We wanted him to foul. We wanted Purdue in the bonus, so that if we needed to turn it into a FT shooting contest in the last 30 seconds, we could. We didn't want our regulars to pick up fouls for that purpose. It was Amani's job. At least that's what Brad said post-game... (around 11:30 in his post-game presser)
Good to know! I didn't hear that. Makes sense.

Still, even if you remove that game entirely from the sample, Amani was committing a foul every 3.7 min he played in conference. The point still stands that while he has great potential, and could very well be an amazing 25 min/game big next year, it's probably not a great idea to rely on him being that kind of player just yet.

Domask ended up filling our point gaurd needs without really being a point gaurd. We had a great offense without having great offensive flow at times that a true point gaurd would have been able to create. The debate about us needing a point gaurd was just. We didn't have one but we're able to compensate with Domask bringing it up emphasizing ball security not creating. Last year will always be remembered by me as one of our greatest ever and an amazing accomplishment considering we didn't have a true point gaurd.
It has become apparent you like discussing the point guard position.

While the stigma a starting spot is nice, I see Morez getting around 20mpg regardless of whether he starts or is coming off the bench. It's a young frontcourt, there should be a lot of rotation there and a lot of shared minutes. I don't see a universe where he's stapled to the bench aside for spot minutes, unless he really really really underperforms expectations. He'll be seeing the court with significant minutes.

A lot of people here are seeking a certainty about the future that simply does not exist. Probabilistic thinking will set you free.

The only certainty in this Universe is that there is no certainty.

This is where Quantum Physics meets Illini roundball. In the quantum model, all things exist in a state of infinite potential (potential outcomes) and all things are possible all the time.

So this is with Our Beloved. There is an infinite number of possible player additions and outcomes for next season. Many players themselves have no idea where they’ll be playing and if joining a certain squad will work out for them or not.

The only things for certain are that the Illini will put on the floor a fine group of Every Day Guys... and Scott Drew is staying in Waco and not moving to the Blue Grass State... and Kentucky will throw a boatload of money at somebody to try to revive a sleeping giant.

Other than that... anything is possible.

We have two true point guards on the roster. Just waiting for their chance to play.

Boy did I need to do a double take with that name. I thought "man if HE'S still got eligibility left then Domask better get his waiver."
Lol Coleman-Lands did end up playing for 7 seasons and winning a title with Kansas.

I was a junior in college during his freshman year at Illinois and I finished a PhD during his final year of college basketball.

With all due respect, I agree with your post. With that being said, I can't agree more. Irregardless, you have pointed me towards somethings like an expresso machine this morning. (I also dislike BOOM)
I enjoyed this post too much. I work in a place where a guy says, "With that being said," every other sentence. And my kid's old teacher used to use "irregardless," in emails home all the time. She even put it in a field trip letter.

The overestimate on the depth of our roster by this board is extreme. Players are not transferring here to not play nor are players staying here to not play.

I’ll assume 10 players who expect at least some playing time. Any transfer over 2 more will either be a 1 in 1 out scenario or a transfer who isn’t in the rotation (project). For example, if we get Boswell and Storr then any transfer after than would cause a transfer out.
we all agree there will be additional movement in the roster

I don’t think any of the 4 potential transfers in are not going to come because they are worried about playing time

Boswell - starting point guard day 1
Storr- will start
Maddox- will likely start but will have to compete- he’ll be our best three point shooter so he has that going for him
Booth- knows we’re thin up front and will play significant minutes

Freshman bigs foul. Next year Amani won't be a freshman big any more, and Morez one of his chief competitors will be.
As the person who just posted a little earlier about probabilistic thinking, I'm pretty surprised by this statement, particularly in the context of what I was replying to.

If we get Boswell, Storr, Maddox and Booth then two players are transferring out this year from below. There isn’t enough minutes. There is no such thing as 12 man depth in college basketball.

Pope is a nice player but I would much rather bring a Champaign native home than grave rob Oregon State with the wealth we stole from them.
Boswell definitely a better fit. Much more of a PG than Pope. I’ve loved watching Pope on Beavers, so it would be fun to be able to cheer for him on Illinois. But I think he might just be a backup plan.

That's what happens to freshmen bigs in the B10 before they put on the extra 15-20lbs of muscle their first offseason and start learning better footwork and how to defend and challenge opponents just as big or bigger than them. Happens every single year to pretty much every single B10 freshman big, especially when they go up against juniors and seniors. As for judging Amani based on how he played Edey when Underwood said he told Amani to go out there and be extremely physical with him. I mean, even if you take the Brad gameplan out of it, you have a freshman going up against a generational two-time player of the year upperclassman. What are you expecting? Kofi struggled with Sophomore Edey. Senior Edey>>>>>>>Sophomore Edey. Thinking a freshman Amani is going to do anything but lose that 1 on 1 matchup badly is just not reasonable and would mean Amani is probably a guaranteed lottery pick.
So, for the sake of clarification relative to the important takeaway from my post, you would feel comfortable relying on Amani as a potential starter or 25 min/game guy next year, and therefore take pains to not recruit over him? I like -- really like -- the potential that Amani has but if we're thinking about this from a program perspective, I don't see how you could stake so much of our potential success on his ability to jump into that role next year, with fouling as one reason among others. I think it's far more likely that Amani's trajectory is like that of Coleman's, meaning he averages around 15 min/game as a dual purpose backup 4/5 as a sophomore, with the potential to earn a starting spot as the season goes along.

Referring to Maddox: Louisvilles sell- $ & being the guy.

Illinois sell- solid $, playing for a culture program that can do some serious winning, being a major part of that team, and playing with really good players, a very good head coach, and the best Strength & Conditioning coach in the nation...
