Re: Sencire

I've been pondering how that all went down with him today.

It almost seems fair to me that if you redshirt and utilize all the resources of the school during that redshirt year, then you should be required to stay for the next year. The only way out would be sitting out a year, if player choice. Or if the team releases the player, he can transfer immediately.

I like Amani, but Booth is very easily a better shooter than Amani was ever going to be.

Booth shot under 30% from 3 on 118 shots. A very high volume. This guy is not a good shooter and he doesn’t do anything else.

A 6’10 guy that only shoots 3s, and does nothing else on the floor. He need a ton of work.

Not a fan of this pickup at all.

20 mpg, 0.5 assists. Doesn’t create anything.

61% of his shots were 3s. No offensive rebounding put backs here.

The stats tell you what this guy is.
He’s Michael Finke. Don’t get caught projecting athleticism and ignoring production

Amani and anyone else had/has to understand, If Illinois didn't recruit another player at his position and Amani was out weeks because of his back. People would immediately wonder how we were not prepared with Amani already experiencing back issues causing him to miss multiple game. A back injury is not an injury I would want to have to hold out hope on every game. I think he has all the potential and seems like a great kid, hope it works out for everyone!
I think they understand that. Where it used to be that you basically knew your path to playing time (I.e., players on the roster at your position) when you committed and being “recruited over” at least meant by a younger player, that has all changed. Now transfers who are older and/or have more experience are being brought in. Some people feel leaving is soft; I think it is just pragmatic and possibly smart. Earn it on the court is one thing, but I’d see that BU has brought in 5 transfers in last two seasons — 4 of who have started and 1 who was basically 6th man. Brad’s not recruiting transfers for depth purposes for the most part; he’s recruiting transfers to start (as he should be). Kid like Amani has 3 years left, might as well look for a place where you can maximize your playing time that meets all your other needs too.

Adults leave jobs all the time because they were passed over for a promotion, someone hired in over them or because they can’t see a path to meet their goals. Do people think that person is soft because he or she didn’t stick it out, just work harder and hope everything works out?

I know a lot of us want to fill our roster and get the top guys right away! As players come off the board, some of us bemoan the loss of another possible target/ backup plan for our roster.

We all need to keep a few things in mind…
1. There are players who entered the draft who after getting feedback will return to college ( not necessarily to the team they played for last season).
2. As teams add players from the portal, players from said team will decide to transfer.
3. As coaching changes continue to take place, players will leave their schools and enter the transfer portal.
4. Graduate Transfers do not have to enter the transfer portal…they can just transfer.
5. Chances may be very slim, but Hawkins and Domask could still be back.

Although a lot of us hope to get off this roller coaster soon, buckle up because it can always be a longer ride than we planned!

Yeah, if only guys could improve after their freshmen years.

Where does Morez fit in with Booth and getting another 5? Would he/could he play both the 4 and 5? Dude is a McDAA level player (he got robbed IMO) and really want to see him get minutes so he can adjust to the speed of the game and develop chemistry with our guys, and also so he doesn't get frustrated and decide to portal at the end of Year 1. Really think he could be an all-time great for us if he sticks around.
Rez sure looked like he belonged in the McD game.

Which is it?

I’ll trust the staff at identifying athleticism and pedigree for their offense. A lot of what I’ve read from people who watched his film say he has high upside and NBA potential. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yes, this is my mindset on the matter. For all that the program did for him this season in terms of refining his shooting and transforming his body, there should be some level of accountability in staying around unless the staff and player agree on a mutual separation. He essentially wasted Fletch's time this entire season. I know it is Fletch's job and he will help any of the players to improve their bodies but where is the appreciation on the part of Sencire in this matter? We don't need to coddle a young man who is adult enough to make his own decisions. Let's call a spade a spade

This departure is actually more infuriating than any that I can remember in recent past...maybe since Mark Smith. Epps and Skyy made dumb decisions but their decisions were bore out of a desire for larger roles. Same with Podz. Same with Melendez. The Adam Miller one was a little bit of a headscratcher. But again, none of these players redshirted, wasted a season of our athletic training staff's time, to then high tail it out of Champaign over a departure of an assistant coach. Good grief

I'm not going to root against the kid. But, that dude doesn't have much loyalty to the Illinois basketball program and what they did for him during his redshirt. Programs don't redshirt players for them to make an exit after the season

I am convinced he reads this board. Every time we have gotten a commitment this off-season all he posts is “boom” lol

Yeah, I'd say saying a player had his foot out the door the entire year has a very negative connotation to it, tantamount to character assassination. He very well might be a bench player at many P5 schools, but he's not deserving of a label that he had a foot out of the door if there's not really any truth to it. As for the 30mpg or I leave ultimatum you are suggesting, seems unreasonable that happened or that he asked for it as again, we would have heard about it. So I'll say again, I don't see a need to drag Sencire through the mud unless there's a real factual reason to do so.
Werner and Piper essentially said on their podcast today that when he made the decision to redshirt the staff thought he would be leaving. It says something about him to stay, work the whole year, and give effort on the practice squad.
