Obviously I hope we get Nance, but if not I think Butz would be a good add given what is out there. He can give us 10-15 mpg (when matchups dictate we need that much tick out of him) and I think he’d give us more than BBV and/or Payne did this year. Plus as a grad transfer, his schollie will be open again next year.

He would definitely do a better job than Nance in rebounding and defense, so it might be a good fit for what BU decides we need and when we need it --- without taking away too much tick from the other guys.

I don't know if Pete Nance stole your girlfriend or something, but this narrative you're pushing about Nance is entering troll territory. Nance has averaged between 6-6.8 rebounds in his last 3 years of college ball and had a defensive rebounding rate over 20% last year. He had double digit rebounds in 6 games last season. Butz averaged 2.3 rebounds a game last season. Never has he had higher rebounding numbers than Nance. He's gone for double digit rebounds like 6 times in his entire collegiate career. Not really sure what there is to indicate Butz is some significantly better than defender than Nance, either. There is still no fairytale world where you'd want Butz over Nance based on "fit". Butz lost his starting role on a bad Western Kentucky team last year. Nance would start on most teams in America next year.

When a man knows his limited role and accepts it, it is surprising what he can focus on. Pete would not accept a limited role.

With what we've already seen from Ty with Team USA, it's clear we are loaded 1-4. Add a veteran PG for stability or Nance (which appears unlikely). Don't see adding an old school 5 moving the needle in any regard. Might only bog us down. Even Brad mentioned in that Katz interview that Hawk played better when Kofi wasn't clogging the lane.

Old-school 5 isn't a necessity when you're blowing out teams down the court and your 1-4 is attacking the rim with aggression. Had the biggest man on the court against Houston and it felt like we couldn't buy a board. Plus their speed was always collapsing on Kofi anytime he caught the ball. Just feels like Brad is building more for speed in March.

Nance has been 15th in defensive rating in the B1G the last two seasons. He's been 16th, 8th, and 12th in total rebounds the past three seasons. He was 8th in blocks last season. Butz will be better than nothing, but he certainly wouldn't do a better job than Nance in any conceivable way on a basketball court.

It's a difference in philosophy and looking at the big picture, that's all. There is no doubt that Nance is better than Butz overall. But would he make us better as a team than Butz? That's a very complicated question. Adding a "piece" may not be better than adding a "patch." I believe we have the guys, they need to play and grow, and we just need a "patch."

Narrator: It was not a complicated question.

Re: Nance/Butz I think a lot of the argument stems from a lack of clarity on what role we are trying to fill.

IMO, for the 5 right now we have the long, athletic stretch 5 (CH) and the more physical, traditional 5 (DD) already on the roster. We don’t have the BBV/Omar “spot” 5 position filled. Lieb doesn’t seem capable of filling that role at this point.

So to to me, Nance would fill a role we already have and we would essentially be replacing CH. Stats suggest this would probably be an upgrade and, if nothing else, Nance seems more consistent than CH, but he’s also 2 years older. I don’t know if either CH or DD would be happy to be relegated to the “spot” role and may leave and/or sulk on the bench so that role likely won’t be filled anyway.

So to me the question on Butz v Nace is really whether you would rather upgrade your stretch 5 role or fill your spot role. I think Butz fills more of a need and for that reason is my preference. I understand how an upgrade looks attractive but I actually think the roster is more complete with Butz. JMHO.
