I agree with that 100%, however.....will agree with that? If he wants to start and doesn't, then in April 2025....

Finding guys that are ok being role players will be limited to being gotten via the portal for these coaches. I'd think that it's a tough as for a coach to go into a high schoolers living room and sell that pitch?

I think he's in line for big minutes next year in a Harmon-type role (with hopefully more dynamic offensive capability). Even if you bring in Maddox and Storr there is still room to plenty of PT for him.

Does school (academics) even mean anything to these kids anymore? Or, when you are playing at this level, are the academics so watered down or “assisted” that school doesn’t matter? I know how hard it was, 30 years ago, to transfer and get credits accepted at a new school, things must have changed dramatically.
To some it does, because they're smart enough to know that basketball is their means to a traditional career path. Those are the kids who stay, like Goode. To others, it isn't, because they think their future career is basketball.

Why even scout and recruit high school kids if you’re going to recruit over them? I don’t blame these guys for transferring out personally I think it’s BS to say we wanted you in the beginning and now you’re not good enough so you’re gonna sit on the bench why even get any commits if this is what’s gonna happen?
Works both ways. This is why you recruit HS kids and don't blowup the relationship if they don't pick Illinois out of the high school. Just took them another stop or 2 before playing for Illinois

+1. I’m a staunch believer that athletes should be paid what they’re worth and I’m happy that the new system allows a wealthy program like ours to have year-in-year-out success. I can also admit that I don’t have the same sentimental feeling towards our 1-2 year transfers that I did towards the Dees and BP3s of the program in the past. To me, the trade-off is a clear plus but I understand how people feel differently.
Yep, and it's okay to acknowledge that while some things might have improved and become more fair, there were also good things about the "good old days" ... that's the way everything works!

Remove the sit a year penalty and this is what we get.
We are where we are in college sports because the NCAA was so weak and frightened and desperate to vent off public pressure about 10-15 years ago it tried to "pay" players with freedom of movement in lieu of money.

It could have been SO different if they'd surrendered on NIL first.

I give the kid a lot of credit.. I believe that he took the RS to invest in his future and he wanted it to include the O&B. From the video it looks like he put in the work to get better. The timing also speaks to me about his intentions. He didn't enter the portal when the insiders all agreed that he would be recruited over. He waited until it happened. I choose to believe that if the rumored '"silent verbals" didn't materialize he wanted to stay. In the end he's going out to do what he thinks is best for him and I can't fault that. Personally I hope that is going to a smaller school, killing it, and coming back for 25-27!
I agree. Nice post.

BTW, I had a couple of classes with Perry Range.

I wonder what DGL is thinking about us adding Boswell and possibly Maddox.
Well. He likely ss a smart kid and knows thats how it is today. This is not unique to the Illini. It happens at all good programs. So if he goes to a good team that won't stop it from happening.

I say only recruit 5 stars for freshman and transfer portal everyone else. Similar to UConn
I disagree for the 10/11-13 spots on the roster. Those guys aren't going to play (unless disaster strikes with injuries), so I don't think relying on a rotating cast of transfers that won't play is useful for those spots. I want those spots to either be guys with upside or guys that will reinforce the cultural foundations of the program (guys that help the 8th or 9th guy work through playing less than they wanted). For the former, I'd rather take high character players with high upside (like your Jakstys) that could become valuable really quickly, and if that happens, find a way to make sure they want to stay for their 2nd/3rd year. The other player archetype would be the good bench guys that mostly know they won't play -- better Liebs, basically.

Again, when we have a few years of data to draw conclusions from, it might be that recruiting high school kids is a waste of resources. Or maybe it's more subtle than that. Hard to tell amidst all the chaos.
I don't see it going this way, look at examples like Terrance and Quincy where the relationships pay off in the end. Also I still expect their will be Ayo/Kofi/Coleman examples where you keep kids through their careers. Then add the occasional flyer (like Lieb) that you take with the hope he develops and fills in the back end of your scholarships where I don't see anyone is transferring in to be out of the rotation. But the old days of building your roster with upper classmen that have stuck around since the beginning probably never happening again. (extreme example maybe 97-98 team with 5 Seniors )
