How about Freeman-Liberty as the transfer guard? No knowledge here, just a player I like and some Illini background.

Any recruits scheduled for visits in the upcoming home games???? I know that without weekend games it becomes more difficult for recruits to get to campus for some of these games.

Is the next window for commitments after the season? Seems odd to be talking potential transfers after the start of the new semester leading up to the tournament.

2nd signing period is usually in early April. First week? Quick google search indicates 4/13/2022 to 5/18/2022. Doubt covid impacted this timing. In the past couple years we were very busy during this period filling out roster - nice to mostly be done for 2022/2023 class

Transfer portal is killing HS kid recruiting. Why take a 18 year old when you can get an experienced upperclassman. The HS kid may transfer in 2 years anyway.

Maybe less so in basketball then football.

On the plus side - coaches have always been free to move without penalty and now the players can do the same.

I suspect Brad holds back our expected two more scholarships (Kofi plus somebody transferring out) for a transfer portal wingmen and/or a big.

Every kid who transfers leaves a spot open behind him. The same number of people graduate and leave the total pool of players every year regardless of transfer activity, so the same number of slots are open for graduating high school players.

In short, the transfer portal is not "killing" high school recruiting. It's just changing the timing.

You're 100% correct, but I think it's the COVID extra year that has created a wave/appearance of a problem that will need to work itself out.

I'd agree with that. The extra years due to COVID prevented the usual number of players from leaving at their normally-schedule time and also increased the transfer numbers. Give it one or two more years and I think the ripple effect from that will be gone, though.

Does that make it like a 0.5 sum instead of zero sum game?

In addition to the value in recruiting a transfer as a known quantity versus a high school senior, the number of 5th year players receiving scholarships next year further reduces the number of basketball scholarships available to high school seniors. This will be an issue until all the players who get a year of covid eligibility are out of college.

It should be a good few years for JC talent.
