I don’t get why this is the perception by a lot of people around Duke right now…
Krzyzewski has had worse seasons than this after all…unless you mean banner in the sense of the lofty heights of Duke…but it ain’t over yet.

I cant believe I’m defending Duke yet again.

In addition to putting together a pretty respectable season in Scheyer’s first season at the helm…they’re sitting at 23 wins NOW and they are picked to win their conference tournament. That’s not too shabby.

And I hate to join you, but this is a good for a first year coach regardless of what the expectations were. Yes, he has worlds of talent on the team, but, and especially if they win the ACC Tourney, I think people have to acknowledge that he has done a decent job starting out.

I agree Duke has seemingly shown improvement as the season had progressed but the ACC is absolutely terrible this year. They are still only 3-7 in Quad 1 games.

Edited from 2-7 to 3-7. I guess a win in Chapel Hill is still a Quad 1 somehow.

Heck, at the time the game we lost to OSU was a quad 1 game I believe. That seemed crazy to me.

Thirding this. I know he broke our collective heart during the Weber years, but I can't help but wish him well. Not everybody can make ir in the NBA, and he has had some pretty big shoes to fill.

I feel the same. The days of watching a team come together as freshmen, then leave together as seniors is over. You start viewing these guys as part of the family. That's no longer the case. You always want kids to be happy, but the off-season has become a full fledge free agency and it takes away from the personality of the team and the bond with the fans/fellow students.
The ‘98 conf champs represented the best of this

Saturday Sports Talk:
This past Saturday Steve and Loren talked with a well-seasoned beat writer from Lafayette, IN. They asked him what he thought of the 2022-23 Illini. He provided an interesting response (paraphrasing)...................I think Brad is having to spend way too much time coaching "culture & effort" this year. And that sometimes happens with too many transfers. In his opinion, he thinks it's much more important to recruit your own guys and teach them the program's culture, rather than trying to force-fit the puzzle pieces with juniors and seniors transferring from other programs.

Not sure where I land on the issue, but it was an interesting take.
100% agree with this. We added two guys with NBA aspirations who both want to be the alpha dog. Most teams can only handle one alpha dog, so taking both TSJ and Mayer was bound to cause culture and chemistry problems. We would have been better off taking TSJ and a role player who may not have been quite as talented as Mayer, but who would have understood his role better.

The flip side is that Curbelo and Podz left who were expected to be anchors of your backcourt. Trying to replace with star freshman talent is really difficult late in the recruiting game. I think the reality is that most years you're gonna have to raid the portal because it's evermore a win now mentality. Ideally you get someone like an Altmeyer in football. Someone with a lot of talent that wasn't happy with their situation but has 3 years remaining to play. Could be a bench rider at Duke or a mid-major trying to prove they are Power 5 material. Easier said than done.

I think you need a healthy blend of freshman recruits and portal transfers. Because players will transfer and you'll be left getting "leftover" freshman you're taking a huge chance on. And they have a right to a 4 year scholarship.

Is Certa a shooter? Hit the 3 and mid range?

He's a 3 pt shooter. I view his as a specialist. Earlier I compared him to a more athletic Sean Harrington. I think you could also compare him to a shorter Luke Goode.

Looking at another central IL shooter from the past, Matt Roth who played at Indiana, I could see that type of career for him as well. He played less than I remembered and Harrington played more than I remembered. They both shot over 41% from 3 for their careers, and that's what we'd hope for from Certa.

Maryland is an example of a team that has consistently had strong point guards, most recently Anthony Cowan, and suddenly last spring had none and no prospects. They had three strong returners this season in Donta Scott, Hakim Hart and Julian Reese, but lost wing Eric Ayala to graduation and PG Fatts Russell, who had transferred to the Terps from Rhode Island via the portal in '21.

Kevin Willard came in last spring and snagged Don Carey from Georgetown and Jahmir Young from Charlotte via the portal. That has made the difference for them between being a contender in the top third of the BT this season and an also-ran. Young has given them 16 ppg and 30 mins per game and Carey 7 and 30, too.

Let's not be so quick to bash duke's season.... Looks very similar to another team I know from kenpom pov

Eh, not looking for specific names. They mentioned a possible big-time transfer as a possibility. I'm more curious if there are some things going on behind the scenes to give us hope that the staff will fill some obvious needs for next year's team (PG, SHOOTERS!!, a big, ...).
Speaking only for myself, I am looking for specific names.

With CoHawk another factor is the NBA toughness and rules. CoHawk has come a long way but feel his trajectory is close to Brian Cook. A fourth year to get his ppg above 16 pts and smooth out his game, get stronger.
Hawk needs to work on trajectory on his jumper and FT to make that jump. Cook could shoot in and IMO Hawk should return because as an 28 percent three point shooter from collegiate distance that’s an area that needs some off season work and adjustments. I hope everyone we add in the portal can provide much needed perimeter shooting.

Rockridge alum here...I guess I will take this opportunity for my first post (long-time stalker, er follower) and say that I hope he does terribly in his first game on Thursday, or at least just well enough for them to still lose. Just put things together reading the board that this who we are playing against. Will be down there for the game...should be a good one. The super-sectional game last night was probably one of the best HS games I have ever seen.

P.S. I wish our Illini team could move on offense consistently like both teams did last night. Was really impressed

My understanding was that both Curbelo and Podz were "encouraged" to look elsewhere if they wanted to see any playing time this season.

As an alum of Moline, I am glad I am not there having to listen to non-stop Iowa Hawkeye propaganda due to two of their recruits being on that present high school team. It’s always been annoying to have to see much more Hawkeye paraphernalia on the Illinois side of the river, but I’m sure it’s going to be even worse for the next few years. Having said that…congrats to the two young men getting scholarships to play BIG Ball.

Most of Hawkins 3 point shots in the second half of the season seem to be from 3-5' behind the arc. That is NBA distance. I agree that the percentages need to improve to make an NBA team.
