AJ Storr decommit. A little surprising but not shocked...
Not really a surprise when you look at the seeming overload at SG/SF building up. Objectively, we probably need players at the 1, 4, and 5 more than another 2/3. Of course, we will probably be hit with a plague of injuries...

Maybe a dumb question, but what has happened to the state of Illinois basketball? It seems like we are offering guys from all over the country but very few in Illinois. It seems like the depth of quality players in state has really fallen off in the last few years.

I don't feel like there is anything wrong with casting a wide net. Look at the team from the past year. There are players from all over the country and all over the world. They just need to put together a good team with great players no matter where they come from. The talent level is down in the state and COVID did not help because players left Illinois to play in states that allowed their kids to play. But as a high school basketball fan, I didn't see any teams that excited me last year. It seems like more great players are leaving the state than are migrating in.

My school got a transfer from a Bloomington player. The UIL (Texas ihsa) never cleared him. He’s mid major good, would have been our best player. So I can speak from experience that players of that ilk, looking to get recruited, definitely left to be seen. Unfortunately for him Texas screwed him.

Yeah I don't care where the players come from, and it definitely is moving to a more spread out and national recruiting landscape. It just seemed like 10 years ago or so in Illinois, I was used to seeing a couple true blue chippers and then a relatively deep class of high major players in the high 3 star to 4 star range (top 150ish). I haven't really looked into the classes in state but just based on who we're recruiting, it seems like there's not a whole lot to choose from instate.

The key is OFFER/OFFER/OFFER! Young kids play games....get kids who WANT to be here!

Lol I love the "only get kids who want to be here" takes. If this was the case, we never would have landed Deron Williams, who wanted to go to Georgia Tech until they took Jarrett Jack and we were the fallback option. Worked out well for both parties I'd say!

It's literally one of the coaches' jobs to convince these kids that they want to come here. The "only kids who want to be here" line is so nonsensical. What on Earth do they think the coaches are trying to do by recruiting them!?!?

That's why we recruits 2's and 3's who can handle the ball, pass, and create their own shots for the most part. Like Podz for instance ran the point!

‘We only want guys who want to be here.”

This is a noble sentiment, but not energizing enough. Why does ‘anybody’ want ‘anything’? Because of what they think they’ll get out of it. They want their best deal... for THEM, not some institution or other reason. Good old self-interest. That’s what drives our World.

So – that being the case – it’s The Beloved’s job to make their home place as attractive to the outside World as possible and make surgical clarity to each prospect of why it’s the best place in the Universe for them to succeed. And as the player succeeds the best, so will the Illini program as well as developing a reputation for being a place young guys want to come.

The College Ball World will be a place of shifting sands and changing horizons for a long time. The Old Normal is gone forever and there’s a new storm of raging seas to navigate. The Major College Ball programs that have the best Navigators and Captains will be the ones to reap the benefits whether the nameplate on their door is just another ancient boring old legacy Blueblood or one of the rising star programs such as The Orange.

THAT’s how you get guys who ‘want to be here’.

One of these teams is not like the others.
