The problem is guys like bquill, super, and the other guy (already forgot his moniker) weren't interested in offering wisdom. They are pure trolls trying to get a rise out of people. Many like this on the old Illini boards. Anyone remember Plaza 7, Lucky Baldwin and a dozen other names that guy signed on as every time he got banned?
Truth , another name he used.............

He does not resemble a 4, seems to lack the lateral quickness to guard college forwards. His physical assets are a 7-1 wingspan, strength, and hands. We didn't get to see the elite shooting, handling, and passing skills he showed in high school. He projected as a 5 that could pass face up or post up. However, he looked slow here, maybe the back problems.

What do he, Sencire, and and Jace Butler have in common?

They're all looking for a place to play ...

But unlike those two, no one has been brought in to replace Amani’s position as a center.

He was a freshman. Of course he's going to look slow against college forwards.

Don't get me wrong. He's a solid player. But at this point, is he a fit for Illinois? We've got Bos running point for two years now.

I hope you’re right but in this college hoops climate isn’t that: “kinda like optimistic?”

Finished watching a decent amount of Booth footage and my main takeaway is that he is a high ceiling explosive player who is going to need some decent development to unlock that potential. These are my thoughts:

Pros:
-Extremely explosive and athletic. Seems to thrive taking it off the dribble and driving to the hole.
-Very good defense for a freshman. Disciplined rim protector that plays bigger than he is, doesn't bite on fakes and goes straight up
-Finishing under contact as a freshman is a plus
-If shot develops could become an all conference player

Cons:
-Has a slow and inconsistent shooting motion that has a small hitch in it. Will need significant work to become a more consistent shooter.
-Falls in love with the three when he really doesn't need to and sometimes makes you shake your head when he settles for those and refuses to drive
-Midrange jumper is not pretty- no consistent form

Overall, I think he has a lot of promise and could become an NBA caliber player, but to get there, I think he's almost going to need to rebuild his shot as just watching his form, it makes sense why he has struggled with consistency and why his shooting percentage is as low as it is. And as he's inevitably going to be compared to Amani, I think he does have a higher ceiling, he's more explosive and a better defender at this stage of development, though a worse shooter and will settle more for inefficient shots. Will be intriguing to see how he progresses.

I offered my take. It could be wrong, but I think it's right. That's why it is my take.

People look at 6-7 / 6-8 and think he is not a 5.

Based on high school video, he looked to me like an undersized college 5 who would rely on strength and length to hold his own defensively. Nothing I saw at UI said anything else.

Astute observer's can and will disagree.

Is there a dearth of guards who can shoot 40+% That doesn't seem like as big of an ask as the supply is showing.

You really want someone who is only 1 MAYBE 2 inches taller than TSJ or Marcus playing the 5? Hard pass.

I gather the same reason Sencire left and Jase Butler decommitted.
None of them want to play the 5 at Illinois.

Wes Unseld played 14 years in the NBA at a time when there were a lot of low post 7 footers..

IMO, a strong 6-7/8 player with a 7 foot wing span, ball skills, and good pick and pop / pick and roll skills can play the 5 these days.

I'd rather have a highly skilled, super athletic 7 footer with a 7-7 wingspan. Where can I get one?

Jeremy Roach. G, from Duke just entered the portal. I believe he averaged 14 points a game this past season and has been a solid player
