To this point.............

That's where a Coleman Hawkins return would actually add the most value. Leadership. Locker room. Tradition. Brand. Work ethic. And the unofficial coach-off-the-court, per se. (With that said, I do not expect him to return. I think he probably finds an opportunity to earn more $$$$ out there somewhere.)
Hope it happens but probably won’t.

I do think Coleman is an NBA player. He played on one leg and was stuck in drop coverage all year. He can legit guard 1-4 (kept Bouie in front of him many times), is a great help defender and can shut down bigger wings. Sneaky good hands and gets a lot of steals for a front court player. High IQ and great passer for his size although that sometimes gets him in trouble trying to make plays that aren’t there.

The only knock on him was his 3 pt shooting but he finished at close to 40% this year which is good enough to get drafted at 6’10.

If he does need something done to his knee and he’s able to fully recover and he comes back and we get a legit 5, think he can be in the running for DPOY.

Tempting to analogize to Dee's broken foot, but how lingering of an issue are we talking here?

He's had it going on all year ... Which is why we shut him down in nonconference ... And monitored him in practice ...

Not to get gross or anything but he also had several ingrown toenails that had to be surgically removed ... Which also was causing him some extreme pain for a little while ...

Film shows him as a guy that won't hesitate to shoot the 3, which is an asset I wish the Illini not named Shannon or Hawkins had more of this season. Excelled in the SoCon as a freshman, which isn't a top tier mid-major conference but is the next tier below (Samford won the SoCon this season), comparable to the WAC, Ivy or CUSA in quality.

Did no one tell him to clip straight across?

As someone who had that toe surgery 4 times myself, I can attest to the discomfort and distraction that pain is while playing hoops (even at the Y).

Hopefully Hawkins knee procedure is more "routine" and not something that could threaten his NBA future long term.

Having him back and hopefully healthy would be monumental. He could extend our streak of 1st team all big-ten. But also, ideally I'd like to have a rim protecting center next to him and him being the 4. I just feel like putting him at the 5 limits his defensive potential as he's forced to take on bigs. Kinda like the college version of Anthony Davis.

Healthy Trollman Hawkins next year making a run at BTPOY would be amusing to say the least...
