I like this kid game! What do you all think about this?
I like Guerrier's game. His 3pt% isn't the best, but he seems like a decent slasher, good around the rim, and he rebounds well. I do wonder about how players who transfer from Syracuse adjust defensively to new teams that predominantly play man to man. Seems like a good plan B to Mitchell?

Not Illinois related, but I was taken aback by Tom Crean's extra-salty statement after his 4* freshman PG, K.D. Johnson, put his name into the transfer portal today:

"Given the standards and expectations of Georgia Basketball, we whole-heartedly agree with K.D.'s desire to seek a new program," Crean said in a statement Monday evening. "We certainly wish him the best and really hope he finds success in all areas moving forward."

Is this not how every single professional sports team works? I don't see any reason to believe there will be any more friction than there already is. Some players start over other players. Some players get drafted over other players. That's life. Transfer rules will still apply, so maybe they get one freebie but otherwise start having to sit a year. That won't be great for their bottom line when they have zero visibility and a company doesn't want to pay them to ride the pine.

I don't think it's the end of college basketball. Ultimately, if you want to really get cynical about this, players are already getting paid. It's just more hidden, so it allows fans to live in a fantasy world where these super talented kids are playing a game in exchange for an education. But that's not true in the upper echelons of the sport and hasn't been for some time. All this does is make it less illicit, and when things are less illicit, they tend to be more equitable.
There are a couple of a major differences.

1) If you have a contract with team A, you can not unilaterally choose to transfer to team B.
2) Before it seemed like only the 5* players got a visit from the bagman. Now I expect that every 4* will expect a non-trivial payment. I also expect the bidding wars on the 5* players to go much higher than before.

My buddies here in Atlanta are seething hot with Crean. Think he’s a complete joke. They’ve now lost 7 of their 8 leading scorers from last season, mostly due to transfers. They legit will struggle to put a team out on the court at this rate.

Crean being salty about someone transferring? Is that Karmic irony or ironic Karma?

I think Crean is admitting he can't meet the player's standards and expectations ;)

Regarding 1:
True, but you don't think any NIL-related contracts would have out clauses in the event that a player loses a starting spot or transfers? Lexington Ford Lincoln probably doesn't want to keep paying a player who rides the pine or transfers to Louisville. So it's different, but the effect will be similar. A national contract with Nike or something might be a little more resilient to a transfer, but Nike still doesn't want to pay a player to sit a year. Of anything, I'd think this incentivizes top players to stay put.

Regarding 2:
I'm not sure both halves of this can be true at the same time. Big companies are already paying plenty under the table, and local companies are resource limited. Either way, I'm not 100% convinced this would be a bad thing. The schools and NCAA make billions. I don't see why players cashing in is such a problem.

It sure is a good thing that there are car dealerships in most (all?) major college towns. Also, rules about directly recruiting players from other schools will still apply.

The bigger issue that you've missed here is that schools with a national following and/or located near a major metropolitan area will likely have the potential for much more NIL dollars to fly around than programs with neither. If anything, I think this helps us.

By the way, I think letting athletes profit off of NIL is a good thing and the above issues are solvable.
I guess once and for all we will find who the great and powerful “Chicago “ supports. Just hope it’s us. Nothing stopping anyone from promoting a player from another school. If it comes down to a duke player from Chicago or an Illini player whose not from Chicago. Who does the business go after also rules are in place now to stop poaching players. Doesn’t work now. What makes you think it will in the future
