One thing that's striking to me with this list is the in-state guys that are being targeted in the portal.

Boswell - Champaign
Maddox - Chicago Heights
Storr - Rockford
Hill - Rockford
Amos - Chicago

If this plays out our marketing team must be salivating at the in-state content potential.
And I genuinely believe that gives guys a connection to the school and to each other that gives us an edge and takes some of the free agent mercenary aspect away.

The point is this: we can either build every offseason with top level transfers outnumbering homegrown players significantly, thus continuing to make the tournament and fielding competitive teams that compete for conference titles, or we can do it your guys' way and prioritize stability and risk having completely uncompetitive teams for entire seasons in the hopes that the guys will take their lumps and will become a greater sum of their parts once they have 3-4 years in the program.

The coaching staff is prioritizing fielding teams they think can compete for championships every single season, they shot for the moon in 2023 with "elite" level transfers but the main issues with that team were our star HS recruits being team cancers and our homegrown players not improving as expected (RJ). Imagine how dogsh*t that team would've been without TSJ or Meyer. And that team still made the tournament comfortably, finished top half of the B1G even with a concerning late season slide.

Have some perspective, if that's a worst case scenario with the upside being seasons like this one, sign me TF up. If you want us to strive for current decade MSU level purgatory because Izzo refuses to acknowledge the current state of CBB in 2024, then so be it, but the staff doesn't and you need to come to terms with that instead of constant dooming.

Portaling is like JUCO basketball. New teams every year. As someone that watched a lot of Vincennes and Wabash Valley growing up, it is up and down.

More likely at the D1 level if you portal every year with a bunch of new starters best case you wind up like Iowa State under Hoiberg. Or Musselman when he was at Nevada.

I think ideally you want to get guys like Davis and Boswell for multiple years that are also proven players. Way less risky than freshman. Storr I think this staff can use also. Some of the other guys mentioned here I’m not very high on if they are just 1 year dudes

This is one of the reasons I dislike BU. Seems like he blows a lot of hot smoke at recruits and their family with empty promises knowing full well he has a bankroll to make that go away. It's just smarmy to me. It would be hard to commit to play for a guy who will go shopping to replace me.

Which is why Butler reopened his recruitment. Until Illinois starts regularly bringing in top 30 kids (Morez & Fears) freshman playing time will be limited (Hansberry & DGL). Not sure it is my preferred method of building a program, but can't complain about the 23-24 results.

Does 24-25 look like 23-24? or 22-23? Obviously too early to answer that but will be interesting to watch this playout.

Besides Hawkins, Frazier, DaWilliams has Coach underwood had any other guys start and finish at Illinois?
Ayo, Kofi, Giorgi off the top of my head.

Castle also scored 15 points on what is a top 10 Kenpom defense. He’s also a projected lottery pick. Comparing Castle and Sencire is not even close.

Hopefully Sencire can develop into a two dimensional player but from everything I saw his freshman year he was extremely one dimensional and didn’t value possessions at all. He was more interested in proving to the coaching staff that he could score instead of making the right play
A lottery pick because of his athleticism and defense.

The way I look at it, 1st season was a disaster. 2nd season good until giant 30pt dump. See how the rubber match 3rd year turns out in the portalling scabs Era. At some point this will be college basketball's juiced ball era

Because A) revisionist history
B) people like shiny new objects and forget about the dumpster fire they caused in 2023.

We need to slow the hype on Sincere. Very similar to the hype we used to see with Goode. Incredibly hyperbolic.

Lol. You're asking what role he can have and then saying he literally does everything else well except shoot.

Draymond Green was a key piece that won 4 NBA championships and he wasn't a shooter. Shooting is great but it's college basketball. You don't need every player to be a shooter at all times.

He just played a major role on the 2nd best offense in the country. Yeah he didn't shoot and he needs to improve on finishing at the rim but Illinois had a bunch of other guys to take shots.
This is my knock against BU. All gas no breaks. Only 1 ball. 1 person gets to put said ball in the hoop at a time.

Defense, rebounds, ahd assists used to get playing time.

I think because he no longer can compete with Jaden Bradley. Bet Jaden takes over the point at AZ next year. We'll see though.
Even so, he started at PG on a team that was top 10 in the country the majority of the year. I’ll take, along with some pretty impressive stats.

Lol. You assume I have some "way" that is opposed to some "way" that you have. I assure you that you have no clue how I'd go about navigating this because I don't have a clue myself.

I merely point out a fact and because you're afraid of its implications you attack me instead of addressing the fact.

Honestly I was just talking about how Green used to shoot like sub 30% from 3 and teams would just leave him wide open but he was incredibly valuable because he did everything else.

But looking at college he did have a really strange jump. 0-1 as a freshman and 2-16(12.5%) as a soph while shooting 65% from the line over both years. Then shot 36% from 3 as a junior nearly 39% as a senior.

Ty is currently 0-1 from 3 for his career but he significantly improved as a free throw shooter(was actually shooting 62% until he finished the year 0-4).

I'm not saying he's going to take a Draymond like leap of anything but if you look at his high school film his shot doesn't look broken or anything. A little flat but nothing terrible. And he's Jason Richardsons nephew you're telling me he can't work and shoot 30% on open set threes to at least keep defenses honest?
I think people in this day and age just want immediate gratification, have infinite expectations, and only see things in black and white. If someone isn't the best at everything they're trash and onto the next. Now yes, that's tongue in cheek, but I also think that many in this fanbase (and fans of college sports in general) just don't really have the time or patience anymore for underclassmen to develop, and don't really realize how extremely abnormal it is for an underclassman to come in and light the B10 on absolute fire. And in some ways it makes sense as you used to look at a B10 team's redshirt senior starter who would tear it up and say, man I can't wait until this kid graduates or I can't wait until we have a 5th year starter of our own, but now your 5th year senior theoretically never graduates because your team can just buy a new one in the portal. Instant gratification. No development needed. So an underclassman can be phenomenal at some things but will still have holes in their game, because underclassman while that shiny 5th year senior is older, bigger, more experienced, and has fixed many of those holes.

And Ty is one of those players who unfortunately doesn't fit that instant gratification doesn't have major holes in his game 5th year senior, i.e. "trash" and "fully replaceable". But the question that still is up in the air is what happens if one of those underclassmen do develop and fix those holes in their game to supplement the things they are truly elite at? What if Ty, so pissed off about how he performed against UCONN, spends the whole summer challenging himself to get better body control, take contact, finish at the rim, and even develop a baby hook or short jumper? Then suddenly Ty's that guy every single team is salivating over to portal to them whose skillset isn't something all that easily replaceable.

And one final thing, Gritty has said some things about this as well, but team chemistry, maturity, and experience with a coach and systems are all intangibles but they do have importance and can cause unforeseen issues. I should perform a statistical analysis on it, but overall, 1st year transfers do tend to be a lot more of a mixed bag than transfers in their 2nd year, even at the same age. Familiarity does seem to have a significant role. That doesn't mean you shouldn't aggressively pursue the portal, but it does suggest balancing that with some development of promising young recruits.
