He doesn’t want to play center.

According to some recent reports, Micheal Henn, a sr. big man from U. Denver, has the Illini in his final 3, along with PSU and Notre Dame. Don’t know how well this info may have aged.

"Talking through like that makes me think Illinois is damn it" - Carter

Folks we have reached
They rightfully call out that our biggest issue is the 5. I am not a particularly big Coleman Hawkins fan. I think if he is our 5 we will struggle there. Dainja looks like a solid 5 offensively, not sure about his defense. I'm not expecting us to have a defensive force in the paint at all. I think Skyy will be fine, especially because defenses are going to have to be so concerned about our 2-4.

While Nance would really be a great fit, I wish the staff would have gone after Osun Osunniyi. Good size, and while not an offensive force, he can't be ignored. However, he is an elite interior defender and a very strong rebounder. Sounds like exactly what we needed. Maybe we did reach out and he wanted starters minutes, who knows. But he looks like he could have been the 2nd best fit behind Nance.

Any interest in Mouhamed Gueye from Wash State as a transfer big? Put up decent stats there in his 21 minutes per game.

And they played when must have missed that game

They’re both able to give a few decent minutes per game, which is we need, assuming Hawk and Dain are healthy. If the latter isn’t the case, we’re in trouble (unless Lieb makes huge strides). I’m sure Mayer won’t be happy if he’s forced to play as a Big.

Doesn’t matter what you call the positions, but someone is technically the four if you play Shannon, Melendez, Mayer together.

We’d be playing a PG, three wings, and a PF/C (Hawk/Dain). That’s fine as that’s pretty typical in college ball. However we’re really vulnerable if for some reason, Hawk or Dain is unavailable. Neither is going to play 40 mpg. Your next option is probably Mayer, which I’m sure he wouldn’t be happy about.

Really behooves the coaching staff to do whatever they can to bring in another PF/C. I think you absolutely go after Nance recruiting him as a 4.

I don't think there is anyway we finish we 2 open spots. I feel we add Nance or another guy that can play the 5 in the B10

And Mayer said the staff said 3 in ESPN interview. I think we are good with Nance but maybe Nance isn’t sure on fit despite what we’re saying.
It comes down to whether or not our staff wants Nance for 1 year or Hawkins for 1 year because if you take Nance, Hawkins will probably transfer after this year. Nance doesnt want to play the 5 and the staff probably doesnt want to rely on Hawkins at the 5 either as he is much better at the 4.

Not so much "soured on him" as "reading the tea leaves" and figuring he wasn't coming here when Mayer was already here.
My point is still that 618 said nance was coming after Mayer committed… what has changed since then? I guess the answer is time, but is wondering if there was anything more concrete
