Some posters are asking... just what does 'Team' mean any more with new guys coming in every year? And how can I root for this?

Well, I’ll tell you. Illini Basketball is Illini Nation – we, the loyal fans. We are 'The Team'. And we are here from year to year and generation to generation.

Players represent us – the great roundball fans of the Prairie State. We fans are the heart and soul of this 'Team' and program... not the players or even the coaches that all will have moved on one day either quickly or later.

The players on the floor are of course the face of the program. But the heart and soul and ‘Team’ that never changes is the Spirit of Illini Basketball that is played in the center of a great roundball State in located in the center of the Nation.

We are Team. The players are just along for the ride from one stop to the next for as long as they choose and it works well for them.

God Bless the Portal. Freedom for Players and yearly hope’s raised for Fans.

Three questions.
1. Was Luke Goode likely to start next season?
2. Would Luke likely be a starter at IU or play almost an identical role on that team? I see quick guards continuing to exploit his defensive liability much like Buie...but he was also one heck of a rebounder.
3. Does anyone besides me think that if the Illini were to hit a home run in acquiring a 6'10+ center that can shoot, pass, board, and defend, that Hawkins runs it back for another year in the Assembly Hall?

Just thoughts that need answers.

UConn lost 5 of their top 9 players from the 2022-23 national championship team that played regularly. Hawkins, Jackson, Sanongo, Alleyne and Calcaterra. They returned 42.6 % of minutes and 36.6 % of scoring. Only one guy (Alleyne) transferred, 3 other signed NBA deals, and the other (Calcaterra) was a grad transfer out of eligibility.

Hurley didn't recruit over and elevated Newton's role, didn't recruit over and elevated Karaban's role, didn't recruit over and elevated Clingan's role in a huge way, recruited a grad transfer in Spencer, recruited a big time freshman recruit in Castle, didn't recruit over and elevated Diarra's role, didn't recruit over and elevated Johnson's role, brought in a couple of other well regarded recruits in Ball and Stewart to fill out the rotation.

In summary, 2 returning starters that became bigger focal points. An elevated backup that became a star. A grad transfer that fit like a glove. A star one and done freshman. Two deep bench guys that stuck around to be rotation players. A couple of other freshmen to be lower rotation guys. Trust amongst players and coaches with each other that they will get their opportunity, players that don't get jittery and leave if it doesn't happen quickly, coaches that look from within without looking for a brand new team because talented players leave. Strong freshman recruiting, one transfer to fill it all out.

There's basically no comparison to how the process has unfolded at Illinois. Would anyone be shocked if Diarra stays his last year at UConn and becomes a starter? If Johnson slides into Clingan's starter position assuming Clingan stays in the Draft? Ball and Stewart to stick around and have bigger roles next year? Whatever anyone thinks of Hurley, he definitely knows what he's doing and has gotten great buy-in.

yes. we are in a really good spot right now
Humrichous could be a nice piece, but I’d like to register my objection to the inevitable comparisons with Domask immediately.

Humrichous was less productive as a junior at an NAIA school than Domask was as a true freshman at SIU.

He’s a considerably better 3-point shooter than Domask and bigger, he would be a nice stand in the corner and attack undisciplined closeouts type weapon, but you don’t run offense through him.

And then at the defensive end of the floor you’re basically just hiding him, forget about switches.

The most striking thing at this point is just the lack of players.

We have 9 players right now, and two of them are Jason Jakstys and Nico Moretti.

Tre White’s empty inefficient chucking on Louisville last season is the only double digit average scoring effort in college basketball currently on our roster.
Only really going to play 8 guys. Ideally 9 and 10 are solid depth options to account for injuries or foul trouble but probably not going to count on those guys very often.

Current roster is mostly full of role player types imo(3rd and 4th option types when they're on the floor). Need to go get a top a two but I'm not worried yet.

Coleman wants to showcase his abilities and playing the 5 at Illinois doesn't do that for him. 2 weeks to get some thing called Humus and then another guy.

Maybe I’m just experiencing Deja vu or maybe he did it again but he tweeted this last year didn’t he? I seem to remember conversations on this thread about whether or not it was autocorrect capitalizing “New Jerseys” for him.
I'm glad someone else remembers that, I thought this was Coleman's exact tweet when Mulcahy entered the portal last year ?

If Schutt had done as well at Duke as Goode did here he would not be in the portal. Pass on Schutt.
We need more shooters/bodies. Right now we have Boswell 39%,38% from 3. Davis 39%. DGL, Moretti. JMO Schutt is worth a flyer. We have plenty of open slots. Schutt only played 1 year due to injury.

I asked about this when he made the announcement that he was going to take part in senior night back in, what?, March. I asked if this meant he would be transferring or wouldn't be back (maybe even just go out and get a job) and everyone firmly responded with a "no", that he could always take part in another senior night or graduating night (another degree or something) and that it definitely did not mean he was necessarily transferring. So, well, not sure what point I am making.

I know we should trust the staff but we're still missing multiple starters and its getting stressful...
We're missing 4 legitimate starting pieces, unless we count Ty as one. Then, we're missing 3. We have Boswell, then a lot of quality bench depth. If who we've brought in(to date) are expected the start.... it'll be interesting. It might not be successful, but it'll be interesting.
