a few analysts/people I tend to respect have said Butler could surprise some next year and may be a guy that the coaches just have to play because he makes so many winning plays. Do you agree?
Our inside analyst have been saying that since the signing. I don't even know our insiders, but I trust their judgment of the ability of a kid, 99/100 times of some guy on tv/podcasts. They are just seeing film, not the raw in-person

If Coleman came back and you paired him with a defensive minded 5 like a Kalkbrenner (he would be the dream but doesn't seem like he's going anywhere)... Wow would that lineup be tough to beat. Not even sure I care so much who the other 3 starters are.

Put me in the “DGL Believer” camp. I love the kid’s passion, I was impressed by some of the minutes he gave us as a freshman and I’m a firm believer he can contribute here for several more years.

Agree. And in general I’m in favor of positional size, but we did see some limitations with that this year with our guys being much easier to screen and having trouble keeping smaller, quicker guards out of the paint.

DGL showed a really good ability to skinny up and avoid screens and in general showed some good feistiness guarding the ball. I think you can have a smaller guard if paired with bigger guards elsewhere, which we should have ( guessing 2ish wing transfers, Butler, potentially Ty). It’s when you have 3 small guards like we did a couple of years ago with Trent, Plummer and Belo where I think you can run into matchup problems.

Coleman could possibly have to get something done on his knee which would make coming back to Illinois a lot more likely
So Hawkins was able to play at a very high level with a bad knee wow. When did it happen in the season. I must have missed it or they kept it quiet

You get someone like those 2 plus Rodgers, there won't be any rebounds left for anyone else

How set is Storr on pursuing the NBA route. In other words, are we likely to have to wait until the deadline to withdraw from the draft or close to it before he announces a transfer destination?

He could get a look as an UDFA...but that's about it. Scouts def telling him to go the TSJ route.

Yes. Love his game and his potential. But in the current portal environment a ~100 ranked recruit out of high school is going to have to be special to break into the rotation as a freshman at UIUC.

Interesting as I wonder if they will back off enforcement of the new rule from this year. Way too favorable for the offensive player and the block / charge ratio got way out of whack IMO. See Hawkins, Coleman v. ISU, 2024.

And I do realize this very likely helped us this year with regards to TSJ. I just saw too many defenders (on all teams) this year getting fouls against them when they were set.

FYI Mad Illini, my groupchat avatar with my buds is the same picture. Tom Crean pics are legendary
One of my favorite moments of the crean era lol. I’m from Milwaukee and hated him at marquette long before he was at indiana. In high school he recruited a kid from my high school and I was in charge of accommodating college coaches for their visits, he was a turd. The kid, Jp tokoto ended up going to UNC. Roy Williams is an awesome guy, very down to earth and approachable. Bo Ryan was also awesome *ducks*
