Evan Daniels with a 9th CB for Curbelo to the beloved
All this good looking smoke around the situation makes me wonder, if it is as certain as it seems, why hasn't he vebaled? I know it's years of being an Illini fan making me paranoid, but if he's just waiting till signing day to sign without make a public decision before, my cup will need to be upgraded to platinum tier.

Not even close...... I’ve been reading this message board since inception ... nice try though.

There is no way a coach is sticking around as an assistant, assuming they have head coach aspirations, just so they can coach a kid. If he was that close to the family, the kid would go wherever the coach went.
I'm with you ..but if Antigua gets a head coaching job I doubt it will be with a high major school. At least not a very prominent one.Noone would follow him.

At his prior HC gig, Antigua had the worst W-L percentage of any non-interim coach in the history of the school. He might get more money elsewhere as an assistant, but I don't see him leaving for an HC job anytime soon.

Just realized there are two other prominent PGs from Chicago ranked above Miller: Nimari Burnett & DJ Steward. I find it odd we didn't make it farther in the running for these guys. Any insights?

We were in it for DJ for a while until Duke offered. Were in it for Nimari too but Miller always seemed the most likely. Then Steward, then Nimari. All along, the consensus on this board was generally that we wouldn't get more than one of them and we would be thrilled with any of them.

To quote Ken Burns "Country Music", Don’t Get Above Your Raisin’. Meaning once you cross over into the top tier of 5-star one-and-done types, as things stand now, you can save your energy. Because 99.9% of the time they are going to one of the bluest of blue-bloods. I have often wondered, is there any incentive for the Kentucky or Duke players to even go to class once the Tournament begins? Sign with an agent. Sign a shoe contract. And sayonara to the "college experience". These schools essentially play the same role as AAA baseball - though I think the benefits are a lot nicer at the basketball factories.

He verbals to the staff not to the fans....;)

Who else do I know with a historically bad win-loss percentage?

Listen, I've got no reason to doubt that you, our other random eye witness(es), and the growing number of 247 crystal ball owners are wrong. There is far more evidence than usual (usual being none) that he verbaled to our staff. But I also don't doubt that other recruits have "silently verbaled" to our coaching staffs before, only to send a letter elsewhere. My point is that a LARGE majority of recruits don't just verbal to the staff they are committing to, they verbal publicly. Especially if they are making their decision before they can actually sign. That doesn't seem to be happening in this case. Recruiting is strange enough when people follow the generally establish protocols for the whole process; we've been kicked where it hurts before. Now, we've got a recruit who we all seem very sure is coming to Illinois, when he hasn't yet (and doesn't show any sign that he will before signing day) come out and say "I'm going to Illinois". If he has really, fully made up his mind, why isn't he doing the thing almost everyone does when they've really, fully made up their mind? Again, I believe it. I think he's coming. But those are the times you need the cup the most.

Hasn't it only been 5 days since he visited? I know we're excitable people about our Illini, but let's have some perspective.

lol. Man! you are so inside you know what Josh Whitman is thinking?!?! You are inside his brain?!!!!111
All of the speculation about OA's contract makes me laugh. I don't pretend for a second to know what converstations have been had with OA, JW and BU but I'm sure there have been conversations...it's equally plausible to me that the interested parties wanted to wait until during/after this season now that the pieces for a tournament caliber team are in place (at such time as the quality of play on the court more closely resembles the amount of effort put forth by the coaches). Think of it this way... JW: I can sell a nice contract extension much better if we are dancing in March... OA: Let's discuss it in early 2020.

Well thought out and reasonable post...very logical approach to a crazy situation. (Recruiting a 17/18 year old)

Honestly, even with a public verbal, a kid could change his mind LITERALLY on signing day. (Quentin Snyder)

So let’s all rejoice that things are going well right now and hope it continues while understanding those folks that are forever wary and will never count their chickens until they are hatched.

No kidding. Let the kids have their moment even if it conflicts with fans idea of a timeline should be.
Seriously. This is probably the most important decision this young man has made in his young life, I am fine with him wanting to make his announcement when and where he wants, in front of his friends and family and school. He doesn’t owe us anything. If the coaches are good enough with it, then so am I. After all, isn’t that what signing day is for?

Not entirely related to recruiting, but did anyone see that Counzo Martin demoted Michael Porter Sr to a support staffer role and promoted the guy previously in that role up to an assistant coach? Fair to say he probably didn’t get a great return on investment, other than the frenzy of hype it set off in the preseason of Year 1.

I do want him to have his moment? I'm not sure what you're talking about. Most of the "moments" for these top 100 kids are some sort of live streamed event at their school where they announce where they're going, or pick a hat, or whatever. Go for it. My point is only that when kids decide where they are going before the they can actually sign, they usually do something public (aka have their moment). Curbelo doesn't seem to be doing that. There are a lot of good signs pointing our way, but, if he has really made up his mind, the thing you would most expect to happen now (a public announcement) hasn't happened yet and isn't scheduled to happen yet. And again, that's fine for him. If he wants more time, he should take it. But if you're following a recruitment and a kid hasn't made a public verbal, it's either a bit of an unusual recruitment, or the kid hasn't really made up his mind. This isn't a criticism of the kid, it's just me trying to understand the high degree of certainty that is buzzing around this thread and remind everyone to keep their cups on tight because this doesn't look normal to me.

So at least Porter Sr is probably the highest paid support staffer in the NCAA??? What is he making...like $1M...to now be a support staffer. :ROFLMAO:

Burnett is from Chicago originally but he’s lived out on the west coast for awhile, close family connections with Juwan Howard. Chin obviously knows the family too but that was always a long shot.

Steward was prioritized by Duke similar to Whitney with UK last year, had a chance for a bit if things worked out. Still feel Texas and Louisville would have been the choice otherwise but I love his game.

Miller has always been the most likely. There was some buzz earlier with other schools like both in Arizona but I feel good about him coming here in the end.

Honestly these guys are all literally ranked within like 10 spots of each other. I would also not consider any of them PGs, maybe combos at best all are scoring guards imo.
