If Jase does decommit wondering what landing spots are available to him. Sure there are openings at the P5 level but any place decent is going to be looking at the portal to fill spots just like we are. Maybe he goes the mid major route but any decent P5 level program I think it’s an uphill battle for any non 5* freshman to earn PT.

Players graduating in 2019-20 did not get the extra year. Only 2020-21 is considered a “Covid year.” Otherwise we would’ve gotten another year of Andres Feliz.
Yeah you're right. I always assumed they gave the 2020 athletes that lost out on March madness another year.

This Ty stuff is absurd he just played 22 minutes a game on an elite-8 team and I think there is an argument that Brad should have used him more for large parts of the season. He needs to continue to improve(especially finishing), but he's a plus rebounder, incredibly versatile defender, and just a perfect glue guy. Everyone obsessing over his 3pt shooting needs to relax.

Stephon Castle is probably the 2nd most important player on UCONN and is shooting 26% from 3 and doesn't take many. Houston played 6'7 and 6'8 guys that don't shoot.
Forget 3-point shooting. He needs to be able to hit a 10-15 foot jumper at a decent rate. I'm not sure I've seen him score from beyond virtually at the basket.

Even if he's playing PF, he needs to be able to shoot some.

He significantly improved his FT% from the previous year, so I think he can do it.

There's a reason for the likely decommitment with player/players we are bringing in. All I will say for now.

To be honest, I am a bit disappointed in Jase's mentality. While he probably would not play much at all next year still think it's a bit soft

Good then, right? That’s a potential issue removed. Yes the potential is obviously there but potential is never realized without the right mindset.

For all the posts about Ty, people need to understand how basketball is played nowadays. You need to be able to create space on the court. Ty can not do that. Ty will never increase his around the rim percentage because as long as he can’t create space, he will be guarded by the opposing teams center playing zone in the paint for rim protection. A 6’6 vs a 6’9+ at the rim in confined space is a trade off most teams will take defensively, because you’re forcing a tough 2. He has to build his 3 point shot, period.

Also, yall need lay off my boy gritty. After years and years and multiple names the board is better when he posts here. It creates conversation, which is the point, and how can you not love somebody who is so incredibly invested in their opinion for right or wrong. It’s both informative and hilarious.

Just want to make sure we don’t have a certain assistant coach leaving for a head coaching job somewhere, do we?

I was thinking that, too. But that rule only applied to spring sports, and basketball is a winter sport…so basketball missed out.

Ty has value just as he is. He defends well, rebounds well and rarely loses a battle for 50/50 balls. Everyone knows he needs to add to his offensive game to stay on the court more. If you watch a lot of college basketball, you notice most teams have players that have limitations in their game. The ones that don’t are still playing.

Well I haven't seen us bring in anyone yet, so I'm a bit cautious on these things. Kids tell coaches/recruiters what they want to hear, and they don't always follow through.

Storr, Maddox, et al could be telling our staff they are coming and be saying the same thing to other schools.

It’s a dead period. As insiders have said look for action/activity late this coming week or next

Even the teams that remain have clear limitations. For example, last night I watched an interesting analysis video of Stephon Castle's play this year at UConn. The criticisms were: (1) not a willing three-point shooter; (2) hits at ~25% rate from 3-point range and so is often guarded by the defensive 5 who is dropping back into defensive coverage in the paint; (3) not long enough to score at the rim at a high enough rate.

I was amazed, since I thought the kid looked great yesterday versus Alabama. But from an NBA perspective, I admit that even a college freshman as talented as Castle has work to do.

Discussion here over the last couple of days, or more really, has been great. Very informative (citation: Illinois Loyalty Grapevine, April 2024), insightful, differing perspectives bringing attention to a variety of issues related to roster building. Good work, fellers, :)

Also: good to hear that those not meeting the EDG standard are looking for somewhere else to play. That is actually very reassuring.
