He did what every Illinois fan would have wanted if the roles were reversed. We can pretend that isn't true.

Underwood is old school. The Bobby Knight, in your face, does not work with kids anymore. He needs to change his approach, otherwise he will be gone in the few years. Kids are taking notice.

I think this is a bad take. It's worked well with quite a few players. Everyone? Heck no. But in this era, no one is remotely close to 100%, and every high level program has more turnover than back in the day. If Underwood recruits to his coaching style, he'll have many good teams.

Having said that, I'm looking at him like any top-paid coach --he needs to improve on motivating guys and getting teams to gel for the post-season. I don't that's news to him though - he seems to hold himself to a very high standard.

I agree, this dog and pony show he does is not winning kids over. In my day, I loved when a coach got in my face but kids today are educated with kid gloves and pampered. They aren‘t used to being yelled at.

I don't think that is necessarily true. My grandsons play and their coach is a maniac. It bugs me more than it does the boys. I think there is a pretty even mix of old school and new school coaching. You just have to recruit to your style.

IN my day?!?! this is a myopic view of college basketball and coaching in general. winning solves everything, we have been successful, at least up to tournament time and will get over the hump. kids are kids and the vast majority understand that coaches jump your !!! when you've been coached up only to ignore it and do what you want. listen to the other players and you'll understand. don't look at the one, or two or five videos of underwood getting in a kids face, look at the 50 other coaches who react the same way and look at their won loss records. with the portal, it is way too easy to pick up and leave. "i have a bad mattress in my room", "my teammate doesn't like me", my mom says she has bad tickets to the game", my NIL money isn't enough", my new girlfriend wont answer my text" and yes, "coach yells at me more than the other guy". blah, blah, blah.
