More transfer portal maddness...#1 overall recruit (to UNC) looks set to decommit (thanks to their pickup of Nance):

We didn't offer him and he seems bound to his first choice, South Carolina, if headline fails Betteridge's Law ("If it's a question, the answer is 'No!'")...

...still, fun to dream, and it has me thinking...when, if ever, has U of I ever had the #1 overall recruit?

I *think* UoI is a great place for this kid

After all Fletch will still be around. And, that alone should get him a spot in the 2023 NBA draft.

Why bother with 0440 and his dad?

Back in 80s, most publications had Marcus Liberty #1 coming out of H.S.

One publication (Strret & Smiths) had Lowell Hamilton #1 after his JR year of HS. But he dropped quite a bit during his SR year to not even being the top rated player in IL (Ed Horton was).

Another interesting one - Rich McBride was at one time rated the #2 HS Freshman in the country, only behind Lebron James. But he dropped a lot by the team he was a HS Senior.

Knee injury for McBride. He never regained his bounce.

Mcbride was physically solid for his age and could shoot with range. As others caught up he continued to fall further. He was #3 as a sophomore, around #25-30 as a junior then around #75 as a senior. I'm not sure if the injury claims have been exaggerated or just plateuing.
