That sounds like something a Kentucky fan would say to rationalize their position, or as an excuse if he goes somewhere else. A top-30 player may not be the headline to their class, but it's still borderline burger boy. Their current class has 4 guys ranked 30 or lower, and it's #1 in the nation by 247sports.
I am not a Coach Cal fan. In fact I despise him. However I dont think he uses ranking services to evaluate his own recruits. He and other coaches make a lot of cash and one reason is they can evaluate thier own talent. It may usually match up but not always.
I think BU can evaluate talent and sees more of Curbelo for example than others may. I dont think player rankings really mean much to coaches vs thier own assessment.
Someone ranked at 40 by a service may and could be in Cals top 10. I think he usually gets who he wants and is a snake in my eyes for how he does so everywhere he has been.

I have heard that rumor of Hopkins trying to commit. I believe that a few of Calipari's targets committed elsewhere. Its getting later in the game and closer to signing day. These are unprecedented times and players cant even get official visits to campus for God's sake. Its like the girl you keep asking to go out with says no because she might be waiting for her dream guy. Do you accept her offer after the dream guy declines her? Sorry for the example but I have to use real life here. Some would say yes and go anyways. Others might say you know what, you played me. I am going to go where I am wanted.
You take her offer like we did with DWill.

Everyone is different. Different factors drive every person. Its a little foggy but the Patrick Beverly recruitment. I remember him wanting an Illinois offer, wishing for an offer. Coaches came to games and showed interest. I don't remember if they offered and made him a priority but I do remember him saying I am going to make them wish they had made me a priority. He ended up at Arkansas and Illinois could have infact used him. That's just one instance. There are tons of examples that are the opposite and the offer is taken.

Well, QC said if he makes it to the weekend, it’s us. If he commits today, (sounds like a possibility) it’s someone else.

I think it goes without saying that all coaches do their own evaluations. I don't see that as evidence of him being unable to commit, but neither of us know the details, so not much point to arguing about it. It's possible they're not all that high on him despite his high ranking. Just a grim reminder of how uneven the recruiting landscape is...

Regardless of how this recruitment shakes out, I think we're in a good place. Recruiting ebbs and flows. Win big some years, lose out some years. Like it or not, we're not going to be a top 10 team every year. I feel like thats not breaking news, though.

How on earth did we not offer Patrick Beverly?

Like I said, Im not sure if he got an offer or not. I do know that he wanted to go to Illinois. No question about it. He was a menace. Marshall during that time player a run & gun style of offense, run and jump, hectic full court defense. I don't know if it was grades or what but he ended up at Arkansas.

Sure, it's fine to miss on some guys when there are other options but I'm a little concerned the options are starting to dissipate. If we lose Hopkins hopefully the staff can find a late riser, hidden gem or impact transfer to fill that need. Down recruiting year is ok if it doesn't hurt the performance on the court, but if we do lose Trent, DMW, Ayo and Kofi I'm skeptical that a class of Goode and some 3 stars with potential will keep us competitive. Or maybe it's all ok and the fact I'm following these recruitments so closely is bad for my mental health 🤷‍♂️

Losing A LOT of in state athletes, why? What else must be proven in basketball that we are on the rise, nationally? Football, the recruits said they wanted upgraded facilities...have you seen the new complex and we still lose every top 50 in state recruit.

Is it time to get a little dirty?
Quite a few of these guys in football, have never even seen the new facilities due to the pandemic. Seeing them on film is entirely different from the experience of seeing them in person.

First, Trent and DMFW can return (due to COVID). But let's assume they don't and that Ayo and Kofi leave. Our 2021-22 Roster still looks like (PB=Primary Backup):

1. Andre Curbelo (PB=Hutcherson/Miller)
2. Adam Miller (PB=Goode)
3. Austin Hutcherson (PB=Verdonk)
4. Jacob Grandison (PB=Hawkins)
5. Giorgi Bezhanishvili (PB=Hamlin)
Bench: Lieb

If we hit on Mac Etienne this roster looks like Top 25 material to me. If Trent or Da'Monte come back for another year it adds a lot more depth and essentially secures us as a Top 25 team in my eyes.
