Joel Goodson

respect my decision™
Well hopefully that’s because we’re aiming higher. Presumably we’ll use that Storr money for something here at some point…

this. Jones has to be at the top of our board. Cardet was a good Plan B. pretty similar skill sets

hopefully, Orlando and Tim have a stuff ton of pull (accompanied by a big bag)

I think it’s a bad idea to push all of the guys you’ve been selling on being EDG s out the door in favor of the newest shiny toys. I understand how competition works, but why did Cal leave Kentucky? He got the most talented (admittedly younger) guys , threw them together and watched them come up short in postseason. I think continuity matters. Guys like Goode and Ty provide that.
Bottom line is Illini finished #6 in the country and they were solid role players and could be again. However, with success and wins we are getting more versatile, athletic, skilled players. NIL is coming in and we need to take advantage and replace guys with better players and 3 or more alphas like TSJ, Ayo, Kofi, Domask, or even Coleman. We need more versatility from guys on top of being EDGs. This talk that he is from Chicago St. means diddly when Bo Buie and others could stop him and after seeing guys like Lindsey "big game" Hunter put up 38 in a half vs our own future NBA guys. Its so obvious that this kid is a baller.

Us and Providence in thick here...

Cardet might be in my top 3 favorite players in the portal. Personally want him very badly....
I want this dude in orange and blue bad. If you throw him in an illini jersey vs NW he played looked a lot like Ayo that game but with a sick dunk. He also played well vs other power teams without much help.

So apparently there was some rumors on Twitter yesterday about Goode entering the portal and going to IU. Trilly Donovan dropped a message in the IU discord this morning saying there is a ton of smoke around that and he will be looking into that today. Do our insiders got any info on that?
This is what I don't like about the way Underwood is recruiting, and I'm guessing Chester wasn't a fan either. He isn't filling holes. He's just bringing in players.

So it sounds like we will get Antigua. We know Antigua is very strong with Caribbean players and New York players (strange how so many guys from the Caribbean end up playing basketball in NYC), so let's say we land Koby Brea. What's the difference between Goode and Brea? They're redundant players, and bringing in Brea is what is likely to push Goode out.

Assuming that is what happens, I'm not sure I want that. We know what Goode can do. Through his Jr year, Brea shot 39.4% from 3 compared to Goode's 38.8%, only Goode was doing it in the Big Ten and Brea was doing it in a mid-major conference. Brea obviously exploded this past year, but will he be able to do that in the Big Ten? Let's just pretend that Goode goes to Indiana, we get Brea and they both shoot 42% from 3 next year. Is this a trade anyone wants to make?

This is where I say you better win. If you are going to run off every player I've grown to like, because you think someone else is better, you better win and win big.

There are not many data points in this transfer portal world to know for sure the best approach. Last year we brought in a bunch of guys and it didn't work, team chemistry was poor. This past year, we brought in a lot of guys and it did work. My fear though is that having a guy scoring 23 ppg covered a lot of flaws. I don't think we're going to get that again next year. So, year 3, again we're going to bring in a lot of players, and insane amount if you ask me. What will our results be? Guess we'll find out.

Ten days till the portal closes, seems like it should be a busy week. If we don’t see anything soon I’d imagine we will see a moving of the goal posts on expectations.

Cardet is not a loss, check his stats against actual comp
Scored 30 against Northwestern this past year to go with 4 boards and 4 assists and shot 62% from the field. 10, 6, and 2 against Wisconsin, 19, 4, 1 against Kansas State, bad game against Ok State getting 5, 2, 3. Last year he scored 16 against Gonzaga, 11 against Northwestern, 18 against Marquette, 17 against Minnesota, and 31 against Stanford. As a Fr he he didn't have any good games against big teams.

I wasn't really thrilled about Cardet, but it was not because he couldn't stack up against actual competition. I just think he's a volume scorer and you can't expect someone to go from a low major schedule to a high major and bring the same stats.

How does our success from last year's team have any bearing on our appeal? That team is gone. And from what insiders are saying even more of them are leaving. Having one successful year with those guys means nothing now if we have no holdovers from that team. If we are going to build a team of entirely new players like this then it comes down to money. If we get outbid we get outbid. We are seemingly trying to build a team of transfers like Kentucky used to build a team of top freshmen. The problem is that Kentucky had the standard that they got guys to the NBA so they could recruit on that (along with the money). We don't have that extra feature to offer them. We don't get players to the NBA and we have had one year of tournament success. So what is the draw? Money I guess. We may be successful doing that, we seem to be 1-1 lately with that approach so we don't know yet. But I firmly believe we can put the phrase Every Day Guys to bed for a little bit. If Rodgers or Goode leave because we don't value them then we don't value that term and can stop pretending like we do. And I'm not even saying that we can't bring in better players. We may be able to...but can we play this game every year? Disregard the players we already have. All it is is Creaning players without having to be the ones actually having to get your hands dirty. Just bring in the guys needed to push old players out. Its an awful system that might work in the short term, but long term you have widely varying results and diminishing fan loyalty. Yay
One of the most shocking parts of the new portal era for me is that hilariously Tom Crean might now be considered "ahead of his time" and a "basketball innovator" instead of a villain. He was simply portalling before a portal existed. Who saw that coming? Now excuse me while I projectile vomit in Bloomington's direction

There are many NYC residents that have migrated from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Jamica. so, it isn't surprising that there are many Carribean basketball players. Many private high schools in the NYC area use contacts in the Carribean to bring in young men to play basketball.
