Much more difficult than NBA free agency. Basically everyone is on a one year contract.
I'm not sure that's 100% accurate. Once you have transferred once, you can't transfer again w/o a redshirt year or a waiver. Hopefully, last off-season was an anomaly in regard to portal volume, because everyone suddenly had options they never had before.

I guess if you want continuity, you can recruit exclusively from the portal.... lol

At least the Illini are a Power 5. Imagine landing an under-rated Freshman at a mid-major and KNOWING there is no way you are keeping him around for a second year.

Great point.

Hottest commodity out there might be a top freshman in the portal.

Imagine how many schools would have gone after Steph Curry after his freshman year.

For all the over-the-top praise we typically lay on our recruits, DGL is getting the opposite. I don't get it. What has he done to garner all this negativity? Transfer? Dunk in a game that was over?
Don't injure your hands clutching your pearls. He's a 17 year old kid, with a lot of talent.
With fans like these, who needs haters?
I don't see that much negativity. People are just pointing out that his recent videos show him doing stuff against opponents that aren't playing defense.

There's no doubt he's very athletic.

Johnson is going to be a very good player for UI. Wish he was coming in 23. Already has the body for the Big Ten. We will need a top pint guard to go with him.

He's a legit 6'9" for sure. Last month I got a perfect look at him standing next to teammate James Brown who's listed at 6'10" and MJ looked a smidge taller than JB. So unless JB is wildly overrated with the listing of his height, worst case scenario MJ is 6'9".
Most importantly, are his growth plates still open?
