Pace was a lefty if I remember right..................
Pace played for us. Thinking same 1964 class as Rich Jones, Ron Dunlap, and Steve Spanich(sp?). Denny was a good guy. Not a great college player, but a glue guy and defensive ace with unique floor skills. I am pretty sure he was right handed.

Seems like Collinsville had another big time recruit
few years later that went to UK.

Yeah. Kids in St Joe wear Orange and Blue diapers. If the Illini offer, I can't imagine he'd say no.
We had three from St. Joe-Ogden back in the day. Deon Flessner and Les Busboom were rotational role players on decent teams in the 1960s. Rick Schmidt was pretty good, the best player on bad teams early 70's.

They did up through 2019 and then it got canceled last year, I believe. It's still going strong, though: https://www.collinsvilleholidayclassic.org/
I’m sure this old news but…Collinsville left the Western Big 6? I guess when they left WB6 picked up Geneseo?
When did that happen? (I saw that you’re an alum. )
It makes sense location-wise that they would wanna play the Edwardsville(s) of the state.

It was never in that conference. They were always in the Southwestern Conference but left it in football and became independent because they are so, so bad at football. They may still be in it for other sports, though.

Simmons? Lawrenceville, 1980s Went to IU. Transferred to Evansville?

Rick Leighty from Lawrenceville played for us. Same class as Audie Matthews.

I was thinking of Tom Parker.. He was left handed. Went to UK.

Bogie Redman was part of the same 1961 Illini recruiting class as Tal Brody and Skip Thoren.

Redman '61, Pace '64, and Parker '68 were high school all americans from Collinsville during the 1960s glory years.

Yep. Jay Shidler was as good as any high school player I have ever seen. Great shooter and an explosive athlete.

Ron Felling was the coach there for 16 years. His best players I can recall were Dennis Shidler ('70), Leighty ('74), Jay Shidler ('76), Doug Novsek ('82), and Simmons ('82).

Dennis Shidler and Novsek went to SIU.

There was a Brooks kid that played at Lawrenceville and was pretty good as well....think he went to a college out east....maybe Army, St. Bonny....not sure

I remember watching Shidler bomb our school (Buda Western) out of the state tournament when I was in middle school. He was like a god. Didn’t Felling follow him to UK?

Fred Riddle the other great player on that 61 team went to Iowa. Also Roger Bohnenstiehl (sorry for spelling) in later 60s I think went to KS.

Ron Felling was an assistant for Bob Knight after Lawrenceville right? I don’t think he was anywhere else.

I believe you are correct. That last glass of vino did me sideways (and apparently off topic of the recruiting thread). Thanks for setting me straight.

Dennis Pace was on the 1965 Collinsville Champs. Spanich was also the same year. Both would have been signed in 1964 but started school in Champaign in 1965. Roger Bohnenstiehl was a great player for Collinsville in between Pace and Bogie Redmon, but went to Kansas. Pace was a "tweener". He played center for the 1965 State Champs and led them in scoring, though he was only 6'4". His college career was likely hindered by his lack of guard skills, but he was almost unstoppable inside with his quickness, moves, and uncanny shot making abilities at odd angles. We had a similar player at Paris in 1974, Chris Elldredge, who in spite of a 12 in. vertical and lack of straight line speed, could not be stopped by anyone of any size due to the same interior skills. Chris went on to help win a national title at Illinois Wesleyan with Jack Sikma. Pace was a consensus All-State selection while Elldredge was not, mostly due to Pace winning a state title while Elldredge played on a team that did not have another player over 6' tall and lost a squeaker to Quincy in the Springfield Super-Sectional. Both Elldredge and Pace were a treat to watch...they simply knew what was necessary and developed the skills to get it done.

Barely seeing anything on Watson...any updates?

That's right. Same class as Dave Sholz and Steve Kuberski. It's funny. I forget why I went to the kitchen, but remember this stuff just like it happened 50 to 60 years ago.

Little known fact. Class of 1964 Wes Unseld commited to us and signed some kind of nonbinding agreement, but flipped to hometown Louisville at the last minute.
