I’m sad about this…I say with a grin. I know it’s happening everywhere and they will more than likely be fine, but it still makes me smile.

Too bad , so sad , I'm glad.......................I read a couple of those way too early mock top 25's that had puke at # 1 for next year .....wonder what they are saying now ...................lol..............I know they have the # 1 recruiting class coming in , but any bad news about puke just makes my day.........It really really does....................

Is he turning them away or are they saying no. This has been a very underwhelming transfer class. Who is the go to right now when you need a bucket. For all the final 4 teams they had that. Illinois not on the roster yet....I guess you could say White or Boswell....that doesn't give me the warm fuzzies

I like Pringle, but he was suspended twice during the season for conduct detrimental to the team and his FT% is only 56%. I'd prefer Sam Walters.
Pringle isn't the sexiest pick but he's long, athletic, and bouncy. You could do worse if you're looking for a guy that can defend out to the perimeter, provide some rim protection, and dunk while splitting time with Morez.

I think he would pair pretty well next to Hawkins if he came back and having Hawkins, Booth, Morez, and Pringle would be a nasty frontcourt.

Walters doesn't provide the defense or rim protection that Pringle does.

Personally I'd prefer Amari Williams of the guys in the portal so far but I'd imagine Pringle is cheaper and could allow you to splurge at the combo guard and wing.

Joel Goodson

respect my decision™
Pretty perfect for our needs assuming a reasonable price.

Does the dirty work, rebounds at both ends, all his shots are putbacks and dunks at the rim, and he'll keep Booth, Morez, Hawkins, whoever from getting overexposed at the 5.

Played at Dodge City (KS) C.C., where BU coached before he was born

Brad coached as a fetus? mind blowing. explains a lot

I'm baffled by everyone's assumption that Luke Goode will not be a starter next year. If healthy, given his 3 point shooting prowess, great teammate chemistry with 4 years experience in the program knowing Brad's systems inside out along with his important role this year from near the end of the Big Ten season on, I will go on record as saying that I will bet my beach house that he is in the starting line-up for the first game no matter who is added to the roster. But given that OA will soon join the staff, I will hedge my bet a bit as to WHICH beach house is the subject of this bet:
North Carolina Beach House Swept Away in Severe Coastal Flooding
https://giphy.com/clips/storyful-northern-america-beach-house-weather-and-science-5eUavFFXo2TE3XoXJc
That’s a fools bet!! For one he can’t get his own shot, two he is not a good ball handler and three he can’t guard no one even if they were in a phone booth

TSJ was a top 15 transfer in the portal. He was a blue chip transfer. Marcus, was definitely a diamond in the rough but that very hard to bank on getting one of those every year.

So, yes, this could happen and Brad definitely seems to get the best out of his players. It would just feel better to me to get that blue chipper that is an instant starter, 18 PPG type kid.

I still have trauma from the slogan that "Bruce will coach 'em up" haha
If Brad levels up another transfer to the extent TSJ and Domask leveled up, he is going to start getting a reputation.

Junior year TSJ was quite a long way from being 1st team All-Big Ten.

We're also seemingly targeting younger players. It is not unreasonable to expect more development in 18 and 19 year olds than it is 21 and 22 year olds.

We have 1 in the fold already that is as proven as they are. Let's wait and see what happens. Roster isn't done yet!
TSJ as a freshman had TS of 57% on 22% usage and 24 minutes per game, with ORtg/DRtg of 112/93 and WS/40 of 0.178. His 3pt% was low, but he got to the line at a ridiculous rate to bring his TS up. He fouled a lot and didn't have many assists, but he contributed with rebounds, steals, and blocks. Even with obvious things to improve on, he was already very very good at helping his team win. @NarrowJ , I'm curious who you think is as proven as that.

@FreshlySqueezed, I agree there are freshman with worse stats than freshman-TSJ who legitimately have a higher ceiling than he did at the time. It's fine to bring in mostly young, raw, high-ceiling guys if we're on a 2-3 year "reload" plan (and I'm not necessarily opposed to that), but I think the party line is that we're looking to win big every year, so I think we're still hoping the last few transfers are more proven.

Decision soon on whether or not to take Ben Humrichous from Evansville. There's some debate about it.

A lot of speculation on who Orlando Antigua will bring with him if he comes. Blown a bit out of proportion, IMO. It would open a couple of doors, though.

Brad Underwood and Illinois are all-in on a new era

When Illinois alum Chester Frazier joined the Illinois coaching staff in 2021, the move was an oasis for a fanbase thirstier than an OnlyFans convention.

...
And that brings us to today’s topic.

Chester Frazier is not a bad basketball coach.

Chester Frazier is not disloyal.

Chester Frazier left the Illinois basketball program better than he found it.

But Chester Frazier’s strengths lie in contradiction with CEO Underwood’s vision for the roster.

Prep recruiting is a secondary endeavor.

Of course it still matters. Having a pipeline of talented freshmen is still a central tenet of roster construction. That hasn’t changed despite what hand-wringers and yap-runners on social media platforms say. But it has become even with or even secondary to transfer portal recruiting.

The one-and-done straight line to championship basketball is a relic. In the Sweet 16 this year, there were four freshman starters.

Anyway, the point is that power conference role players and mid-major producers often make their biggest collegiate impact at their second (or third) school. They’re like young free agent second-round picks getting their first long-term deals after outperforming expectations at their first stop.

There was much more involved in Frazier's departure than just recruiting stuff.

I’d love Humrichous. So much Riley Minix to his game

JMO Coleman is 1% chance. He really cannot prove much more on college stage. NBA drafts on potential and he has shown his shooting, passing, ball handling and athleticism. The knee is what it is.

The days of the recruiting ace asst coach are over, whether H.S. or portal. NIL trumps that. Being well-connected is still important, but even more-so the ability to scout the Domasks and other young transfers and extrapolate their potential and fit on your yearly brand new team. Also important is a sort of 'Iron chef' talent of 'here's 6 new ingredients, you have one month to create a tasty dish' that beats the competition... in essence, a creative and imaginative basketball mind. Was Chester that? It sounds like he maybe was on the defensive end.

Starting to feel like this new transfer portal/NIL world benefits a coach like Brad more than the old way. These kids who are 2-3 yrs more mature than the incoming freshman are probably more accepting of his hard driving style than the stud 18yo coming in who have usually had everything handed to them up until that point. Less emotional BS with a 20yo than an 18yo.

End of an era. And as a fan, this part makes me sad --not the players getting paid. I look back, and pretty much every player I've enjoyed watching in an Illini uniform was a multi-year guy that had a strong connection to the program and developed in it.

I realize there's no fix for it. Roster turnover will be much higher in this era, with two years seeming like a career, three a lifetime, and four an eternity. Tell me again what the name of this site is?

I still think having the high level recruiters on your staff are a huge part of the portal. Past recruiting relationships will pay off the 2nd time around. If OA does come we will have 2 assistants with a history of developing great relationships with players and aau/high school coaches and programs. At that point I do think this sets it up for Underwood better on the 2nd time around for these portal players. It feels like we are in a really good spot right now. Great time to be an Illini!
