Some of you overrate Goode. Dain was a much stronger piece than Goode. I love the kid but Luke is a one trick pony who was perhaps the worst defender on the team. Keeping Luke over Dain, if that's what they do would be a real head scratcher.

If your aspirations are a Natty, a player like Luke can never be more than a role player.

I trust your sourcing that this is how Brad feels and what has been communicated to Goode.

But when the rubber meets the road of the 2024-25 season, I don't think it's the truth. Brad would play Goode more than that because of the attributes he offers and because life happens and everything else isn't going to proceed perfectly according to plan.

Listen, I'm the one always defending BU against some of the looney tunes around here. I have tremendous faith in him.

But I also watch basketball and have my own opinions.

What we're seeing in the PortalWorld is the value of having battle-tested seniors all over the roster. Dain Dainja and Luke Goode are, among other things, battle-tested seniors.

Our NIL power is such that if we want to keep Goode and Dainja, we can make that happen. It would come at a cost to our other ambitions, but we could choose to make it so.

We chose not to with Dain. I hope we're not making the same decision with Goode.

Experience and continuity are valuable assets.
You think Dain only left because of NIL? The long stretches on the bench and not fitting well with what BU wants to do had nothing to do with it? Probably right I’m sure Dain doesn’t want to be a starter let alone play more than 11 mpg. Those 13 games he played 6 minutes or less likely didn’t impact his decision. Sure we could pay him 2 or 3 times over “market price” and he’d likely stay. Sounds like a smart way to use the money.

logically it makes sense to have 3 year role players with limited skill sets move in if they desire.

In this day and age if a guy wants to play 30+ mins he can find a home to do that if he’s a role player on an E8 team.

I’d bet the number of guys who are 3 year long bench players at the P5 level don’t stay for the 4th year nearly as often as pre-NIL.

To be clear, as to both Dainja and Goode, I have no doubt that if the staff told them they were starters and central pieces of the puzzle to next year's team and made them an NIL priority in line with that, both guys would stay. Neither is desperate to leave.

And I would speculate that neither guy would really be beating the bushes for top dollar elsewhere either. We could have them at reasonable prices that would impact our ambitions elsewhere in the portal, but not take us out of the running for Storr or whoever.

If they're leaving it's because Brad doesn't want them to be focal points of next year's team. He prefers to max out on the portal.

There are good players in the portal and our staff scouts really well and has a ton of resources to play with. But I would have made a different choice, I think having a lot of continuity supplemented by a targeted big portal scorer or two would have been the stronger path.

Hopefully I'm wrong. I have a lot of faith in BU, and I know he'll fine tune whatever he ends up with over time. We shall see.

From what I am hearing, who knows if it is true, is that every transfer away from the program has been Brad’s doing, with the exception of Epps. I asked my guy is Goode is the same, and he said yeah, if Goode is gone it’s because Brad doesn’t have a spot for him. Hate that if it’s true 😔

Question. Say a player decided that they wanted to leave via portal. How much do the coaches help them find a good matching school. Can the coaches assist?

Does the guy who wrote that champagne room article actually think Davis is going to play booty ball? Domask Did those moves for four years at Southern Illinois.

I can't believe Goode would leave. He's in line for a HUGE role next year.

And lets not forget that we let NBA Rookie of the Year Brandin Podziemski leave because we wanted Luke Goode to start. Now we're Creaning him? What are we doing here?
I love Goode and want him to stay for continuity, culture and role player reasons. BUT.. that being said (season was declared open, correct? :)), haven't we said the above after his freshman year, sophomore year, and now his junior year? Given the level this staff recruits at, I think he can aspire, compete and hope for significant minutes, but I'll stop short of declaring he's in line for a huge role.

Well sure if you promised them a starting position and central pieces (I.e. minutes), they’d be back. Why would we do that? You think that would make us a successful team?

Yes.

I also thought we'd be a successful team with RJ Melendez and Jayden Epps. I still do.

I'm a sucker for our existing guys, I get it. But Luke Goode isn't Skyy Clark, Dainja isn't Bosmans-Verdonk. These are battle tested seniors to be who are going to be playing their best and most impactful basketball next year as leaders and strong characters. That's where I'd be making my bet.

Exactly, Luke's a great kid but he's nothing more than a role player on a deep tourney run team.

I very much doubt that he is with Wemby being a rookie.

Yeah, I think saying HUGE in all caps when referring to the role Luke Goode would play on next year's team is getting way carried away here.

He is a good shooter, serviceable rebounder and average defender. Even as a shooter, he will never be a volume guy because he only shoots it well if given plenty of time & space and he's completely set / no dribble.

This isn't a guy who is going to give us a Jameson Battle type senior season (just for instance), as much as we want to root for the guy.

EDIT: All that being said, if Luke wants to transfer somewhere else for more playing time, it's more likely that he's doing that of his own accord based on honest feedback from the coaching staff (and not because he's being "Creaned" or something stupid like that).

Your at a strong academic school, you never going to get more than 20min a game, you have no professional ambitions.
Do you transfer?
The portal dramatically increases uncertainly. You play 10 to 20 min a game your first two years, looks like you will be a starter your third year and someone from the portal comes in and alters the plan.
Smaller fish in big pond, or the big fish in a smaller pond?

There are 13 scholarships, and generally only 8 or 9 are going to get significant minutes throughout the year. With transferring becoming more of a thing, these types of situations are more organic now. There isn't a need for Brad to sit down and say, hey we're not sure it's going to work out. Goode can see who we are bringing in and decide whether he thinks he's going to get a minutes cut because of it, or he can stay and try to outwork the competition.

Seems like only a matter of time before the 13 scholarship rule goes by the wayside. At least give the same amount (15) as the women.
