No, tell me more. I remember distinctly Brad saying something about our defense last year and it not being good, especially from mid February on. Also, we weren't even close to being a fast paced team last year. I think we were somewhere near 100 in possessions per last year. Our defense got cooked last year and by no means am I saying our offense was awesome, I'm just saying we can and have been able to score. A true unselfish facilitator would be even more awesome.
We quite literally were a fast paced team last year.

Look at Adjusted Tempo (possessions per 40 minutes adjusted for opponent), we were 58th out of 363 teams, which ranks #1 out of all Big Ten teams, even ahead of Iowa.

When NBA players beat him off the dribble, he can try to block their shot from behind.
Dude, they saw him and others play that sought feedback and came back to college. Podz is going to make at least 7 figures . Thats kind of my point. They NBA guys are experts and its time for the Podz not athletic and sucks narrative to stop. The combine showed the kid has outstanding hops and can play. Good grief.
I hope what happen with him gives players like DGL an opportunity to see the court to see what he can do.

I was being facetious.

However, a 39" running vertical jump tells us he can jump high. It does not tell us us he is good defensive player. Defense actually projects to be a weakness.

He had a decent, not great, 3/4 court sprint time. He runs fast enough to keep up.

His lane agility time was not terrible but not good. He is not all that 'quick'.

Physically, he has below average wingspan / length.

He does have plus offensive skills; shooting, passing, dribbling.

I suspect his issues at Illinois were mostly about adjusting to a much higher level of competition.

Agreed! You never can learn what you have in a player if you don't give them enough time to show you. Most people need time to get comfortable and settle into the game. Get a rhythm. We need to see what we have in our guys before the conference play starts and get all of our guys acclimated to playing and helping the team win early on.

Or maybe you're a guy who doesn't understand how much impact the schedule has on who wins the regular season conference championship now.

Because, you know, it's not 1989 anymore.
Or maybe I take that into account and still find that whomever emerges on top at the end of the reg season has climbed a formidable mountain and planted the flag on top. Explains why I still felt pretty damn good after that Houston game a couple seasons ago because I'll never forget (to my grave) sitting at the bar on an early March Sunday evening with my friend watching DMFW do this in the waning seconds of the Iowa game:

Illini - DMW Iowa Final D.gif

Because, you know, basketball was played before 2010 and might have something from those years to teach someone paying attention. And (hope you're sitting down for this) opinions differ and mine isn't any more "wrong" than yours is. It's merely wiser ;)

Uh. A lot of European kids are really really good basketball players. I don't know how you missed that the current best player in the world is a chubby 6'11 Serbian guy.

Look at the Wagner's at Michigan, Tubelis or Markkanen for Zona, Vescovi is south American but same principle. Even Giorgi was a pretty good college player. Morettis older brother, Davide, was also a very good player at Texas Tech.

I don't think you realize how special of a player Niccolo might be if he gets stronger and is anything like his brother. You're talking about a good passing guard that is capable of leading the country in 3 pt shooting.
Key word was obscure. I have nothing against European prospects but the guys we’ve gotten were not highly rated prospects from good leagues. At least Giorgi went to a school loaded with D1 talent and regularly faced good schools.

If your opponent knows that, which they quickly will, that can be a big problem. Playing 4 on 5 on offense is very hard. I remember teams barely guarding Chester on the perimeter. It led to some rough offense.

So while part of me says, we just need a guy that can facilitate and get the other guys good looks, another part of me says you can't be shooting 27% from 3 or they won't guard you. They will sag and make one of those other guys you’re trying to facilitate have a harder time getting open. If you get fouled and can't make your FTs, it can be almost the same as a TO. And of course the injury is a big concern.
Williams has averaged nearly 10 points a game both years he played. Chester averaged about half of that. He’s not a shooter, but he has put the ball in the hole often enough to likely keep a defense honest.

We were told repeatedly never to trust anyone

Some people justifiably concerned about Williams' injury

LvilleILL says we're not done yet with additions

A whole lot of negativity but a little less than yesterday

The NCAA tournament is either like gravy on your plate or like getting lucky with your date
Sums up the thread. Lock it. Move on.
Thank you very much.

I don't think Perrin was really random. He had offers from UCLA, Texas, and Florida. A 6'10 athletic and skilled forward that was MVP of the French 2nd league and played well in the Euroleague rising stars all star game.

Moretti isn't obscure either. His older brother was an impact player in the b12 on a team that went to that national championship. He played at the NBA academy which is relatively newer but has notably produced Josh Giddey, Ben Mathurin, and Oumar Ballo. He also played for the Italian U18 national team.

So what is known about his waiver, and health?
If he is as advertised and can go he will work just fine.

So... been away for a few hours. Apparently I missed out on more Podz blah blah blah. He definitely needs his own thread. Probably be up there with "War And Peace" by now

Cole Certa is going to IMG. Didn't see that coming. Guess we'll get a preview of whether he was a miss or not. If he can make it playing those top prep schools game in and game out, that would certainly remove a lot of doubts.

Still don't get this type of thing. You've already picked your college, why leave your friends and family? I prefer the Morez or Jeremy Fears route, go home to play.

The PG position is not just about initiating the offense, but about creating easy scoring opportunities for your scorers by breaking down defenses. This is the main reason we saw the major scoring droughts last year. Shooting percentages obviously go way up when you get better looks.
The main reason that we had scoring droughts was because we had a number of players who acted like traffic cones. I could have guarded them.

How about we stop giving scholarships to players that have no business ever seeing the floor? I don’t think the number of scholarships will ever keep us from recruiting but I don’t see the benefit of adding some of these obscure European kids when there’s always a chance of getting a mid year recruit these days.
You can't play 13. If # 10-13 are decent they are going to leave.
