You have to wonder how Weber’s tenure changes if Richmond is the player we all thought we were getting paired with Meyers.
My argument is that it doesn't, really. Weber getting great recruits he didn't want to coach wasn't a sustainable equilibrium.

In a more up to date way, I do really think it's plausible that if Groce had landed one of those big point guards he would still be here. Which makes those purported "snake bites" one of the luckiest sequences of events this program has ever had.

So much ink and emotional energy was spilled trying to theorize our way to Weber and Groce working. In the fullness of time I think it's clear that the only thing we needed to change was getting rid of both guys sooner.

One of the best things about this board is being 24 hours away from likely landing an absolute stud and Bruce Weber's name is dominating the conversation. Never change Illinois Loyalty.
The expert's consensus that he is going to commit to the beloved has killed any speculative chatter.

Honestly, this is way better than the typical skyy is falling type atmosphere leading up to a decision.

For me the Groce tenure was continually lacking that good point guard that could have made us pretty decent...not great....but decent.....however it was all the off court crap that happened....Black and Paul to just name a couple.....that made the culture somewhat toxic.

Even if he got a bunch of dudes and somehow sustained it through the mishaps back then, with the current magnifying glass on things like that, and the pressures of cancel culture, I don’t he’d be around now because of it. Would have just brought too much bad publicity to the program.

respect my decision™
I hate to break it to you but staff needs to see more of Nojus. They are just not quite ready to take his commitment. Hey, what do I know, that same source said Perrin will be here on the 1st. :DAs i've said we've got a long way to go on those '024's.

Whatever staff wants to do, I'm good with.

Hansberry wasn't a take, until he was. Nojus may not be there yet, but he's edging closer.

No diggity. We're going to go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, & Beyond, I don't know, I don't know if we'll have enough time.

For sure. He's fortunate not to have suffered long-term damage from that concussion (as far as it appears.) Wasn't he in a coma for a week?

What happened with Jamar was very sad. The summer after Jamar's DUI he was detained in Campustown and found to have been drinking in violation of his probation, and kicked off the team permanently. A month later I happened to see the Illini play the reigning Canadian university national champion team, Carleton Univ, in Ottawa, where I lived at the time. Small gym (~1500 seats) and great atmosphere. The Illini won in OT. McCamey was a frosh and looked pretty good. Steve Holdren (!) was our high scorer, IIRC. Rodney Alexander hit the game-winner. Jeff Jordan was on the bench and the Canadians heckled him mercilessly about his dad.

After the game I was chatting with some Illini fans who were following the team on its swing through Ontario and Quebec. One guy was apparently a high-$$$ booster. He and I talked about Jamar,. He said that in the spring, Jamar's ankle was clearly healed (he'd missed almost all the preceding season with a sprain.) The guy said he had attended lots of practices and that Jamar's shot and mobility looked better than ever. Said he'd never seen a purer shooter in an Illini uniform than Jamar that spring/summer. He thought it was a devastating loss to the team.

We really needed him during that '07-'08 season. Very good, sensitive kid, from what I could tell at the time. I always wondered whether the pressure and spotlight were too much, too soon for him.

He and Chester were tight. I hope they still are.
I followed D2 pretty closely at that time. The fans at Southern Indiana loved him. IIRC he worked at a grocery store and people reported that he was a very polite young man. Went on to be an All-American his senior year.

Should state, my post wasn’t in any way meant to argue with you. Just a thought I was posting as something I’ve pondered a couple times.
