These are college kids. It's often not that deep. You truly don't always know what your going to get-just need to bring in talent and they have done that. There is a world where Curbelo turns into an Illinois legend. Same with Adam. Alan Griffin could have stayed. Etc.....
Brad is not a perfect coach by an stretch of the imagination.
But he has brought Illinois Basketball back from the dead. Two big ten championships. Yes last year was disappointing, but he had to overhaul an entire roster that had Kofi, Trent, Damonte, etc and still made the tourney.
The team this year brings back a ton of talent and experience, and yes the stakes are higher. More pressure on Brad and co. But the bashing of the team and even the pg situation is something that I don't understand. This team can still be really good.
And yes they can 100% make the second weekend. Enough talk about Sean Miller or any other coach until next season is over. We have a damn good squad and I'm ready to see what they can do. After last year, they have a huge chip on their shoulder. And I can tell you right now they hear the negativity and will use that

3.8 apg for a career is not some sort of "natural point guard".

In '89 he averaged 4.4 apg on the best team in America. That would put him at 94th on the leaders list this year. His A/TO ratio was under 2 which is nothing extraordinary.

Bardo was an excellent defender which is why he started in '87 over Larry Smith. Coming into that season, no one was predicting that. Smith was much more highly regarded. Bardo also brought a lot of intangibles to the floor.

Is Ty the next Bardo? I'd bet against it, but it's not some sort of ridiculous hope.
That would be a wise bet.

If Ty is the 87 version of Steve Bardo we are knocking on the top 10 this year. I've seen comments about the # of assists in this thread - that's not the only marker of a good PG. Bardo was a great defender, good distributor and set the offense well. If Ty can do that (not to mention how well he rebounds) we will be in great shape this year.
I think there needs to be some reasonable or realistic expectations for Ty. He didn't attempt a three or I can't even recall a jumper. He was 31 percent from the line. To project Ty to suddenly take many 3s, much less hit threes or his FTs shooting to improve by 40 percent is unrealistic over one off season.

He got a Green Room invite, somebody evidently thinks he might go high

Either that or the cynic in me first thought "oh they need the storyline of someone being invited to the green room and then falling out of the first round"

Not that that's at all what I hope happens. I wish the best for Podz, just didn't work out here.

I also don't put a ton of blame on BU(or every other HM coach that passed on him before he went to Santa Clara) for him leaving. Sometimes it's just really hard to project that sophomore leap

Don’t worry, before Ty was anointed PG duties there were projections for him to average 15/9/4, might need to up those sophomore numbers though.

I think one thing to consider here is Underwood has favorite guys who he will elevate into large roles who are big effort, extra possession, dive on the floor, take no sht guys like DaMonte.
If that is the case with Ty, then he will give this kid the keys and tell the world to GF themselves.
I think DGL is a sleeper here.
He looks to already have better offensive skillset as a scorer overall than either Clark who was too slow, or Epps who was spotty and really struggled down the stretch with shooting.

If DGL can handle the ball well enough and guard a little bit we might be OK with Ty and him. He seems to be a tough kid.

If Harmon can play we will be OK and honestly we will be ahead of last year.

What do you suggest as a replacement?
We're left with "opinion" or "view" if we want to remain concise. "Take" is a softer term. If we abolish "take" I look forward to the consistently measured reactions from posters told, in response to a hot take: "awful opinion/view." Let the Loyalty Newspeak dictionary be so amended. In this event I foresee nothing but increasingly harmonious relations on the Board. ;)

While we're at it, let's prohibit any use of the word "elite", too, even if satirically deployed. As in 1984, only Inner Party Members such as BU will be permitted to use it.

And now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to resume monitoring developments on the Malabar... er... PG Front. We have always been at war with The Portal...

Supposedly Muss, idk why he’d leave Arkansas for us though. I want to have faith we’d hire the right guy but let’s not forget who hired Lovie Smith
All things considered, spring timing of hire, interim coach, coming out of a few dumpster fire years I think the Lovie hire was fine. didn't work as well as hoped, but was part of the path to get us where we are today.

That's good to hear. It's possible we do well with DGL. Not that it helps, but expectations will be low since he's a true freshman, and wasn't in the RSCI rankings. He should fit the role this team needs, even if he's not a high level scorer this early in his career. You need mental toughness down the stretch, and someone who's good at the FT line. Lotta tick there if he's up for it. I just can't see Ty there late game without a big change in his FT shooting.

I hadn't thought about it previously, but the Two Minutes Hate concept can be applied to the Board.

What is the quote about the wise man?

The wise man doubteth often, and changeth his mind; the fool is obstinate, and doubteth not; he knoweth all things but his own ignorance. Knowledge is the treasure of a wise man.
