totally blew up given our point guard struggles at the time.

I completely agree! I personally have met the player and feel that he is not close to listed height. If he was truly that size and played with a high motor, he would be sought after by many more programs. Great kid and I wish him the best but he is not a BIG type of player.

We are not slow playing Payton. We now have three bigs who are more or less projects plus January who is more highly regarded. No way we get another project this fall, IMO. We'll be hoping that we grab a better one in the spring. Maybe if we strike out on those options we'd take Payton, but even then I think it's doubtful. Better to roll it and have more flexibility in the fall.

Is January ever going to actually play? Can he seriously qualify with his high school history?
