Not sure if I saw this but NIL $$$$ is getting up there

So is it just like this now?:
1. Money
2. Money
3. Money
4. Money
5. Money
6. Fit with school
7. Fit with coaches
8. Fit with players
9. Close to home
10. Coolness factor

I think donors are gonna find out the hard way over the next couple of years that the "biggest" deal will not always be the "best" deal for many of these players.

Or maybe I'm just a fuddy-duddy and it is truly all about the Bosmans-Verdonks.

P.S. The term "bag" is already played out IMO.

I 100% misread that the first go around.
But then Steve Lanter blew out his knee, and that was pretty much the end of the story...My husband went to MSU, so I always remind him that we beat Magic's team the year they won it all against Larry Bird's Indiana State team. Sadly, he always responds with something like "Remind me again, how many National Championship have the Illini won, I can't remember."

I did not get to be there but I remember watching the MSU game on T.V. Eddie Johnson blew up. We've had great wings. Shannon and Domask were amazing but Eddie and Mark were fabulous when they were on too. They complemented each other so much. A lot of youngsters are not familiar with them and that is a shame! I remember Holcombe. Didn't we get beat by KSU in the tourney or was that the year after? Don't remember. Good times!

Wrong class. Richard Scanlon was the most popular Prof on campus for a couple of decades. Classical and Greek Mythology. I had one or two of his classes. (Required for School of Accountancy as I recall. /s). He used to dress up and predict the outcome of our fall football games. Immensely entertaining and full of energy.

In fact, the most popular faculty member on campus while he was there!

You're spot on! Welcome to the ruin of college sports!

He’d dress up as the Greek God Apollo! Simpler times for sure.

Seems less plausible than Boogie Fland who is very close to OA but who knows.

It also seems like all else being equal a highly sought after transfer would look more favorably on BU’s current Illinois project than a highly sought after high schooler.
It would seem that OA coming here might bring a player with him that has some gravitas...

My man packed Foellinger Auditorium on the regular. Good times. Close contest between Scanlon and Fred Gottheil for the GOAT. (99% chance I misspelled either Foellinger or Gottheil).

Imagine what proven college legends like Magic Johson, Larry Bird and Michael Jordan would be worth in NIL back in 1979 and early 1980's. Seeing what figures are being thrown out to players that haven't yet proven themselves at this level makes you think that they are following the path of NBA doing similiar stuff.

A wise GM type coach is going to excel, those just throwing money are going to be average at best.

You're not the only one. It will be interesting to see how the next couple seasons play out as we're in uncharted territory. I don't blame the players for the roster turnover or what it's doing to the sport. I do echo what others have said about fan alienation or losing passion when there's no incentive for players or coaches to stick with guys for more than a season. If programs can't get more creative in finding longer commitments, there's no reason for players to show any commitment to their school, which is part of the charm of college sports, or at least it has been for me.

I think there were people that looked at a number of guys on the roster who seemed to be sticking with the program, and are asking why that wasn't the case. Was it delusion on our part, were they caught off guard, or was it something else?

From the Hoosier.com message board. Same post says “committed” and “intends to commit,” so do with this what you will.

Good luck to Luke! Will pull for him every time he is on the court, but hope he misses when he plays us unless we are comfortably ahead. I said previously that Illini fans are diffierent, because we are passionate but also support our former players. Luke has an Illinois degree, BIG tourney winner, and elite 8 member. He will always be an Illini, not an opinion but fact.

It was a great team. Derek Holcomb, Eddie Johnson, Mark Smith, Rob Judson, and Steve Lanter. Off the bench Neil Bresnahan and Levi Cobb. We were 16-0 after beating Magic/MSU Spartans on Thursday night and would have been #1 if we had not been upset by Ohio State on Saturday. Lou had brought Illini basketball back from the wilderness.

I was at that Ohio State game. My first Illini game ever. I was heartbroken. And yet, completely hooked.
