That’s wonderful news if true…. I think? A couple legitimate questions.

Who’s considered our “best” player? If he’s our best player, why’s he getting dunked on in practice by a freshman?
i see what you did there doctor who GIF

If DGL is listed at 165, that means he’s probably really closer to 155.
I’ll listen to “DGL can provide effective minutes as a freshman pg” arguments when Fletch gets him to a real 170-175.
Right now Edey could knock him down with a sneeze and a fart.

He is not 155 lbs lol in fact I bet he’s more than 165. I mean, I’m 6’1, 170 with lightning fast metabolism and haven’t worked out in months. This dude is attending D1 college basketball workouts with people who get paid 6 figures to get him into amazing shape. I have a feeling that a guy who is entering a stage where he is dedicating his life to be an athlete has already been putting on some healthy weight.

Is he taller than Omar Payne?

Shall we take a little trip down memory lane? Remember when our practice HOF'er Austin Hutcherson was giving our nba draft pick Ayo "fits in practice"

It's that time of year when over zealous practice reports pile in, take it with a grain of salt. If DGL can run a semblance of an offense, count me in. But if we see a repeat of last year where coleman is taking logo 3's or MM is taking iso step back jumpers due to a lack of a facilitator, then at least we'll have these practice reports to look back to fondly
Hutch was good but unfortunately he had bad luck with injuries. DGL hype doesn't concern me, what will be concerning is if we don't
hear any Hansberry hype before the summer is through.

Next year is make or break … When you’ve got guys like Sean Miller, Eric Musselman and others that would be interested … Boosters willing to support a move if it’s necessary …

It makes making a move a little easier …
Wait Muss would be interested? Be as rash as you want. All aboard the muss bus

DGL is 7 feet tall and when he starts will consume big ten guards by the hundreds. He shoots threes from his eyeballs and alley oop dunks from his arse!

DGL is a 4-star PG. he’s also the teams ONLY true Power-5 level point guard. Does any of this buzz be correlated to, he’s the only player at his position playing so he looked that much better? Feel like it’s a fair question. Happy if he is playing at a high level so far.

I do have to ask why we think we need our guards to be built like Def Backs in football.
DGL is obviously a very skilled player offensively. I know the officiating in the BT turns a lot of games into a rugby match, but if he can move his feet and not guard with his hands he will be ahead of both Epps and Clark who were human turnstyles.
I am hoping he can play backup minutes this year.

Does anyone know if Illinois is looking at all at Jalen Rucker, a Point Guard from Army who is in the transfer portal? I see he started every game for Army last year and led them in scoring and assists.
The staff should be considering every possible point guard option out there. Counting on any of our current roster players to fill that role isn't respectful to Hawkins and Shannon and the potential they bring to a team with a decent option at the point. They had other professional options other than returning. The coaches need to repay their faith with much better roster moves to round out this team than we've seen so far this summer.

As one who is as skeptical as anyone pertaining to frosh contributions, I am pulling for DGL to make all those who count him out to have to eat their words. Nothing like having hundreds of Illini fans...who are supporters of a team to which DGL has pledged his collegiate years...discount his talents and count him as a non-contributor...especially for a team the dearly needs someone who can distribute the ball with skill, hit shots dependably, and stay in front of other B1G guards.

But...................he is a freshman. Yet, not join that crowd of naysayers until I see him play....with my support. Thanks for the news LvilleILL.

And my interest in his ability to dunk registers just below my interest in how much dust there is on the underside of the SFC hardwood resting on the concrete.
I'd love to see it too. How many times has a freshman point guard averaged more turnovers than assists in the year prior to coming here and then set the world on fire his first year here? That's why nobody is holding their breath on this sort of miracle occurring.

To be honest I pretty much agree with all of this. I've never been as high on Coleman as others. He oozes potential but has yet to show the mental makeup to put it all together. Not sure if he will.

Right now without that crucial missing piece, i.e. a proven, mature distributing point guard who is also able to score and reasonably defend, this team again looks like a a good overall collection of parts without the cohesiveness to put it all together and play like a great TEAM. I suppose the off-season isn't over yet and I'd love for them to prove me wrong (both the players AND the coaching staff).
This is why I think they would be best off with Hawkins playing the 5 and spending more time crashing the offensive glass than hanging around the perimeter.

I would be very excited if they can get Reeves and run out lineups with Hawkins as the 5th option.

Maybe he can help this year.
At least they would have to guard him on the perimeter.
Right now we are counting on Rodgers who had 1 Assist and 1 TO per game last year in 17 mpg and did not make a shot beyond three feet.
Marquis Nowell was listed at 5'8" and 160 lbs.
It is possible to play basketball if you smaller if you are tough enough mentally and physically.
If Harmon is not eligible he is going to have to play unless you want Harris out there for all of the minutes backing up Rodgers.

I like Underwood and think he’s done a good job overall, but I get all the reasons you’ve mentioned. With the resources he has available now to bring in the coaches and players he wants, we really should be a s16 team more often than not. If we have to change our systems mid season again I’ll be really disappointed. At first I saw it as having the flexibility to adapt on the fly. At this point it looks more like a failure of strategy if it happens again.

How much did Trent weigh his senior year?

Rodgers was 12/31 on 2P shots away from the basket. Similar percentage to both Hawkins (28/72) and Shannon (27/71).

Touché but I think a program with 8 national championships can have higher expectations than one with 0.

As for the rest of that idk how we went from not winning big ten championships for almost two decade to being too good for them. And if we sneak in the tournament as an 11 seed but make the sweet 16 I think underwood’s seat should definitely be hotter and id really question anyone who disagrees so no, while it’s the most important it’s far from ALL that matters. Feels like Whitmans mad that HE decided to make underwood a top ten paid coach. Im not against moving on from Underwood if the right candidate’s are lined up but not making the sweet 16 next year being the last straw seems ridiculous
Let's just put this discussion where it belongs until the '23-24 season plays out, shall we?
