I'm starting to think that the Illinois Guardians (terrible name, by the way) should have incorporated in the Caymans.

It’s not like we’re kicking kicking anyone out and you can’t force a kid to stay. Moretti role will never be more than what it was this year. He can go down a level and play. Just don’t see it with Buck on the offensive end, and it’s still not a forgone conclusion Luke is leaving.
For what it's worth, he did comment this on his end-of-season Instagram post (keeping in mind it's a 21-year-old on social media):

I don't like this. I think we were lucky this year with the mix of returning players improving and the new players contributing, the team chemistry being the positive that it was. This is NOT a reliable method of team building to rely on year after year. Last year's team didn't gel as hoped. Bringing in 10 new players will always be a crapshoot. I sincerely hope it works. But possibly 9-10 NEW PLAYERS???? Wow, that's asking and expecting a lot. I have some reservations about such a severe turnover of personnel and I truly hope that we have more than 3 returnees. Continuity is a thing...

This year has to be the biggest % of production we have ever lost in 1 season:

Shannon
Hawkins
Dainja
Guerrier
Domask
Harmon
Goode (maybe)

That’s 77 points. I can’t recall Illinois ever replacing that much in one season.

I think Harris has minutes if he stays. He brings a different and valuable look. If he can start shooting 3s at anywhere near a respectable rate, look out. My comp is Payton II on the warriors.

Goode has been a great culture representative. As a fan, I'd like to see him stay and help maintain the culture. It looks like it would be a dogfight with Jake Davis for those minutes. As others have observed, BB isn't his future. An MBA from Geis is probably the comfortable route forward. Going for an even better MBA, e.g. Kellogg, may be another option.

Can Storr be an Ayo / Shannon type leader? Is he willing to work, or do you think we have to find another alpha?

As long as 2 to 4 players are going to leave a program each year, for various reasons, there really isn't any choice to build programs in this fashion.

This is what kansas, Duke, North Carolina, and Kentucky do each and every year with freshman. It works for the most part. I realize Kentucky has been down, but that could be a coaching issue.

When he's not fouling every possession Goode is a strong and versatile defender (and an underrated rebounder).

Jake Davis is at Mercer in the first place rather than a higher level because of questions about whether he can guard anybody.

I trust that the staff feels he can hack it at this level or they wouldn't be offering. But IF he can become a non-liability that way, when I look at his highlights I see a shooter that fits right in our offense and could develop into a serious weapon at the offensive end. Very good looking quick release on that jumper and high level craft in finding ways to launch it.

Goode will be a senior and Davis a sophomore experiencing high major basketball for the first time. We will see far more of Goode next year. But I like Davis' potential.
Looks more like a Cam Spencer type than a Goode type.

I would miss Goode. He's a program guy but didn't even get to play 2 and 1/2 seasons. His leadership would be missed. Damn me for getting connected to these kids.
He had a really rough stretch of games through which many players might have checked out mentally for the rest of the season. He stayed focused on improving his game and was key to our success post season. I keep seeing the words "culture guys" thrown around. Having players like Goode on our team to set the example for the newcomers on the work level expected would be invaluable. Hopefully he stays.

It's far too early to talk about starting lineups. We still don't know who all will be on the roster. Speculating on who will get starters' minutes might make some sense.

It is interesting the comparison of Harmon to Sencire as it seems more likely Sencire wouldn't have redshirted if we didn't bring Justin in. While Justin's early season ability to shoot the cover off the ball from 3, finish at the rim, and make free throws were very favorable and made up for the giant defensive drop-off, taking the whole season and careers into perspective, this is what we see:

Harmon shot 31% from 3 and 47% from 2, both of which are right on his career averages. His free throw percentage was 92% this year on low volume (only 47 attempts), which is much higher than his 78% career average. He was a 1.15ppp player on 15% contributions rate this season, but that isn't anything close to his pre Illinois 0.94ppp average. He did have a 9.6 assomist rate and 1.3 steal rate.

Sencire in his freshman season shot 32% from 3 and 49% from 2, both better than Justin. He was only a 0.96ppp player on 16% contributions but teammate quality does have something to do with that as seen by Justin's huge jump this year as well. And he had an 11.2 assist rate and 3.3% steal rate, both much better than Justin. And Sencire was a much much much better defender overall. So the only thing not in Sencire's favor was his free throw percentage of 20% on low volume (20 free throws).

So when you compare season to season, Sencire seems like he greatly outperformed supersenior Justin Harmon as a freshman. Gut feel is if Sencire just gets a normal free throw percentage, he would be a major benefit to having him on the team and Justin played 19mpg this year...

Boswell, Storr, Hill, Maddox, Davis, TBD Big guy ...

In addition to Ty, Rez, DGL, Hansberry, Butler

Redshirt Jakstys and leave a ride open ... Or if Goode stays/Hawkins return  ...

What do we think ???

I think our doom and gloomers are so blinded by the amount of new faces they don’t see that this IS actually a multi-year team development process.

That lineup as is has enough to be a very good, competitive tournament team. You have a mix of young talented guys getting their first round of major minutes, and guys who have played a lot of college minutes.

But the payoff for that group is really year 2, with Boswell, Storr, Ty, Davis, DGL, Rez, and Hansberry having practiced and played together the ENTIRE season before. That’s 7 rotation guys, so you plug and play an impact transfer after next year, and now you have continuity AND experience, and you push for another Elite 8/ Final Four run.

Worst case scenario is you develop somebody’s game faster than anticipated, they go pro, and you have another slot to fill. But man, what a terrible sell that would be to the next guy, right? “We need you to fill his spot because we put him in the league. We have all this coming back. Come make a deep tourney run with us and then you’ll be in the league next year.”

I have Storr as the occupied spot.
If we can land 2 to 3 of Storr, Maxime Raynaud, Vlad Goldin (curious if he will meet UM admission standards), Boswell (if/when he officially hits the portal), Marcus Hill we could be COOKIN' going into 24-25.

Assuming we land Storr (with Ole Miss looming with a bag) and if we land Hill I would think that either Sencire or DGL will be looking elsewhere based on available minutes going into next year. Landing someone like Boswell almost guarantees that.

Seems Davis will be a SF/S4 coming off the bench for spacing and according to the pods and pundits he can defend pretty well easy plug and play option in the Goode role from this past year.

Still feel the biggest question well need to answer is a vet S4 to ease the development of Amani who will likely get 4/5 minutes next year. Exciting time leading up to the eventual dead period.

Well, in fairness to the doom and gloomers I think you're the first to call it a two year project. I think your take is pretty good.

So is offense the main reason Buck wants to transfer? Have to imagine coaches aren’t pushing him out given his value on defense.

I don't personally like the state of college basketball now, but it is what it is. Everything evolves over time and we must adapt.

I think an interesting, continuing storyline of the NIL money and transfer rule changes is in the coaching ranks. I think everyone can agree there were programs who played loosely with the rules before these changes. The coaches of these programs that year after year brought in the top talent looked like the second coming of John Wooden in their success.

With a more even playing field established and a different set of evaluation skills necessary, it will be interesting to see which of our former top-tier coaches fall by the wayside in this new landscape. I could make the argument that a few have shown an inability thus far to operate in this new environment while others have thrived with the new opportunities. Interesting times for sure.
