I've really only watched a few highlight clips, but sometimes when guys do lack that jumping athleticism, they get really good at getting the ball out of their hand and getting it up so that the defender can't block it as easily. Sometimes they perfect that so that it works to their advantage, as most defenders are ready for the opponent to have it in their hand up until they release it near the rim.
That Michigan pg with the scoop shot

While Kenwood recently lost state’s top prospect JJ Taylor to a prep school, coach Mike Irvin confirms that 6-9 big man Jaden Smith, one of the better prospects in the Class of 2024, has transferred from Lincoln Park to Kenwood.
My gosh, the state is loaded with PF/Cs in the class of 2024. Brown, Johnson, Jaden Smith, Lathan Somerville (Peoria?), Ethan Lathan (from Rockford but I thinnk at prep school in Missouri), Jaheem Webber (Normal?)

Anyone seen any of these kids play? Who's good (I know Brown and Johnson are)? Who do we have a legit chance with?

That is all well and good but Kofi by himself should be making over 100k.
We have >500 student athletes. I'd expect they'd have earned more than that collectively.

He's been described as a "strictly below the rim player" so don't expect him to be dunking over people. From what I've watched, he makes up for lack of run-jump athleticism with his moxie. He scores like crazy at all three levels and he does it against top competition. And he also gets lots of steals.

I doubt very much he'll add 12" to his vertical leap. It would be nice, but he doesn't need to. Plenty of unathletic, but crafty, skilled players have thrived at the college level.
? Scott Skiles.........some guys can just ball!!

I get your point, but that's all speculated value. We have no idea how much monetary value that actually brings. I would speculate the same as you, but without any data to back it, it's meaningless. Also a questions of if schools have figured out how to market it. Lots of question marks
As I've mentioned before and I'm sure others. NIL income is not about value to the company which is pretty minimal. It's about alumni stepping up to overpay players. It appears to me that we're off to a slow start.

Yeah when I see this number, and I see that TyTy at Kentucky got a Porsche that probably costs about the same as the number for all our athletes combined, it does kinda worry me a little.

I get your point, but TyTy's Cayenne is almost guaranteed to be a lease. Even with insurance, the cost is less than $2k/mo. Not poo pooing it, but a far cry actually owning it (~$130k).

Until we know what the players are getting in the aggregate (which we'll probably never know), an apples to apples comparison will be impossible. Yeah, Whitman and company will know. And I'm confident that he's trying to weaponize it for us.

Good point. Hoping we see something flashy and substantial soon, so recruits can take notice.

Doubt we'll (the general public) will see much flash. That said, recruits (and their camps) are going to have a darn good idea of what to expect.

The last segment of Fighting Illini 2021 Basketball Preview (hosted by Ryan Baker) was on a typical Kofi day. He drove a nice SUV and his apartment isn't exactly a dorm room. Point is, I think we're taking care of our players.

I buy this, it just makes the "2x national average" advertisement seen kind of silly. Who are they trying to impress with that

I watched the video and I agree, athleticism was underwhelming.

But the way he is scoring against top-flight competition -- and getting steals -- says he is extremely talented with great court awareness, but perhaps not the athleticism to be a top-20 recruit or one-and-done.

In other words, he is absolutely perfect for a great 3-year career at Illinois.
He may not be a high flyer above the rim player. However does he really need to be? Two of the best point guards to come out of college like CP3 and Steve Nash or some of Michigan States pgs weren't either. I am not saying he is like those two but he can certainly succeed with quickness, hand eye coordination and agility and other athletic traits to beat the opposition.

The tweet is more a reflection of the athletic department, not just for basketball recruiting. You have to look at it across all sports, not just relating to basketball. Most student athletes would love 2x what the average student athlete in their sport is getting.

Probably the high school athletes who may be potentially attending their school for a variety of sports.

Seeing as we haven't heard anything, looks like Ty Rodgers is going to be a spring signing

Havent heard a peep from this recruitment. He is down to his final few schools, so I'm still holding out hope that it happens this week

*that is still an option but the staff still thinks he will commit soon.

Re: Epps, I’ve seen comps to Edwards which I think is fair, though Epps doesn’t seem to be quite the chucker Edwards is. What about our very own Andres Feliz as a comp? Not the biggest, most athletic guy nor the flashiest but you look up at the end of the game and he’s inevitably one of the leading scorers and his team usually wins. Glad we have him!

I really, really wanted Dawson Garcia and am pretty sure staff did too. But with Hawkins on a serious rise, that loss almost seems like a win (granted, Kofi coming back helps a wee bit too :ROFLMAO:).

Point is that recruiting is frequently looked at as a standalone, whereas it should be looked at as intertwined with player development.

Hopefully, Carolina will be exposed as a fraud (again), with a major over promise.

Final thought (not recruiting related): Hawkins current trajectory is flippin' awesome. He's gonna be a pro, the only question is which league.

I share your excitement, but I don't know if I'm ready to label him a pro. We've seen 2 games against lesser competition. I would just encourage caution with these high expectations to avoid a letdown.

If Epps can be Feliz with a better outside shot, we'll have one heck of a player on our hands.

Need to see Hawkins do it against solid competition before we conclude it was a "win" not getting Mitchell, Obanor, or Garcia in the portal.
