Transfer Portal. The grass might look greener from the other side of the bench. But sometimes, you move over there and find out it was nothing but a bunch of healthy looking weeds. Or not. Everyone is feeling their way through this but it sure does look like an awful lot of fun in the off seasons for the foreseeable future for everyone involved.

And it never hurts one to do some Spring pruning and tidying up to your own crop when necessary. Cutting back allows for healthy growth they say.

This process seems like a reasonable solution instead of tying an anchor around a player who’s not happy and wants out of your program.

What multiple times do you keep referring to?
The fact that he didn’t sign in the fall, waiting until the last minute and making it seem like Michigan was in the mix in the spring, and now this whole thing. That “multiple times” is what I’m referring to.

Really? How is it uncontrollable?

I ask, how is this a controlled environment, then? Explain to me how, on average, 3 student athletes per basketball team is transferring this year? Does that seem controlled to you?

Did the NCAA just think, "ehhh, no big deal, maybe a few will transfer to be closer to home, or take advantage of an extra year of eligibility." What about the kids from last year that had seasons cut short (Basketball, wrestling, etc or cancelled baseball. softball, T & F, etc.) Were they given a free year, or opportunity to transfer without penalty? Nope. That is why the sit out year is imperative to some sort of normalcy.

The other option, which I am in favor of, and it was on the table a few years ago.
Student athletes when signing NLI had to declare one of two options.
1. I, student athlete, agrees to commit 4 years of eligibility to University X
2. I, student athlete, will be attending University X but intend to leave after ___ number of years.

It's pure chaos! Why have an NLI if this is how it will be? Yes, NLI are only a written agreement for 1 year of institutional attendance. However, every coach/university recruits and offers student athletes under the expectation they will be a long term part for the team.

Nothing about this seems uncontrollable. The student athletes were given more agency over their playing careers in the form of a no-sit-out transfer and at the same time given a one-time extra year of eligibility. This won't always be the case. For one, every one of those players transferring this year won't have another free year left and only 25% or so of NCAA players turn over from one year to the next, so the pool of eligible players will be smaller.

There are also so many transferring this year that undoubtedly some won't work out for the better, and those will become cautionary tales about the dangers of just transferring willy nilly.

I think this will be self-limiting and, after this first year, it will be much less dramatic than this year, though still more so than in the past.

Regarding the comment about last year's graduates versus this year, I leave you with this:

You may be correct, but I don't think they have made it clear if players have to sit out a year if they choose to transfer again.

Regardless, the NCAA does nothing to curtail backdoor deals, or illegal recruiting, so you know stuff is going on out there. If the NCAA had stepped up on recruiting scandals over the year, they could have curtailed that too, but they did not. Therefore, I don't have a whole lot of hope of this being a 1 year thing.

Will always be a way around something the NCAA does.

Of what seems to be our top targets, Over/Under 2 out of the following guys:
Franklin
TyTy
Mitchell
Burnett
Podz
Miller

I set it at 2 because I think that's what we'll get: Podz and 1 transfer.

I'm far from an insider, but reading the tea leaves from some of our posters, I think we get Podz, Franklin, and Mitchell. But a LOT can change in recruiting, and there's a ton of time before some of these transfers will decide. I wonder if some are waiting to see who enters the NBA Draft and who still might enter the portal. I think there are some big names just waiting to enter the portal but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

After last night - how are all of these guys defensively?

Besides AM, which we are familiar with with (and he was really good)

Mitchell is something that I'll believe when I see it. I think he's looking around but I don't see us being the destination. I think we'll get Podz and then either Miller returns or Franklin. I'm guessing we'll add another big guy that's not on my list as well.

With Mitchell, I thought the rumor was that he was enamored with playing alongside Kofi. So the thinking goes that if Kofi stays, there's a decent chance at landing Mitchell, who wants to play the 4 and not get stuck at center.

That was kind of hinted at with the Payne transfer too, that with Payne, you have a 5 to now go get a 4 that will actually play the 4 and not be forced into being the 5.

Podz Franklin and Miller is like the best case scenario. Here’s hoping.

Kofi coming back is a bigger deal than any recruit actually. Payne is a decent safety net for Kofi going pro though.

How is the staff feeling about this? Quiet usually means get the cup out.

Not with this staff. I feel like this staff is very quiet regardless of outcome. The previous staff leaked like a sieve and you still couldn't really make predictions based on the leaks.

Next year hinges on Kofi coming back. Payne's a good pickup, but if he were a productive high-major starter, we'd know it by now.

I would go with the over, IF you added "the field". Of that particular list, I agree with the 2 you said.

94 kids rated 4⭐⭐⭐⭐ or higher in the portal. Pretty crazy to think when a typical year has less than 200 TOTAL! NCAA has built an environment that is uncontrollable and everyone needs to be patient. It's free agency basically and whoever has the best pitch with the best options will get the top players. After that, everything else will fall into place. Regardless of what WE think, we have been mostly irrelevant for nearly 20 years. We may not get the cream of the crop. The players we are going after were between the ages of 4-7 years old when we lost in the title game, which is what some of us are hanging our hats on and this year's 2nd round loss as a 1 Seed. Other than that, we are a slight blip on the map of NCAA Basketball. Yes, we have a lot of selling points. Facilities are upgraded/upgrading, we had 2 AA this year, fun PG returning, etc. But, we need to have perspective too.

To put it into perspective the portal is basically taking all of Major League baseball, wiping out 40-man rosters and then start picking teams.

30 MLB teams and 40 man roster = 1200 players
Current Transfer portal players = Slightly over 1200
This isn't remotely true. The transfer portal started in 2018 and there have been over 1,000 entering the MBB portal every year since.

If Payne can reduce his fouling I think he can do what we need him to do, which is protect the paint, set screens, roll and catch lobs.

I get what you mean. But I’ve seen a lot of big guys look totally different as a Jr/SR when compared to true or FR/SO season.
Also I think Antigua’s coaching could really help him.
