Absolutely sucks to lose Scencire. I think he should transfer to a team that plays a full court pressing frantic style if there are any that still play that way.

I think it’s as simple as Chester was Sencires guy here and he’s following him out the door. That kind of stuff happens frequently.

Not too bent out of shape about this.
I would also guess there is going to be more playing time on the table wherever he chooses to go (WVU?). It seems like folks on here think he was run off by the staff, but my guess is there was a spot for him but he was starting to see the writing on the wall that that role would not lead to much playing time. So he did whats best for him. I have zero inside information, just my guess.

So, I waded through 20+ pages on the old, now closed, recruiting thread (which, I think I deserve some kind of medal for) and didn't see my following question answered, though some posts made suggestions. I was just curious, and this isn't really very important, I guess, but why did Boswell leave AZ? I mean, it seems like a lateral move. AZ has a pretty darn good program. I think they were rated above the Illini for most of the early season, at least, I think. There was one post that mentioned a problem with the AZ coach and then a few that referred to Caleb Love. Again, just wondering.

We're cheering for uniform colors now. I understand its the new way it works, but I can't imagine anyone who loves or particaptes in college basketball REALLY loves this arrangement.

It absolutely sucks.

College basketball is the only sport in the US that has been reduced to the entire roster being on 1 year contracts.

MLB, NBA, NHL dont operate like this
College football, baseball technically could but you don’t see the movement like in college basketball

Dare I say the NCAA is killing the Golden Goose. If only Charles OBannom could have gotten paid for being in a video game, and that was it…

NCAA could fix a lot of this if they only allowed non-sit out transfers for players whose coaches leave

It sucks, but welcome to college basketball in 2024. Brad's job is to get the best players possible right now. Maddox or a couple other guards we are looking at are upgrades over Sencire for next season

Sports is all about... competition. That is what Sport is. You compete in various ways, always. So it must be with recruiting and how players react to that. You must seek talent wherever you find it... high school or Portal. Cream rises to the top kind of thing. Coaches and programs would not be doing their due diligence any other way. And they would selling their fansbases and insitutions short if they set the bar any lower than that.

Players in high school or college have to embrace ‘competition’ or they would never have gone into sports. It’s just that there’s a new form of competition going on in college ball... the competing to get with a program and find floor time each season anew.

This is a great and exciting environment. The fact that rosters will look different from year to year should not scare anybody. It simply means that you now can put the very best guys you can find on the floor every season... and that is at the heart of putting teams together and pursuing a winning season.

Blessings upon the Portal... and guys now with the power to find the right fit and program for their game and future as well.

I guess this is the new top 20 model

1. recruit best HS players you can but assume you will lose a lot of them to portal
2. go to portal every year and bring in experienced upper classmen who contribute immediately
3. leverage relationships built during HS recruiting to get players on rebound - IE TSJ, Quincy, Tre, Kylan
4. Use NIL to get/retain key players

We are fortunate
1. Brad has adapted very quickly to this new model. Others like Calipari and Izzo are struggling
2. We have good NIL program to support this model
3. We have proven our program helps portal transfers succeed - TSJ All American, Marcus all Big 10, Alfonso 3rd team all B10
4. We are coming of BT championships and elite 8 run so we are viewed as successful program. Good players don't just want playing time and NIL$ - they also want to win.

I am sure a lot of programs want to emulate our portal success.

We can assume IL pays higher. If you get paid 150,000 at one internship, but another internship pays you 300,000..you’re probably going to take it.

Major D1 basketball roster spots are now basically paid internships for the NBA. Most kids will go to the internship that pays them the most bc the end goal is still the same

1. AZ struggling in tourney
2. Bad locker room chemistry - 6 AZ kids in transfer portal
3. Caleb Love - bottomless pit. Never passes the ball back. Shoots every time -think Russell Westbrook as teamate.
4. Jaden Bradley stole a lot of Kylan's minutes last 2 games of NCAA tourney

Insiders, or others that have heard anything: 3 guys intriguing to my untrained mind are Cade Tyson, Trey Townsend, and Great Isobar. Any clues on where they are headed, and whether we have any interest?

Maybe being a Champaign native helped? Who wouldn't want the chance to bring a title to their hometown?

Also, the Illinois program is slowly approaching elite territory under Brad, and the NIL package probably helped...

The old-school traditionalist in me wants to like this post, but the "hey Illinois seems to be doing better in this new world order" part of me is a lot louder these days.

Am I? What point did I miss? The post I responded to implied that fans have trouble rooting for transfers into the program, and that's clearly not true.

Clearly you don't realize that Tracy Abrams and Maverick Morgan are more beloved Illini than 2 year mercenaries like TSJ or 1 year wonders like Domask......E8 and Conf. tourney titles really can't compare to those BTT QF appearances

/s (No disrespect to Tracy or Mav, Illini for life....just pointing out the ludicrousness)

Westbrook actually passes but he forced too many shots. Love on the other end... Now think about this Lloyd might be a good coach that they actually made the sweet 16.
