That’s what I’m hearing. Between him and TSJ, I get that these might be extreme case but I hope we don’t go back to the “not playing the game”, “ethics champions” of the Weber days.

Besides what’s wrong with wanting your child to get max compensation for busting his !!! for a program?

Do we make career decisions based on loyalty to a company or based on the compensation that it offered? I find it a bit hypocritical. These kids often come from lower middle class households. I have no problem with a kids parents “hustling” to ge the best compensation for him and their family.
What’s wrong with not paying every potential transfer or recruit what their camp is asking for? Doesn’t mean we’re not playing the game if their asking price is more than we think they are worth.

I agree. I have no problem with this. Some poster whine that kids should want to play here because of some sort of “loyalty” and not based on the actual compensation. It’s maddening to me due to its hypocrisy because I guarantee that’s not how they live their lives.

Don’t think your assumptions are valid.

Wish I had that excuse. I was reading replies to the tweet and wondering why folks were complaining about Miami money in a Michigan thread.

Seems like a lot of money, wherever he is going.

correct. he was ready to commit on his visit to pursue. miami came swooping in the day after and purdue was merely an afterthought
Remember some NBA players got their biggest contracts and tank right after? I can see that happen with NIL/Portal. Do you bench your half Mil NIL player if he doesn't fit? I don't mind Brad being more prudent. College basketball is going to be mad. NIL can be a two edge sword.

It's even worse than your first line suggests, as the #1 predictor of playing time in the NBA is your draft order. So, not working out at that level means your coach won't bench you until you *really* suck.

The transfer portal and NIL are both in their collective infancies. You're right to point out that there will be bad with the good.

David Jones went live on IG earlier and I hopped on and commented saying to link up with RJ. He said he doesn’t have a commitment timeline also.

All in all, if we do get him, I’m gonna take some credit for it.

I'm no scout and I watched zero Depaul games, but just looking at David Jones's scoring stats leaves me wondering whether he's a good investment, in terms of rotation minutes. Yes, he averaged 14.5 ppg, but was that a function of volume, rather than efficiency?

Using Plummer as a familiar comp (selected due to similarity in ppg) ...

per gameJonesPlummer
points14.514.6
free throw attempts2.82.6
free throw %69.2%87.4%
3pt attempts4.27.3
3pt %29.7%40.8%
2pt attempts8.53.7
2pt %51.9%45.5%

Jones's 3pt % (29.7%) would have put him 7th on last year's Illini roster, comparable to Coleman, but on double the volume of attempts - not exactly a thrilling thought. Jake's volume (4.5 per game) is the most comparable to Jones's, but Jake shot them at a 41.0% clip - much more efficient.

Jones was Depaul's second leading scorer, and also second in field goal attempts per game - so not necessarily the focus of opposing defenses, but near the top of the scouting report. That could obviously skew his percentages downward, compared to him maybe being say the 3rd or 4th scoring option for us next year.

His 7.4 rebounds in 29.9 mpg seems good - puts him almost directly in the middle of Kofi and Damonte, in both regards.

Is he a quality defender? Is he more of a guard or wing? Maybe our excitement is more about projection than past production?
