Just an observation......

UConn only had 3 transfers in it's top 9
Purdue had 1

I believe this is the most effective way to thrive in the Portal Potty Era. Recruit, Develop, and KEEP the RIGHT players to add stability to your system, and fill in the blanks with the right transfers. I like to win BIG all season long, not just after the new year as we wait for a brand new roster to rebuild chemistry 100%.

So what we are doing is not the "new norm" for all CBK, however it is for us at this time. Hopefully we ease into the above method as it is more sustainable and provides more consistent results.

I don't think the "sport cannot go on like this" thing is that clear. I really couldn't care less about players having the right to move when they want and make $. I'm probably in the minority but I don't think it's a huge minority and I would bet that there's a majority of the majority that will eventually accept this new reality and deal with it.

It's not a whole lot different than building a roster of 5* talent that go to the draft after 1-2 yrs. Either way you're still not going to have guys around for 4 yrs. I don't care which way UI does things I just want the most talent and I want a natty.
I suppose it is a matter of degree, as for most things. So while moving from one team to another at the end each year might be fine with many fans but not all, would transferring at the semester (or quarter) break be palatable? Perhaps transferring after giving 30 days notice would seem reasonable to some.

I doubt transferring from, say, the home locker room to the visitors' locker room at halftime when your coach hasn't put you in for even one minute in the first half would not be tolerable to very many fans though. :)

EVERY offseason since the NIL rule changes and since the transfer changes have occurred I’ve seen people on here say the same thing over and over and over again talking about “iDk iF i CaN cHeEr FoR tHiS tEaM.” Then months later the same people are in the game threads and post game threads doing what they said they wouldn’t, and are just as happy as the rest of us as we make the tourney and are finding more success it. This is how college basketball is now, deal with it, it’s not changing.
As long as the team is good, yeah. If the team becomes mid or bad, then I expect more people will dip out.

Illini are not alone in losing players. (I realize no one has said they are.)
From ESPN

Duke loses seventh player to the portal

Sean Stewart, a former top-20 recruit, announced he's entering the transfer portal Friday. Stewart came out of high school with a reputation as an elite rebounder but failed to carve out a consistent role in Durham. He averaged 2.6 points and 3.2 rebounds in 33 games off the bench.

Outlook: Stewart follows Jeremy Roach, Mark Mitchell, TJ Power, Jaylen Blakes, Christian Reeves and Jaden Schutt, while Kyle Filipowski and Jared McCain left for the NBA and Ryan Young is out of eligibility. Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster are the lone returnees for Jon Scheyer who is, however, bringing in a six-man recruiting class ranked No. 1 in the country.
'
Then again, who cares about Dookie anyway?

Can you really be an Illini for life if you transfer to Indiana? My answer is no, no you can't. Anywhere but IU Goode...

I think you can throw out any previous years model of how to win- this year is the first in the era of full on free agency with NIL being openly managed by teams now. UConn will have complete roster turnover this year as will many others

I don’t disagree that if you can form a really good team and keep the core together for multiple years and keep them happy with NIL we should do that- it’s just not going to be realistic going forward

I'm sure the other 99% of college coaches would rather start building their teams around Edey or Clingan too.

With so many exiting the program and the uncertainty of who will be filling the roles, my greatest concern is not lack of talent but entering into another 22-23 season where the talent is there but the unity/culture/personalities result in a decline.
I see this being a bigger issue at schools with lesser NIL funds. Your culture is shaped positively when employees feel that they are being paid a fair amount. Plus, I'm not sure about anyone else but this seemed like one of the most likable Illini teams that I've seen and most of the guys that made it like that were only here for a year so maybe we'll be okay.

Based on what Insiders have said, I do not see Goode being pushed out (either indirectly or directly). The fact that they claim Brad wanted him to stay was an indication that there was a role for Goode to play here. The fact that is not the role he wanted, does not mean he was pushed out. Being pushed out would mean that there was no role to be had on the team, so Goode had no choice but leave. Goode is completely within his rights to find a new place to play next year, but it is clear there was a role here (just not the one he wanted). I am personally tired of all of these takes that the staff is "pushing" out the homegrown talent.
So what you’re saying is that the circumstances around his current situation indirectly led to him being pushed out? Got it.

Direct places blame, indirect places ownership.

Creaned is a direct blame placed on the staff. Right or wrong, it is still the “blame” of the staff.

Asking a guy to stay and telling him you want him to help with leading, find your role etc, while also recruiting over him, places ownership
On said player for what is best for him.

How does this compare to other coaches that followed a similar trajectory to Underwood's? Genuinely curious.

1. He coached 3 seasons at Stephen F. Austin, so these are mathematically eliminated.
2. He coached 1 season at Oklahoma State, so that is automatically eliminated.
3. He has coached 7 seasons here at Illinois, but only 2 of those were before COVID, and he inherited some young guys like Frazier and Williams who would stick around for an entire four years ... they just committed to Groce. You have Ayo and Kofi leaving early to go pro, which is objectively good for the program, and then you have the transfer madness.

I do not have time today to analyze this further, but I think that claim is actually ridiculously unhelpful, haha.

I just did the obvious Top 2. But maybe today I'll break down more of the Top 15 to show that what we are doing is NOT the new norm in CBK. ;)
