For anyone wondering, I wanted to look at the rankings and see where the players were coming from... just looks like Morez got squeezed out. Some of the players ranked below him who made it play for Prolific Prep or Overtime Elite, which probably did not hurt their cause.

Something I thought was interesting was comparing high school ratings to transfer ratings. Domask, Guerrier and Harmon were all ranked 90-91 as transfers on 247, way below top high schoolers, which would make them fringe top-100. I don't know if Underwood just hit a series of home runs (he may have) or if it's common for the services to undervalue age/experience. What it says to me is that services may not yet have figured out how to adapt their ratings paradigm to the current era. I'd argue that you have to evaluate talent most heavily based on what a player is anticipated to contribute NEXT season. Maybe not how high schoolers have traditionally been looked at.

One of the things about kids ranked that high though, is that they typically are only in college for one season. And while they may be extremely good players as frosh, they often don't have a lot of things going for them that older players do (strength/experience/etc). Sensabaugh, Branham, Hood-Schifino, Howard, Bufkin, Houston, Christie, McGowens being some recent examples within our own conference.

That said, sometimes you get an absolute beast. So I'm not saying don't recruit those players, just that their one year in college is sometimes kind of meh.
1 and done's are awesome and sometimes I wish we'd land a few more of those guys...but the dudes who have NBA talent and stick around for 2-3 years are the ultimate recruit for a program IMO...Ayo is a perfect example. I think Fears and Morez fall into this category...future is bright...bright orange

I love Rez as much as anyone but you wouldn't trade him for Cooper Flagg?

Ask Missouri how Michael Porter worked out for them.

Much rather have 3 years of All big 10 then one and done .

The days of Kentucky and Duke winning championships with one and dones are over.

Them just making the tourney with the #2&3 players would be really damning for the talent on that roster...

I have to wonder how overvalued these top 10 kids are with P5 schools now loading up on seasoned/experienced transfers every year, plus the caveat that you probably only get these players for one season (and its a season in which they're brand new to this level, body/strength may be lacking compared to 23 y/o players, etcetera).

If you took the #2 and #3 kids off of 247's rankings and those were your best players on your team- how good would that team be? The #2 and #3 players this year were Isiah Collier and Justin Edwards. Decent, but... meh? Collier is averaging 15 ppg but his team is terrible (8-11 USC). Edwards is averaging 8 ppg for Kentucky, but if he's your #2 guy, then how good is your team? Last year Dereck Lively and Tariq Whitehead were #2 and #3, and they were fine role players on a good Duke team, averaging 8 and 5 ppg respectively. But, if they were your 1A/1B guys... again, how good is your team? Many of these kids, no matter the ranking, (1) need another year to be good college players, but (2) they get drafted on potential so you only get one season from them. As far as being effective, needle-moving college players, they are typically very hit & miss and not a sure thing at all.

Living in NC affords me the constant "pleasure" of dealing with Duke grads and fans. I have to say that the overwhelming majority of them are pompous A-holes who are overly impressed with themselves. I am a bit suspect of anyone who desires to be associated with them. Thereby, Cooper Flagg has become devalued by half due to his choice to go there. And no, my white hot disdain for everything Duke has not at all clouded my judgement on this topic! I have no biases, and I am 100% clear-headed on this topic......

For sure not THE guy, but they're still putting up 17 & 13 PER rating. That's Domask/Hawkins territory.

The only THE guys I remember on championship teams were Anthony Davis, Carmelo & DRose, but all had really good teams around them.

Really depends on the year and the player. Have to agree though that the landscape has changed with NIL, better minor league options, more transfer options and super seniors.

I think we kind of agree then that Rutgers is going to need more than just those two guys. Then, the year after that, they're likely history anyway.
