Kevin Turner exploded as a senior in the late 90's
In my opinion, Turner and Carter are both guys that showed improvement year-over-year culminating in great senior years. I think you can make an argument we've seen something like that with BBV. The issue with Payne is that so far we haven't really seen that (so far, I'd feel a lot better about him if he finished the season strong which could happen). In fact, on offense he appears to have regressed. His FG% is worse than it was as a freshman at Florida. Statistically he's probably having the worst year of his college career. Not a thing you like to see in a junior. Not saying he won't turn it around, just saying I don't expect BU will wait to see if he does before he puts together a contingency.

Sure, but how often does a player make that big a jump after year 3 in college basketball? And more importantly, if you're BU do you bank on that happening, or explore alternatives?
That's true but misleading. Only one half of one of those years was with this coaching staff. If he were on year 3 in our program I'd agree with you, but he isn't. It's still year 1 with this staff so it's premature to say he's unlikely to improve.

He's also not going to have the benefit of a full four years with this staff. Like I said, I'll feel a lot better about him if he improves over the course of this season. But if he's the same player in March that he is now, I'm skeptical another offseason is all he needs to be a capable Big Ten starter.

There is a decent chance Kofi comes back.
I would say:
Belo
Epps
Transfer (Goode or Rodgers could be here, but a transfer will likely come in)
Hawkins
Kofi (If he leaves: transfer 5 plus Dain/Omar
Bench would be Rodgers, Melendez, Harris, BBV, Omar.
Also Grandison and Hutch could very well be back next year.....
What would be the threshold for him staying or going?

He's had great improvement passing out and he's hit a couple of jumpers. Needing to switch on defense and stay in front of guys will be the next challenge.

I think one thing we should keep in mind is the daily competition between Omar and Dain. Omar doesn't have a motor issue and once Kofi officially is gone, those two can see a clear path to minutes, but they will be shared. Hope this will work in favor of both, as Dain gets to go head to head with a quick twitch athlete and Omar gets to see what a polished offensive Big looks like.

The threshold always was and still is a guaranteed NBA contract. If that's in doubt, he'll have to weigh risk/reward between staying and going. No clue how that will shake out.

Dain is polished?

I don't see that as the threshold at this point. I think it's any pro contract. He'll have a year as a highly touted NPOY candidate to gauge what he can gather in NIL money. If that falls short of a likely overseas contract, I'd have to think he'd go.

There's little indication that he (or many other college athletes) are scoring big on the NIL money. But perhaps there's a lot happening behind the scenes that we're not aware of. Someone can literally pay him 100K to show up at a Christmas party after all and we wouldn't know. But the idea that people would be forking over money for big endorsement deals is pretty much disproven. There's still time for that to change a bit, but early indications are not real encouraging.

+Podz. I'm hoping he becomes our Brad Davison....without the nut punching. 😎

Your describing it as implausible implies otherwise. Something can be plausible without being probable.
We were talking about two specific players not "no player in the history of Underwood's program has ever improved" which is what you said.

Payne has been in Underwood's program for half a year. Calling it implausible that he shows improvement over time is just silly. BBV has been here longer, so that's certainly a less plausible scenario for him.

No one said they couldn't or wouldn't improve. The claim the other poster made is that he sees them as bench players still next year. If you think they will vastly improve to become Big Ten quality starters next year that's cool. We don't have to agree but I don't see that as plausible. How you twist that into, no one ever improves in this program or that we said they won't improve at all is beyond me. If that's what either of us said I would agree that's silly. But you're not addressing what we said, you're addressing what you hallucinated we said.

I didn't say he would improve. I said it is ridiculous for some of these posters to act like we are in trouble if Payne starts next year because it completely discounts the possibility that he could improve. It is one plausible outcome. Another plausible is that he is still barely serviceable. Either way, there is no way anyone should be making blanket assumptions like that right now. It's not fair to the kid.

Again, maybe it comes down to your misuse of the word plausible. Plausible doesn't mean it's likely. Plausible means it is one possible outcome that realistically could happen. I never said that it's likely; only that we should not discount him this early into his time in this new (to him) system.

Are you kidding me? Have you seen his style of play? Who needs this get-around-your-man-and take-it-to-the-hoop malarkey. He needs to learn the weave outside the 3 point line or his !!! is riding the pine. Dude probably doesn’t even wait until the last couple seconds of the shot clock to shoot. 😒

Muskie, after watching years of us passing around the perimeter to throw up a 3 pointer as the clock runs down I find it refreshing to have to player who will attack the rim.
